- The foregoing aspects and many of the attendant advantages of the claimed subject matter will become more readily appreciated by reference to the following detailed description, when taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, wherein:
-
FIG. 1 is an upper right perspective exploded view of a packaging system formed in accordance with a representative embodiment of the present disclosure. -
FIG. 2 is a perspective view of an insert of the packaging system ofFIG. 1 . -
FIG. 3 is a front elevation section view of the insert ofFIG. 2 . -
FIG. 4 is a front elevation exploded section view of an aspect of the packaging system ofFIG. 1 . -
FIG. 5 is a front elevation section view of another aspect of the packaging system ofFIG. 1 . - The present disclosure provides packaging systems having two or more components that comprise a collet configured to securely hold elements that are highly deformable, for example soft, flexible, and/or porous elements such as cosmetic applicators and porous components created by additive manufacturing.
-
FIG. 1 shows apackaging system 100. In the representative embodiment ofFIG. 1 , thepackaging system 100 is a skin refresher, such as may be configured to store and apply a cosmetic formulation to a skin portion of a user. While the inventive packaging systems are discussed in the context of a skin refresher, they are not limited to skin refreshers, but include other packaging systems, for example makeup compacts, containers with sponges, and the like. -
Packaging system 100 includes acontainer 102, aninsert 104, aworkpiece 106, and anoptional cap 108, which assemble together in an axial assembly alongaxis 110. As described below, thecontainer 102 and theinsert 104 cooperate to function as a collet that securely holds theworkpiece 106. In some embodiments, thecontainer 102,insert 104, andworkpiece 106 assemble together as a permanent assembly. In some embodiments, thecontainer 102,insert 104, andworkpiece 106 are configured to be at least partially disassembled, e.g., to facilitate recycling or part replacement. Thecap 108 is configured to selectively disassemble from the rest of the assembly. -
Container 102 contains a reservoir configured to contain a liquid or solid formulation, e.g., a cosmetic formulation. For example, container 102 is configured to contain a formulation that is drawn up by theworkpiece 106, e.g., by absorption. In some embodiments, the reservoir is formed integrally with thecontainer 102, however in some embodiments, the reservoir is a separate component that fits within thecontainer 102. As described in greater detail below, container 102 includes amouth 112 having a shape and size that are configured to receiveinsert 104 andworkpiece 106. In the representative embodiment ofFIG. 1 , themouth 112 is circular. In some embodiments, the mouth is a non-circular shape, e.g., oval or square.Container 102 may be formed from a thermoplastic polymer, for example polypropylene, polyethylene, and the like. As described in greater detail below, themouth 112 and theinsert 104 comprise a collet that securely holds theworkpiece 106 within theinsert 104. InFIG. 1 , thecontainer 102 and thecap 108 form a rectangular shape, however this is representative. In some embodiments, thecontainer 102 and thecap 108 form different shapes, e.g., a sphere shape, an egg shape, a cylinder, and the like. -
Insert 104 is configured to secure thecontainer 102 to theworkpiece 106, as described in greater detail below. As described in more detail below, insert 104 is configured to receiveworkpiece 106 and to retain it withmouth 112 of thecontainer 102 is an axially aligned configuration alongaxis 110. In some embodiments, insert 104 is formed from a foam, a natural or synthetic textile, and the like. -
Workpiece 106 is configured to draw up and/or hold formulation from thecontainer 102, and also to release the formulation onto a skin portion of a user. InFIG. 1 , to facilitate contact betweenworkpiece 106 and the formulation stored incontainer 102,workpiece 106 is configured to extend into the formulation-containing reservoir ofcontainer 102. InFIG. 1 ,workpiece 106 is a highly deformable porous applicator substantially formed from a foam material. In some embodiments, workpiece 106 is a porous component created by additive manufacturing (e.g., 3D printing). In some embodiments, workpiece 106 is at least partially formed from a textile or other soft material. -
Cap 108 is configured to couple withcontainer 102 via a container engagement member (threads, in this embodiment) such that it covers and protectsworkpiece 106. InFIG. 1 ,cap 108 has internal threads that reversibly couple with external threads ofcontainer 102 such thatcap 108 securely coversworkpiece 106. In some embodiments, the container and cap couple with different coupling means, e.g., one or more snaps, latches, single-use adhesive, and the like. In some embodiments, packaging system 100 does not include a cap. - In one representative method of use, a user decouples
cap 108 from thecontainer 102 in order to exposeworkpiece 106. Because theworkpiece 106 is nested within themouth 112 of thecontainer 102 and extends into the formulation-containing reservoir therein, theworkpiece 106 holds a quantity of the formulation. Holding thecontainer 102, the user applies the formulation to a skin portion by pressing, brushing, rubbing, or otherwise touchingworkpiece 106 to the skin portion. In another representative method of use, the user removesworkpiece 106 from theinsert 104 and applies the formulation to a skin portion by pressing, brushing, rubbing, or otherwise touchingworkpiece 106 to the skin portion. - The features of the
packaging system 100 will now be described in detail. -
FIG. 2 andFIG. 3 show a perspective view and a front elevation view ofinsert 104, respectively. As can be seen, insert 104 has anannular wall 114 with a radiallyinner surface 116 and a radiallyouter surface 118. Theannular wall 114 extends from afirst end 120 to asecond end 122 in a direction generally aligned withaxis 110, thefirst end 120 being configured for insertion into themouth 112 of thecontainer 102 before thesecond end 122. - As most clearly shown in
FIG. 3 , theouter surface 118 ofannular wall 114 tapers from a first outer diameter D1 to a second outer diameter D2 which is greater than the first outer diameter D1. InFIG. 3 , the first outer diameter D1 is measured proximal to a bottomingshoulder 126, and the second outer diameter D2 is measured proximal to thesecond end 122. In some embodiments, a difference between the second outer diameter D2 and the first outer diameter D1 is about 0.005 inches to about 0.015 inches, e.g., about 0.010 inches. As described below in greater detail with respect toFIG. 4 , the tapered outer surface ofinsert 104 enables thecontainer 102 and theinsert 104 to work together as a collet that securely engages theinsert 104 with themouth 112 of thecontainer 102, and securely engages the 106 within theinsert 104. Theinner surface 116 has an inner diameter D3 that is sized to receive theworkpiece 106. In some embodiments, the inner diameter D3 is cylindrical and constant, e.g., is about the same as an outer diameter of theworkpiece 106. In some embodiments, theinner surface 116 is conical and slightly tapered such that the inner diameter D3 tapers from a diameter that is slightly less than the outer diameter of theworkpiece 106 to a diameter that is slightly greater than the outer diameter of theworkpiece 106. - To further secure the
insert 104 within thecontainer 102, theinsert 104 includes at least one optionalinsert engagement member 124 formed on theouter surface 118 of theannular wall 114. Theinsert engagement member 124 has a complementary shape to a corresponding insert engagement member formed on the inner surface of themouth 112 of thecontainer 102, as described below. InFIG. 2 andFIG. 3 , theinsert engagement member 124 is a ridge that extends around the circumference of theouter surface 118, the ridge being sized and located to engage a complementary recess formed on an inner surface of the mouth of the container. In some embodiments, the insert engagement member does not extend completely around the circumference of the outer surface. In some embodiments, the insert engagement member is a thread configured to engage complementary threads formed on the inner surface of the mouth of the container. - Proximal to the
first end 120, a bottomingshoulder 126 extends radially inward fromaxis 110 in order to preventworkpiece 106 from falling into thecontainer 102 when assembled. The bottomingshoulder 126 has an annular shape with an inner diameter that is smaller than the inner diameter D3 of theinner surface 116. In some embodiments, the bottomingshoulder 126 has a different inner diameter than inFIG. 2 andFIG. 3 . - Proximal to the
second end 122, aflange 128 extends radially outward fromaxis 110. Theflange 128 is configured to rest atop themouth 112 of the container 102 (e.g., to contact a lip of the mouth 112) when theinsert 104 is fully engaged in themouth 112. In addition, thecap 108 has an interior shoulder that is configured to push against theflange 128, in order to ensure correct coupling between thecontainer 102 and theinsert 104. Further still, theflange 128 provides a sealing surface, which a gasket of thecap 108 can seal against in order to prevent leakage or loss of the formulation stored in thecontainer 102. This is described in detail with respect toFIG. 5 . In some embodiments, theflange 128 has a different diameter than shown inFIG. 2 andFIG. 3 . -
Insert 104 further includes aworkpiece engagement member 130 that projects radially inward from theannular wall 114, such that theworkpiece engagement member 130 engagesworkpiece 106 when it is inserted intoinsert 104. InFIG. 2 andFIG. 3 ,workpiece engagement member 130 is a flexible tab formed integrally with theannular wall 114. As shown inFIG. 2 ,workpiece engagement member 130 has a raisedridge 132 formed on a radially outer surface thereof. Wheninsert 104 is inserted into themouth 112 ofcontainer 102, the inner surface of themouth 112 pushes againstridge 132, causingworkpiece engagement member 130 to be pushed radially inward, such that atooth 134 “bites” into theworkpiece 106, thereby preventing removal ofworkpiece 106 fromcontainer 102. Therepresentative insert 104 includes a plurality of workpiece engagement members such asworkpiece engagement member 130. In some embodiments, theinsert 104 does not include any workpiece engagement members. In some embodiments, theinsert 104 includes fewer or more numerous workpiece engagement members than shown inFIG. 2 andFIG. 3 . In some embodiments, theworkpiece engagement member 130 includes a ramp, a spike, or the like (in addition to or instead of a tooth) that is configured to extend into (i.e., “bite”) theworkpiece 106 when thecontainer 102, insert 104, andworkpiece 106 are axially assembled. -
FIG. 4 shows an exploded view alongaxis 110, to illustrate additional features ofpackaging system 100. -
Workpiece 106 has afirst portion 138 and asecond portion 140. Thefirst portion 138 has an outer diameter D4 that is about the same as the inner diameter D3 of insert 104 (e.g., +1-0.01 inches). In some embodiments in which the inner diameter D3 of theinsert 104 tapers, the outer diameter D4 ofworkpiece 106 also tapers. Thesecond portion 140 has a smaller outer diameter D5 that is configured to extend past the bottomingshoulder 126 of theinsert 104. In some embodiments, thesecond portion 140 is configured to extend into aformulation 136 stored in thecontainer 102. Where theworkpiece 106 transitions from the first outer diameter D4 to the second outer diameter D4, it forms ashoulder 142 configured to contact the bottomingshoulder 126 of theworkpiece 106 when inserted into theinsert 104. - The
mouth 112 ofcontainer 102 has aninner surface 144 with an inner diameter D6 that is at least as large as the first outer diameter D1 of theinsert 104. In some embodiments, D6 is about 0.005 inches to about 0.015 inches greater than D1, e.g., about 0.010 inches. This dimensional relationship facilitates insertion of theinsert 104 into themouth 112. For example, the bottomingshoulder 126 of theinsert 104 can be easily inserted into themouth 112. On the other hand, the inner diameter D6 of themouth 112 is the same size or even slightly smaller than the second outer diameter D2 of theinsert 104. In some embodiments, the inner diameter D6 is about 0.000 inches to about 0.010 inches smaller than the second outer diameter D2 of theinsert 104. Thus, asinsert 104 is pushed deeper into themouth 112, theouter surface 118 thereof eventually pushes against theinner surface 144 of themouth 112. The contact causes themouth 112 to expand radially outward and theannular wall 114 to contract radially inward. These counteracting forces cause thecontainer 102 and theinsert 104 to act as a collet that holdsworkpiece 106 in place. In some embodiments, one or both of theworkpiece 106 or themouth 112 is slotted to facilitate contraction and expansion, respectively. Theinner surface 144 of themouth 112 also includes aninsert engagement member 146 that is complementary to theinsert engagement member 124 of theinsert 104. The complementary workpiece engagement members are configured to engage one another when thecontainer 102 and theinsert 104 are fully coupled together, i.e., when theinsert 104 is fully received within themouth 112. In addition, themouth 112 includes at least onecap engagement member 148 that is configured to couple with thecap 108. InFIG. 1 , thecap engagement member 148 includes threads. In some embodiments, thecap engagement member 148 includes snaps, latches, and the like. -
FIG. 5 shows a cosmetic package that includespackaging system 100 in a fully assembled configuration. - As can be seen, the
workpiece 106 is received within theinsert 104, which is received within themouth 112 of thecontainer 102 such that all three are securely coupled together. InFIG. 5 , theworkpiece 106 is configured such that it extends into theformulation 136, e.g., to facilitate application of theformulation 136 to a skin portion of a user. The secure coupling is evident from the engagement of the complementaryinsert engagement member 124 and insertengagement member 146, and from the contact of theflange 128 of theinsert 104 with alip 150 of themouth 112. Due to its taperedouter surface 118, theinsert 104 pushes firmly against themouth 112 such that it is retained securely within. Referring back toFIG. 3 , when theworkpiece 106 is fully received within themouth 112, theworkpiece engagement member 130 is pushed radially inward by themouth 112 such that it “bites” into theworkpiece 106, further securing it in place. - To further secure the
workpiece 106 and theformulation 136 within thecontainer 102, thepackaging system 100 is provided with theoptional cap 108 that is configured to engage an outer surface of themouth 112. In some embodiments, thecap 108 is also configured to assist with assembly of thepackaging system 100 by urging theworkpiece 106 into themouth 112 of thecontainer 102. In the representative embodiment ofFIG. 1 , thecap 108 has a two-piece configuration that includes acap insert 152. In some embodiments, thecap 108 has a one-piece configuration or a multi-piece configuration. Features described herein with respect to thecap insert 152 are considered features of thecap 108 itself. Thecap insert 152 includes acontainer engagement member 154 that is configured to reversibly engage thecap engagement member 148 of thecontainer 102. InFIG. 1 ,container engagement member 154 is a thread. In some embodiments, thecontainer engagement member 154 instead includes snaps, latches, or the like. For additional security, thecap 108 is provided with agasket 156 that is configured to form a seal against theflange 128 of theinsert 104 when thecap 108 is coupled with thecontainer 102. In some embodiments, theflange 128 has a track formed therein to receive the gasket 156 (thus forming a better seal) and to align thecap 108 with theworkpiece 106. Thus, thegasket 156 prevents escape of theformulation 136 from thecontainer 102. - Together, the
container 102, insert 104,workpiece 106,cap 108, and theformulation 136 comprise a cosmetic package that is configured for easy, leak-free use and appealing aesthetics. - The detailed description set forth above in connection with the appended drawings, where like numerals reference like elements, are intended as a description of various embodiments of the present disclosure and are not intended to represent the only embodiments.
