Description

HHHHH RM Patented Nov. 5, 1935 UNITEDl STATES PATENT OFFCE.
, 2 Claims.
My invention relates to improvements in a hat form adapted for use particularly in the cleaning or brushing of hats, and which may be made in a plurality of sizes for use in cleaning various sizes and kinds of hats.
Another and further object of my invention is 'the provision of a hat form which is adapted to be used in the cleaning or brushing of hats and which is so fashioned that a hat can be placed inside of the form for the purpose of cleaning the inner part of the hat and the under side of the brim, or the form in its closed position can be inserted into a hat vso that the outer side and brim of the hat can be cleaned or brushed against a firm body and the cleaning or brushing effectively performed.
Another and further object of my invention is the provision of a hat form which is of thin, light material, preferably of metal, and which can be easily and cheapiy manufactured, will perform satisfactory service for an indefinite length of time, and which preferably is made in two sections, which sections are movably connected together to allow for the placing of a hat either inside of the crown portion or outside thereof, as may be desired.
These and other objects of my invention will be more fully and better understood by reference to the accompanying sheet of drawing, in which- Figure l is an elevational View of the two sections forming my improved form;
Figure 2 is a side elevational View showing the form in its closed position, over which a hat may be tted; and
Figure 3 is an elevational View showing the form in its extended position adapted to receive the crown of a hat.
Referring now specifically to the drawing, and in which like reference characters refer to like parts throughout, one of the sections I0 is shown, comprising a crown portion and a brim portion integrally formed therewith, and a corresponding portion il being shown in the cooperating hat form section, also comprising a crown and brim portion. A connecting member I2 is secured to the member IU in any approved manner as by spot welding, and adapted to be secured on the under side of the member I0 adjacent the marginal edge thereof, and over which the marginal edge of the member II is adapted to slide so that when the form is in its closed position the edges of the members I0 and II meet in abutting relationship with each other.
Slots I4, I4 are provided in the member I2 for purposes hereinafter described, while each of the sections I Il and II have rim portions which exu tend therearound and are integrally formed with the members I0 and II, the rim portion on the member II has projecting end portions adapted to underlie the rim portion of the member I0 when the edges are placed in cooperative relation with each other. Short studs I'l, I'l are provided which are welded into openings formed adjacent the marginal edge of the member II and are adapted to be received into the slots Iii in the member I2 and have heads thereon of slightly greater width than the slots I to securely hold the device in operation and prevent the separation of the two members, and also as means to limit the distance of separation of these two members when the sections are pulled apart for the purpose of allowing a hat to be placed inside of the sections for transportation, or cleaning the lower part of the brim and inside of the hat if desired.
In forming the device, which may be made preferably of pressed sheet metal or the like, the crown and rim portions of the device can be integrally formed by being pressed into shape, and the member I2 fitted to one of the portions afterwards, as may be desired. The sections are thereupon brought into cooperative relation with each other by fitting the edge of the member II over the fore portion of the face of the member I2. The studs I7, I'I, which are exceedingly short, are then inserted through the slots I4. I in the member I2 and into holes previously formed in the member II adjacent the forward edge thereof and preferably are welded to this member. The members II and I2 can thereafter be pushed together for the purpose of placing a hat thereover or opened so that a hat may Ybe placed inside the form.
In operation, the device is exceedingly simple in that when it is desired to clean a hat, particularly of the felt variety, on the outer side therein the crown of the form and the inside of the crown and the lower portion of the brim of the hat cleaned. The hat may be allowed to remain in the form or on the outer side thereof, if de- 55 sired, for purposes of transportation without possibility of the hat being crushed or otherwise distorted in shape.
While I have described more or less precisely the details of construction, I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself thereto, as I contemplate changes in form and the proportion 'of parts and the substitution of equivalents as circumstances may suggest or render expedient without departingv'from the :spirit-or scope of my invention.
- I claim:
1. In combination, a hat form comprising ra pair of sections of thin, non-yielding material, each section having a crown and brim portion having substantially smooth inside and outside surfaces, the brim portions being in overlapped relation at each of their ends, a connectingimember secured to one crown portion along one of its edges and having slots therein adjacent its free edge, and fastening members xedly mounted in the other crown portion adjacent the free edge thereof and extending through the slots in said connecting member, the said brim and crown sections being adjustably joined together.
2. In combination, a hat form comprising a pair of sections of thin, non-yielding material, each section having a crown and brim portion, the brim portions being in overlapped relation at each of `their ends, a connecting member secured to one crown portion along its free edge having slots therein adjacent the free edge of 'the connecting member, and studs xedly mounted in the other crown portion adjacent the free edge thereof and extending through the slots in said connecting member, the said brim and crown portions being movably joined together, both the inside and outside surfaces of the form being smooth and unbroken.
