IMPROVEMENT IN PAIL AND TUB EARS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 201,845, dated March 26, 1878; application filed February 25, 1878.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE W. STARK, of Wenona, in the county of Bay and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pail and Tub Ears; and I do declare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, and being a part of this specification.

Figure 1 is a perspective View. Fig. 2 is a sectional view, showing the ear attached 'to a pail or tub stave.

My invention consists of a malleable'pail or tub ear; and it is provided with inwardly-projecting lugs and ends, which engage with the stave of a pail or tub, as is more fully herein;

after set forth.

In the drawing, A represents a tub or pail ear, cast from malleable metal, and is provided with the inwardly-projecting studs a a, inwardly-turned ends 0 c, and a bail-hook, b, on its top. This ear is placed over the rim of a pail or tub, and is secured in place by compressing or driving together its open ends,

which forces the studs a a and ends 0 0 into the wood. Thebail is then hooked into the hook I) on the top of the ear, after which the said hook b may be driven down upon the ear, thus securing the bail in place. If desired, this hook b may be dispensed with, and an eye cast upon the ear, in which case the hook must be formed on the end of the bail.

' I cast this ear with an inclined top, as shown, so that it will fit the rim of the pail or tub, which is usually chamfered off on its upper inner edge, while at the same time it prevents the bail from wearing the wood.

What I claim as my invention is- As a new article of manufacture, the pail or tub earA, of cast malleable metal, and adapted to be compressed over the rim of a pail or tub,

having the studs a a, bent ends 0 c, and hook b, constructed substantially as described and shown.
