Abstract
A paint brush has a built in edger system that controls paint application and eliminates the need for masking tape designed to paint precise linear edges. The edger system is attached to the brush as a mechanical attachment. When paint is applied to a surface with the brush, it's application is limited and the paint brush produces very precise linear edges where the paint boundary on the painted surface is located.
Description
- The field of the invention is painting accessories.
- Paint brushes often have to be used in conjunction with making tape which serves as a boundary of physical nature which can even be painted on, but the removal of which allows the imposition of precise linear boundaries, and edges where the paint ceases to be applied.
- One objective of the invention is to make a new type of paint brush. Another object of the invention is to eliminate the need for edging masking paint tape to surfaces where the paint is applied. Yet another object of the invention is to attach an edging device to a paint brush for simultaneous edging while paint is being applied.
- The invention is a paint brush to which a permanent edging device is attached.
- The device can be retracted for general surface painting, and deployed during edge coating of the paint along paint boundaries.
- An open cell foam, or bristle based paint brush has a polymer or metal edging shield which guides the paint application along a preferred edge. The edge opposite the preferred edge has the freedom to expand the application surface by speeding out. The edging surface is blocked by the edge shield and format the paint along a precise edge, without the need to apply masking tape.
- In one preferred embodiment, a wooden handled paint brush with traditional horse hair natural, or synthetic bristles has a spring loaded, retractable edging device which covers one side of the brush to push paint towards the application surface, and a linear edging device contact surface with the painted surface. In another preferred embodiment, the edging device is attached to the brush by a spring hinge, and folds back one hundred and eighty degrees away from the brush and, subsequently locks in the open position when not deployed for edging. In this embodiment the release of the attachment mechanism causes the edger to snap back into deployed position for use.
- 1.A This view shows the paint brush edger device retracted so the the brush may be used normally. At the base of the handle is a bushing based insert for an extension pole.
- 1.B This view shows the employed edging device as seen from below the brush. It is closed on three sides to block paint from migrating sideways during application. It also prevents back-dripping.
- 1.C This view shows the rectangular magnetic attachment point which retains the coiled-spring mounted edging device when not in use.
Claims (14)
1) A paint brush with an attached edging device which prevents the application of paint outside the boundaries of the edging device, resulting in precise linear boundaries of paint application.
2) The claim in 1 where the paint brush handle is modified at it's extremity to be attached to a pole for extended reach.
3) The claim in 1 where the edging device has both elastomer edge and a post-application-absorption device to ensure protection against smearing of the paint.
4) The claim in 1 where the outer edges of the edging device curve in order to redirect paint flowing outward towards the edges back towards the center of the outward face of the application end.
5) The claim in 1 where the edging device is made of cast-polymer-elastomer.
6) The claim in 1 where the edging device is made of elastomer-edged metal.
7) The claim in 1 where the edging device is made of plastic.
8) The claim in 1 where the edging device is detachable from the brush.
9) The claim in 1 where the the edging device is made from composite material.
10) The claim in 1 where the brush has fiber based paint application bristles.
11) The claim in 1 where the brush has an open cell foam-based paint applicator.
12) The claim in 1 where the base of the brush screws onto an extension pole.
13) The claim in 1 where the base clamps onto an extension pole.
14) The claim in 1 where the absorbent is wetted by a solvent reservoir for removing paint.
