Description

A. J. BELL. Lavatory- No. 202,139. Patented April 9,1s7s.
' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
A. JOHN BELL, OFKOKOMO, INDIANA.
, IMPROVEMENT IN LAVATORI ES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 202,139, dated April 9, 1878; application filed February 28; 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, A. JOHN BELL, of Kokomo, Howard county, Indiana, have invented a new and useful Lavatory, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to an improved con struction of lavatory or wash-stand and its appurtenances, and, in its most complete form, comprises a stand or table proper, which contains the wash bowl or basin; an elevated tank or reservoir, which is so formed and located as to discharge the functions of a splashboard; a charging-funnel for said tank, which, being provided with a valve, a faucet, and a lamp, can be made available either to warm the contents of the reservoir or to heat up the contents of the said funnel only, from which hot water may be drawn bymeans of said faucet. There is also another cook or faucet, for replenishing the bowl from the tank direct. I also provide a slop-receptacle, which communicates with the extreme bottom of the bowl by a pipe that leads from the customary plug-closed orifice. The said receptacle has a lid, to afford access to its interior, and a faucet, to enable its contents to be drawn off when necessary.
My combined tank and splash-board affords a convenient object for attachment of shelves or brackets for soap and other articles of the toilet and of a rack for towels. The addition of a lid to the wash-bowl enables the complete closure of the same, and converts the stand into a convenient sideboard.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a lavatory embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same.
A represents the table or stand proper. This table may be of poplar or other cheap wood, and may have its top, front, and ends clothed with zinc or other metal B. It is pierced at middle to receive a suitable wash bowl or basin, 0, having the customary orifice or outlet 0, which outlet communicates, by
. means of a pipe, D, with a slop-receptacle, E.
The said table A may be upheld on four legs, F, which may also serve to support the slopreoeptacle E, which receptacle, being fastened to the legs by means of wood screws G, serves in turn to brace and stiffen the legs. A lid,
6, enables access to the receptacle E for the purpose of cleansing or otherwise, and a faucet, H, enables its discharge.
Resting upon and attached to the rear por-.
tion of said table A is my tank or reservoir I, the same being a rectangular vessel, of zinc or other suitable metal, and having a suitable chargingfunnel, J, and discharging faucet K, that enters the bowl 0.
A customary wasteway, '0, may. lead from the bowl 0 to the discharge -pipe D. The tank may be of any desired dimensions; but, in practice, I prefer to make it about as herein illustrated-that is to say, of length nearly equal to that of the stand, of height about one-half its length, and of width from one to three inches.
Attached to the front of the tank I, and
communicating by port or orifice z therewith, is my charging-funnel J, which has, near its lower end, a small faucet, M. The sides of this funnel are prolonged at j below the bottom, to confine the heat of asmall spirit-lamp, N, placed upon a shelf, 0, or upon the top of the stand if the shelf be omitted. The orifice 2', between the funnel and the tank, is capable of being closed by means of a slide-valve or gate, P, which, being provided with a handle, p, is capable of being readily raised or lowered by the user. The charging-funnel J has a tightly-closing lid, 1.
Secured to the front or top of the tank I may be convenient brackets or receptacles Q R, for toilet articles, mirrors, lamps, &c.
The upper surface of the table A, being made slightly dishing, causes any water spilled upon it to escape into the basin. The basin 0 may be closed, when not in use, by a lid, S, so as to convert the entire top into a convenient shelf or sideboard. A bar or band, T, bent around the front of the funnel and soldered to it and to the tank, serves the double.
the funnel, as shown in Fig. 2. If, on the contrary, it be desired to heat quickly, and even to the boiling-point, the contents of the. funnel, the communication between the funnel and the tank is closed. The slop-receptacle, on becoming full, may be discharged into a pail or bucket placed under its opened faucet.
The form here selected for illustration is susceptible of various modifications. For example, the table A may constitute the top of a closet, to the inner side of whose back the slop-receptacle may be attached.
I claim as new and of my invention- 1. In combination with the combined tank and splash-board I, the charging-funnel J, capable of being temporarily isolated from the tank I by means of gate or valve P.
2. In a lavatory, substantially as described, the funnel J, communicatingwith and capa- A. JOHN BELL.
