CORNELIUS H. BUTLER, OF-NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN BROOYM-BRACES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 201,496, dated March 19, 1878; application filed January 5, 1878.
I To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CORNELIUS HENRY BUTLER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Broom-Braces, of which the following is a specification:
The object of this invention is to provide a neat, cheap, and effective means for holding the broom-bristles compactly together, and at the same time afford a natural elasticity thereto, the construction and operation of my invention being described as follows:
Figure 1 represents a plan of my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan, showing the bottom side up.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
In the case here presented I make the Whole of my broom-brace out of one continuous piece of steel wire-that is to say, commencing at the hooked end A, I run the wire up to the point B, at which place it is given a sharp bend, and is then given a complete turn, so as to form a ring or hole for the broom-handle. The wire is then given a sharp bend at G, and, running downward, forms the opposite side or brace. At the lower end of this side an eye or loop is formed, as shown at D. The wire is now bent around a suitable form until it reaches the point E, where an eye or loop is formed 5 and, continuing around the said form, the wire is passed through the eye or loop D, and there secured. The other end of the said wire is run through the eye or loop E and secured, as shown in the drawing.
It will here be observed that my device may be applied to brooms of various sizes, as the hole formed for the handle by the twisting of the wire forms a spring, which will give, so as to accommodate itself to any sized broomhandle; and, furthermore, the wire sides, sinking in the broom-head, serve to stiffen the spring of the broom, and also serve to hold the brace in an even position on the broom; Whereas others now in use are not constructed in one piece, and are liable to cut and twist on the broom.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 1 A broom-brace constructed of a single Wire, said wire being bent so as to form a spring top or socket for the broom-handle and an elongated loop for the bristles, in the manner substantially as herein set forth, shown,'and
described.
