Description
- This application claims priority to pending U.S. Provisional Application No. 62/829,206 filed Apr. 4, 2019.
- An embodiment of the disclosure here relates to a functional pillow for couples. The pillow can sit across a lap of a partner to provide physical support during intimacy. Other embodiments are also described.
- Intimacy between couples (i.e., two people) can involve physical contact. In some cases, intimate physical contact between couples can include oral sex (e.g., fellatio and/or cunnilingus).
- Performing oral sex (e.g., fellatio and/or cunnilingus) while both partners are lying in bed can be physically uncomfortable for the performing partner. For example, a person/partner who is lying down while performing fellatio may hold his or her head up in an awkward position. Furthermore, head movements (e.g. back and forth) may exacerbate discomfort and increase strain on neck and back muscles which support the weight and movements of the head. This discomfort and strain can result in pain (e.g., neck and back soreness) and shorter oral sex sessions than would otherwise occur if the performing partner was better supported.
- Pillows used for sleep or cushioning (e.g., rectangular pillows) can lack the requisite shape, density, and strength to provide sufficient support for oral sex while considering human factors/ergonomics. Wedge pillows (also known as sex pillows), can be large and bulky. Their shape and size can cause discomfort for the person receiving oral sex because the pillow can cause the receiver's body to tilt downward, causing blood flow to go to the head. Thus, it would be beneficial for a functional pillow to have a structure (e.g., shape and stiffness) that is designed to provide support for couples performing and receiving oral sex.
- In one embodiment, a functional pillow for couples has an inverted (upturned or upside-down) U-shape and a resting place (e.g. a scoop) to provide support and cushioning for a person performing oral sex. The scoop can be located on a roof portion of the pillow, the roof portion elevated by two or more legs of the pillow. By reducing the strain and discomfort associated with oral sex (e.g., in lying positions), the performer of oral sex can perform for longer and have an overall improved experience.
- The functional pillow can include a foam body having an upturned U-shape, the upturned U-shape having a roof, located between and elevated by a first leg and a second leg. A scoop is positioned at the roof (e.g., along a top edge of the pillow), providing a resting place for a head.

Whenever the shapes, relative positions and other embodiments of the parts described are not explicitly defined, the scope of the invention is not limited only to the parts shown, which are meant merely for the purpose of illustration. Also, while numerous details are set forth, it is understood that some embodiments of the disclosure may be practiced without these details. In other instances, well-known structures, and techniques have not been shown in detail so as not to obscure the understanding of this description.
- Referring now to
FIG. 1A , in one embodiment, afunctional pillow 1 for couples can have an inverted or upturned U-shape. The pillow is shown in an upright form. The U-shape (e.g., an arch) can be formed by afirst leg 2 that transitions to a roof portion 12 (e.g., through a first vertex 8). The roof can then transition to a second leg 4 (e.g. through a second vertex 10). 2 and 4 can elevate the roof portion, creating aLegs lap space 15. The pillow can sit across the lap of a receiving partner to provide physical support, where the first leg and the second leg are positioned on the outer sides of the lap of the receiver. The pillow can have ascoop 14 that provides a resting area for the head of the performer (e.g., the performing party can rest a chin or cheek on the scoop area). The scoop can be formed from anangled cut 16 on the topfront edge 18 of theroof 12. When the pillow is in arranged in position during use, the scoop can face towards the receiving partner's torso as shown inFIGS. 9A and 9B . - The cushion can have a
roof 12 that slopes downwards in two parts,roof section 7 and roof section 9, from a central ridge where the roof sections meet. The two roof sections can be of equal length. The first roof section can connect to a second roof section thereby creating an interior angle A5 facing into the lap space, having an angle of 180° or less. The angled roof can provide structural support for someone lying on the roof of the pillow. - In one embodiment, the cushion can have a pitched roof shape where the
outer corners 18, 19 and 20 are rounded, as shown inFIG. 2 . In one embodiment, as shown inFIG. 3 , theroof 24 can be substantially flat. In another embodiment, the cushion can have a rounded or rainbow shape where a first leg transitions gradually to arounded roof 25 and then back to a second leg, as shown inFIG. 4 . - Referring back to
FIG. 1A , the dimensions of the pillow can be sized so that alap space 15 can fit over the lap (e.g. thighs) of an average male or average female. In one embodiment,lap space 15 can have a length L10 between 12″ and 18″, for example, 15″. In one embodiment, the pillow can have a total height L18 between 22″ and 28″. In one embodiment, total height L18 can be 25″. In one embodiment, the scoop is located equidistant betweenleg 1 andleg 2. In one embodiment, the pillow lap space can have a minimum height L21 between 3.5″ and 6″. Height L21 can be determined by the interior edge length ofleg 2 and/orleg 4. - In one embodiment, length L1 and L2 of
leg 2 andleg 4 can be between 4″ to 6″, for example, 5″. In one embodiment, angles A1 and A3 atvertex 8 are between 100° and 130°, for example, 115°. Similarly, angles A2 and A4 atvertex 10 are between 100° and 130°, for example 115°. In one embodiment, the roof has an interior angle A5 between 125° and 135°, for example, 115°. In one embodiment, the pillow has a width L14 between 8″ and 12″, for example, 12″. In one embodiment, lengths L11 and L12 of the roof can be between 12″ and 15″, for example, 13.5″. In one embodiment,roof 12 can have a thickness L5, L6 between 3″ to 5″. In one embodiment, the cross section of the first leg and the second leg are the same in shape and size. - Referring now to
FIGS. 1B and 1C , the pillow can have alateral side wall 42 that is positioned away from the scoop and alateral side wall 44 that meets the roof top to form the top edge where the scoop is positioned. 46 and 48 are positioned between the lateral side walls and connect the lateral side walls to each other. Each of the legs can have a leg under-Leg walls 50 and 52 that are flat or substantially flat, allowing the pillow to stand upright during use. The lateral side walls can also be flat or substantially flat, without humps or protrusions, allowing the pillow to be positioned as insurface FIGS. 9A-9F without interference. The lateral side walls can be parallel to each other. Similarly, the leg walls can be parallel to each other. - In one embodiment, the dimensions of the pillow are configured also based on the stiffness of the foam, so that the legs are thick enough (e.g., cross sectional length and width) to provide support for the roof and for a person lying on the roof, when the pillow is placed in an upright position. For example, as shown in
FIG. 9A , a performing party can lay laterally across the roof of the pillow perpendicular to a receiving party that has his or her lap positioned inlap space 15. The cheek or face of the performing party can be positioned comfortably on the scoop of the pillow, while the performing party's chest and/or shoulder rests on the roof of the pillow. In another example, as shown inFIG. 9B , a performing party can lay parallel with the receiving party, the chin of the performing party laying comfortably on the scoop surface of the pillow. - It should be understood that the dimensions described herein are meant to be illustrative rather than limiting, and that the dimensions can vary depending on the size of the targeted population. The dimensions can vary to fit various sized peoples, for example, different dimensions can be determined for a small, medium, large and x-large size.
- In one embodiment, the
scoop 81 can have a convex shape, as shown inFIG. 5 . In other embodiments, thescoop 83 can have a flat surface, as shown inFIG. 7 , or concave. In other embodiments, the scoop can be formed by one or more cuts, for example, by two cuts, as shown inFIG. 6 . Referring back toFIG. 7 , the scoop can have an angle A6 relative tolateral side wall 44 from 20° to 70° or more preferably from 30° to 60°. In one embodiment, the angle is 45°. The angled scoop can allow the performing party to position his or her head to perform oral sex. Referring now toFIG. 8 , the scoop can have a scoop width greater than 1.5″ and a scoop length greater than 3″, to provide sufficient surface to comfortably allow a performer's face or head to rest. - Advantageously, the performing partner can rest his or her head/face on the scoop while also being positioned over the receiving partner's genitalia. The performing partner can perform oral sex with his or head being supported on the scoop. The body of the performing partner can be laid laterally across the receiving partner's lap (see
FIG. 9A ) or in-line with the receiving party's lap (seeFIG. 9B ), depending on preference. This can reduce strain and discomfort, particularly to the torso and neck of the performing partner. Additionally, the support of the pillow allows the performing partner to utilize both hands rather than needing one to hold him or herself up. For example, while the performing partner lies laterally across the receiving partner's lap she can hold the receiving partner's penis with one hand and access the testicles with the other hand, for the receiving partner's added pleasure, by reaching under the arch of the pillow (seeFIG. 9F ). - The scoop can have a) an oval shape, b) a leaf shape having a top arc-shaped edge that meets a bottom arc-shaped edge as shown in
FIG. 1A , c) a triangle shape, as shown inFIG. 8 , d) or a diamond shape as shown inFIG. 10 . The scoop shape and size can vary, e.g., based on how the cut is formed. - Referring now to
FIG. 2 , the pillow can have acover 32 that covers abody 34. In one embodiment, the cover of the functional pillow can be a cloth (e.g., microfiber, cotton, spandex, polyester, etc.). In one embodiment, the pillow cover can have a fastening element (e.g., buttons, Velcro or a zipper) that allows the cover to be removed and detached from a foam cushion of the pillow. In one aspect, the cover can be formed from a polymer-based sheet or layer. The cover can be a washable cover. - Referring now to
FIG. 2 , abody 34 of the functional pillow can be formed from a foam such as a conventional polyfoam (e.g., polyurethane foam), a latex-based foam (e.g., formed from rubber products) or other equivalent technology. In one embodiment, the foam density is a medium density foam. In one embodiment, the foam is a high density and/or high resiliency foam. The foam body can have a compression of 2.5 pounds per cubic feet (PCF) or greater. The stiffness provided by the foam body can help maintain the shape of the pillow during usage. In particular, the legs and roof of the pillow can provide support against a person's weight and support to the torso, head and neck of the performer, while still providing enough softness for comfort. In one embodiment, the pillow body is undivided, formed from a single body of foam or other equivalent technology, thus providing stiffness throughout and maintaining the body's shape. - In one aspect of the disclosure, as shown in
FIG. 9C , the pillow can be turned over (e.g. roof section down to create a U-shape) and placed under a receiving party's lower back and buttocks to slightly elevate the area, thereby causing less strain (neck flexion) of the performing partner. This configuration can be particularly beneficial if the receiving party is a female, thereby elevating the genitalia of the female receiving party. The functional pillow can provide support for intercourse For example, a position where the partners are facing each other (seeFIG. 9D ) or where one partner is facing away from the other partner (seeFIG. 9G ). Additionally, the turned over pillow can be placed on the ground to support the females knees as she kneels to perform oral sex while the receiving partner sits at the bedside or while the receiving partner is standing. Additionally, when performing oral sex, the performing party can reach the receiving party's genitals with a hand through the lap space of the pillow, thus providing additional stimulation, as shown inFIG. 9F . - The functional pillow can also support non-sex related activities in bed, specifically for reading a book or using a smart phone, tablet, or laptop (see
FIG. 9G ). The functional pillow can elevate these items, thereby reducing neck strain. The pillow can be used to breastfeed a toddler who sits on the pillow facing their mother's chest while the pillow sits across the mother's lap. - While certain embodiments have been described and shown in the accompanying drawings, it is to be understood that such are merely illustrative of and not restrictive on the broad invention, and that the invention is not limited to the specific constructions and arrangements shown and described, since various other modifications may occur to those of ordinary skill in the art. It should also be understood that while some features are shown in the figures with certain embodiments, those features can be combined with other embodiments described in this disclosure and/or shown in different figures. For example, the cover and body of
FIG. 2 can be present in the embodiments ofFIGS. 1A, 3, and 4 . Similarly, each of the scoop shapes ofFIGS. 6, 7, and 8 can be present in any of the embodiments ofFIGS. 1, 3 , and 4.
Claims (17)
1. A functional pillow for couples, comprising:
a foam body having an upturned U-shape, the upturned U-shape having a roof, elevated by one or more legs; and
a scoop, positioned at a top edge of the upturned U-shape, providing a resting place for a head.
2. The functional pillow of claim 1 , wherein the scoop is located on the roof.
3. The functional pillow of claim 1 , wherein the roof has two roof sections that slope downward from a central ridge where the two roof sections meet.
4. The functional pillow of claim 1 , wherein the scoop is formed from an angled cut on the top edge.
5. The functional pillow of claim 1 , wherein the one or more legs includes a first leg and a second leg that elevate the roof creating a lap space between the first leg and the second leg.
6. The functional pillow of claim 5 , wherein the lap space has a length between 12 and 18 inches.
7. The functional pillow of claim 5 , wherein the lap space has a minimum height between 3.5 inches and 6 inches.
8. The functional pillow of claim 1 , further comprising a cover that covers the foam body.
9. The functional pillow of claim 8 , wherein the cover has a fastening element that allows the cover to be removed and detached from the foam body.
10. The functional pillow of claim 1 , wherein the foam body has a compression of 2.5 pounds cubic feet (PCF) or greater.
11. The functional pillow of claim 1 , wherein the foam body is undivided, formed from a single body of foam.
12. The functional pillow of claim 1 , wherein scoop has a triangle shape.
13. The functional pillow of claim 1 , wherein scoop has one of an oval shape, a leaf shape, or a diamond shape.
14. The functional pillow of claim 1 , wherein scoop has a flat surface.
15. The functional pillow of claim 1 , wherein the functional pillow has a pitched roof shape.
16. The functional pillow of claim 14 , wherein outer corners are rounded.
17. The functional pillow of claim 1 , wherein the one or more legs comprises a first leg and a second leg, where the first leg transitions to the roof, and then back to a second leg.
