Description

Patented Oct. 15, 1935 UNITED STATES oFFic LOCK Application December 10, 1934, Serial No. 756,880
3 Claims.
This invention relates to a lock for use in connection with the extendible tops of automatic leaf, lift leaf and jump leaf tables and has for its object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set 5 forth, means capable of being readily installed with respect to a table of the types referred to for the purpose of locking the extendible top of the table securely against accidental opening either when the top is closed with its leaf nested therebelow, or with the top extended with the leaf positioned to form a part of the table top.
As iswell known, extension tables having a nested leaf below the table top are of types whereby one type will have automatic means for elevating the leaf from its nested position into the same plane of the table top to enlarge the table and another whereby the nested leaf is moved manually into the plane referred to. It is also well known that these types of tables are not always satisfactory in use, as the two halves of the top moving freely, as they do on the table frame, tend to spread apart leaving a gap in the middle of the table, or they may be pulled apart accidentally. To overcome this objection is the aim of this invention and which is accomplished by a means as hereinafter set forth for securely locking the halves of the table top in abutting relation and for securely locking the extension leaf in abutting relation with respect to the halves of the table top.
Further objects of the-invention are to provide. in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a means for the purpose referred to which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable,
readily installed with respect to the table, thoroughly efiicient in its use and comparatively inexpensive.
To the above ends essentially and to others which may hereinafter appear, the locking means, in accordance with this invention, consists of such parts and such combination of parts which fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary view in side elevation of an extension table of the nested leaf type illustrating in full lines the leaf 'intable top extending position and in dotted lines the leaf in non-extending position with respect to the table top and further showing in full and dotted lines the arrangement of the elements of the lock with respect to the table frame and top when the table is in extended and non-extended positions.
Figure 2 is an inverted plan of the table top,
leaf and frame with the top extended and showing the adaptation of the elements of the lock with respect to the table top and frame.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view in vertical section, upon an enlarged scale, of the table top and "5" frame having combined therewith respectively I striker, the top edge of the locking member and a clearance in the table frame for the outer striker. 4 p
Referring to the drawing I generally indicates an extension table of the nested leaf type. The 20 nested leaf of the table having means, not shown, of known form coacting therewith for elevating and lowering it. As is well known, the table I of the type referred to, includes a frame 2 formed of sides 3, 4, ends 5, 6 and cutouts I centrally of its 25 sides to provide a nest 8 for the leaf 9. The table top includes the two like sections or halves I8, I I provided on their inner faces with the equalizing slides I2, I3 arranged in spaced parallel relation and toothed as at I 4., The teeth of the slides mesh 30- with a pinion I5. The legs of table I are indicated at I6. The structure aforesaid is illustrated for the purpose of showing the adaptation with an extension table of a locking means in accordance with this invention. 35
The locking means includes a clearance I! which is formed by a rectangular cutout in the top edge I8 of frame end 6 adjacent to one side of the vertical median of the latter, a pair of spaced endwise aligning strikers I9, 20, a carrier for the 40 strikers and which is provided by the table top section II, an adjustable pivoted locking member 2I for selective coaction with the strikers, a frictional latch 22 for member 2|, and a headed pivot 23 for member 2| which extends through the lat- 45 ter and latch 22 and is anchored to frame end 6. The strikers I9, 20 are of like form and each consists of a horizontal leg 24 and a leg 25 which depends from the outer end of and is disposed at an inward inclination with respect to leg 24. The 50 latter is formed with apertures 26 for the passage of holdfast devices 2'! for anchoring it against the lower face of table top section II. The strikers I9,
20 are termed respectively an inner and an outer striker. The strikers are arranged in alignment 55 with and are of less width and less height than that of clearance I1. The inner striker I9 is positioned on the lower face of table top section II between the transverse median and outer end edge of the latter. The outer striker is positioned on the lower face of table top section between the inner striker and the outer end edge of section I I. The outer striker coacts with the locking member 2| for securely locking sections II], II in abutting relation when the table top is not extended. The inner striker coacts with the locking member 2| for securely locking the table top sections in abutting relation with respect to leaf 9 when the latter is arranged in position for extending the table top. The clearance I! permits of the other striker being moved from a point exteriorly of the outer face of frame end 6 to a position in close proximity to the inner face of said end 6.
The locking member 2| is formed of an inner straight part 28, an outer part 29 constituting a handle and an intermediate inclined part 3| which ofisets the outer part with respect to the inner part and frame end 6. The member 21 is of greater length than the height of frame end 6. The part 3! is of less length than that of parts 28, 29. The part 28 bears against the inner face of frame end B and has in proximity to its lower end an opening 32. The part 28 has a rounded upper end 33 which, when member'2l is in looking position, is arranged in close proximity to the lower face of table top section I l.
The pivot 23 is of headed screw like form having tapered threaded portion 34 which engages in frame end 6, a portion 35 of uniform diameter extended from the inner face of frame end 6 and a head 36. The part 28 of member 2| is mounted on portion 35 of pivot 23.
The frictional latch 22 consists of a split spring washer 22' and a non-split washer 22". The washer 22 is interposed between the washer 22" and the part 28 of member 2 I The washer 22" is interposed between head 36 and washer 22'. The latch 22 functions to frictionally latch member 21 in any position in which it has been adjusted.
The look only looks one end of the table, the other end being locked by means of the teeth on the equalizing slides coacting with the pinion.
When the table is in non-extended position the upper end of part '28 of the member 2| is to be positioned in abutting relation with respect to outer side face of the leg 25 of the striker 20,
whereby the sections of the table top will be securely held in abutting relation. When a leaf is employed to extend the table top, striker 20 is moved outwardly through clearance l1 and striker l9 positioned to oppose in close relation 5 the inner face of frame end 6. The member 2| is then shifted to have the upper end of its part 28 to abutting relation with respect to the outer side face. of the leg 25 of striker I9 whereby the leaf and sections of the table top will be held in abutting relation.
What I claim is:
1. In a lock for an extendible sectional table top, an inner and an outer striker arranged in endwise opposed spaced relation and adapted to 15 be secured to the lower face of and bodily carried with a section of said top, said strikers including depending legs at their outer ends, and an adjustable pivotally supported locking member for selectively abutting the legs of said outer 20 and inner strikers for securely locking said table section respectively in non-extended and extended positions.
2. In a lock for an extendible sectional table top, an inner and an outer striker arranged in 25 endwise opposed spaced relation and adapted to be secured to the lower face of and bodily carried with a section of said top, said strikers including depending legs at their outer ends, and an adjustable pivotally supported locking member for selectively abutting the legs of said outer and inner strikers for securely locking said table section respectively in non-extended and extended positions, said legs being disposed at an inclination with respect to the lower face of said 35 table section.
3. In a lock for an extendible sectional table top, an inner and an outer striker arranged in endwise opposed spaced relation and adapted to be secured to the lower face of and bodily car- 40 ried with a section of said top, said strikers including depending legs at their outer ends, an adjustable pivotally supported locking member for selectively abutting the legs of said outer and inner strikers for securely locking said table 5 30- 4 tion respectively in non-extended and extended positions, and a frictional latch for detachably securing said member in adjusted and non-adjusted positions.
