Abstract

A shield that is a riot shield that has certain ballistic properties. The shield is configured to give an individual protection during riots, and the like, from thrown cans, bottles, and rocks, among other projectiles, but also will give the user ballistic protection in the event that it is needed at the time.

Description

    BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
  • This invention deals with a shield that is a riot shield that has certain ballistic properties.
  • This shield is configured to give an individual protection during riots, and the like, from thrown cans, bottles, and rocks, among other projectiles, hut also will give the user ballistic protection in the event that it is needed at the time.
  • The shield is lightweight and cab be manipulated by the user to protect himself or herself. The riot shield of this invention is configured such that almost all of the riot shield is covered by a ballistic shield, but leaves an open space near the top of the riot shield that is not covered by the ballistic protection that allows the user to have clear vision.
  • The inventor herein is aware of one publication, namely, U.S. Pat. No. 8,857,311, which issued Oct. 14, 1014 to warren in which there is a ballistic shield that is comprised of more than one layer. This, patent discloses a composite of various materials that are laminated together to get the ballistic protection. The inventor herein is not aware of any prior art publications or shields that deal with a double shielding configuration such as set forth herein.
  • THE INVENTION
  • Thus, what is disclosed and claimed herein is a shield having ballistic protection, said shield consisting of a riot shield having a top portion and firmly attached, to as inside surface of said riot shield, a ballistic shield. The ballistic shield has a back surface. The ballistic shield has fixedly attached to said back surface, a set of carrying handles for the ballistic shield. The riot shield has outside edges and each outside edge is curved inwardly towards the ballistic shield. The ballistic shield covers only a portion of the riot shield to provide open vision for a user, near the top of the riot shield.
  • BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
  • FIG. 1 is a full front view of a shield of this invention.
  • FIG. 2 is a full back view of the shield of FIG. 1.
  • FIG. 3 is a full top view of the shield of FIG. 1.
  • FIG. 4 is a full side view of the shield of FIG. 1.
  • FIG. 5 is a view in perspective of a portion ox the shield of FIG. 1.
  • DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
  • The invention disclosed and claimed herein deals with a riot shield having a ballistic shield attached on an inside surface.
  • Turning now to FIG. 1, there is shown a full front view of a shield 1 of this invention. There is shown a riot shield 2, and a ballistic shield 3 that is attached to the riot shield 2. The figure shows bolts 4 as the mechanism for fastening (by way of example), although, the two shields could be fixed together by straps, screws, and the like, although the bolts 4 could be used to merely bolt one shield to another, it is contemplated within the scope of this invention to use the bolts for attaching one shield to another, but to also use the same bolts to fix handles to the ballistic shield.
  • It should be noted that the riot shield 2 has two outside edges 5 and 5′ where, in this example, said edges are curved inwardly towards the ballistic shield 3, in a manner that there is side protection from the riot shield 2, although, this is not a requirement of this invention. Note FIG. 3 which is a full top view of the shield 1. The riot shield is clear and colorless.
  • It should be further noted that the ballistic shield 3 does not cover the entire area of the riot shield 2, in that, an open space 6 is left uncovered by the ballistic shield such that there is an open, clear space at the top 7 of the riot shield for the user to view through.
  • FIG. 2 shows a full back view of the shield 1 wherein there is shown one placement of the handles on the ballistic shield 3. The handle 8 is open, in that, an arm can be inserted from the bottom of the handle, while the handles 9 and 10 are fully connected handles. FIG. 5, is a full view of the shield in perspective showing the open and closed, connected, handles.
  • Eventhough the ballistic shield 3 is shown as covering only a center portion (C of FIGS. 2 and 4) of the riot shield 2, the ballistic shield 3 can be used on the full area of the riot shield 2 except for the viewing area 6. In other words, contrary to what is shown In FIGS. 1 and 2, the ballistic shield can extend clear to the bottom edge of the riot shield 2 depending on the desires of the manufacturer. Additional weight is a factor in deciding use full area placement.
  • The riot shield, of this invention can be manufactured from the same components that prior art shields are manufactured from. Also, the ballistic shields can be manufactured from standard aramid composites where the weave process is a laminate process.
  • Typically, the overall length of the shield of this invention is about 2 feet to about 4 feet and the width is configured to fit the body of the person using it, which would be a nominal width of about 2 feet.
