Patented Oct. 15, 1935 PATENT OFFICE BINDING R COVER FOR PERIODICALS ND THE LIKE William Hull, Blackburn, England Application October 2, 1933, Serial No. 691,849 In Great Britain October 7, 1932 2 Claims. (Cl. 129-42) This invention relates to a binding or cover for perodicals and the like comprising two cover boards connected by an intermediate portion and provided with a plate that extends across the intermediate portion and is permanently or detachably secured to the cover and is formed with slits for the passage of tapes which are threaded through back loops or staples in the periodicals and secured at the back of the plate by wedges,
buckles, or other fastening devices. The present invention has for its object to simplify the construction and cheapen the production of a binding or cover of this class and also to facilitate the operation of gaining access to the back of the plate for releasing and securing the ends of the tapes.
According to this invention access is obtained to the back of the plate through the instrumentality of one or more pockets situated internally or externally in the cover boards to receive one or more flaps projecting from the plate, or a flap projecting from the intermediate portion between the cover boards, or from a cover board.

In the example shown in Fig. 3 an external pocket a is formed or provided in the cover board 35 A and the two cover boards A, A are hinged to the plate C by canvas (1 or other suitable means. In the example shown in Fig. 4 the cover boards A, A and plate C are made in one piece and hinges are formed by pressing, indenting, or scoring the board at F. The intermediate portion 5 B between the cover boards A, A is permanently attached to the cover board A and its free edge terminates in a flap b that is adapted to enter the external pocket a in the other cover board A. When this flap is pulled out, access is obtainable 10 to the back of the plate for manipulating and securing the tapes D. By the arrangements described the fastening devices are always concealed Whether used for a temporary or permanent binding and no extra operation is required 15 for finishing oil a completed volume.
Cords or laces may be substituted for the tapes and pass through small holes in the plate and be tied or otherwise secured behind the latter.
What I claim as my invention and desire to se- 20 cure by Letters Patent in the United States is:--
1. A binding or cover for periodicals and the like, comprising a pair of spaced cover boards and an intermediate attaching. plate, a flap hinged externally to one cover board, and an out- WILLIAM HULL.
