This invention relates to a match holding attachment for cigarette packages and particularly to an attachment for securing a book type package of matches to a package of cigarettes.

The general purpose of the invention is to provide a convenient, easily applied and inexpensive attachment for cigarette packages whereby a package of matches of the book type may be readily attached to a cigarette package and will provide a convenient assembly of a package of cigarettes and a package of matches for use by smokers.

The invention will be better understood by reference to the accompanying drawing illustrating one embodiment thereof and the following description of this embodiment, it being understood that the invention is not limited to the specific form thereof shown and described.

Referring to the drawing, the improved attachment comprises a generally cup-shaped receptacle for snugly receiving the bottom portion of a package of cigarettes therein, this receptacle including a front portion I0, side portions II, II, a rear portion I2 and a bottom portion I3. The receptacle may be made from a blank of sheet metal such as shown in Figure 5, folded along the dotted lines indicated thereon. The front portion I has an upwardly projecting support I0. This support is preferably bent rearwardly slightly as indicated in Figure 4, whereby it is adapted to be sprung to a straightened position by insertion of a package of cigarettes therein as shown in Figure 2 so as snugly to hold a package of matches against a face of a package of cigarettes by the resilient action of the metal in the sprung support. The sides II are folded to positions perpendicular to the bottom I3 and the front portion I0 may have projecting portions IIII thereon for folding about the adjacent edges of the side portions ll at the vertical joints between the front I 0 and the sides II. The back I2 of the receptacle may be cut away along curving lines indicated at I! and the back is folded up to a position perpendicular to the bottom I3 and may have projecting portions I2 thereon adapted to be folded about the adjacent edges of the sides along the vertical Joints between the back I2 and sides I I. p

The attachment is adapted to receive or to be pushed onto the bottom end of a package of cigarettes indicated at C, the attachment being so formed that the bottom end of the package fits snugly therein and the tangs II yielding more or less to the relatively downward force of the movement of the cigarette package C into the container grip the bottom portion of the package C tending to resist'displacement of the attachment downwardly from the package thereby serving to hold the attachment to the package for its intended use. A package P of book type matches may be assembled with the attachment either before or after assembly of the cigarette package C therewith. The free end of the cover strip 8 is inserted upwardly from the outside of the re+ ceptacle through the opening IIl and the strip 40 S is drawn through the opening Ifl to bring the bottom of the package up onto shelf Ill with the matches in the package supported in front of the support III and to bring the top of the match package over the top of the support III whereby the front of the cover strip 5 may be folded downwardly and the free end of the cover strip 8 engaged under the secured end of the cover strip in the usual way to close thebook. The mounting of the book of matches on the attachment is clearly shown in Figures 1 and 2.

It will be apparent that the invention or features thereof may be employed with variousforms of cigarette-containers or cases for the attachment of book type packages of matches thereto. Modifications of the invention may be resorted to without departing from the spirit therebottom end thereof and having one or more sides provided with a downwardly and inwardly extending-package grippingtang and having a. front portion provided with a shelf at the bottom thereof, said front portion having an opening above the shelf through which the cover strip of a book type package of matches may be inserted, the upper edge of said opening being bent outwardly to facilitate insertion of said strip, the upper part of said front portion providing an upwardly extending support of resilient material which is normally bent slightly rearwardly and is straightened by securing said attachment to a cigarette package, and a package of book type matches having the cover strip thereof inserted inwardly through said opening and brought upwardly over said upwardly extending support, the bottom of said package being seated on said shelf and the matches therein arranged in front of said upwardly extending support, said support resiliently urging the back of said package of matches against a face of the package of cigarettes.

The combination with a package of cigarettes of an attachment snugly fitted onto the bottom end thereof and having a front portion provided with a shelf at the bottom thereof, said front portion having an opening above the shelf through which the cover strip of a book type package of matches may be inserted, the upper edge of said opening being bent outwardly to facilitate insertion of said strip, the upper part of said front portion providing an upwardly extending support of resilient material which is normally bent slightly rearwardly and is straightened by securing said attachment to a cigarette package, and a package of book type matches having the cover strip thereof inserted inwardly through said opening and brought upwardly over said support, the bottom of said package being seated on said shelf and the matches thercin arranged in front of said support, said support resiliently urging the back of said package of matches against a face of the package of cigarettes.

The combination with a package ofcigarettes of an attachment snugly fitted onto the bottom end thereof and having one or more sides provided with a downwardly and inwardly extending package gripping tang and having a front portion provided with a shelf at the bottom thereof, said front portion having an opening above the shelf through which the cover strip of a book type package of matches may be inserted, the upper edge'of said opening being bent outwardly to facilitate insertion of said strip, the upper part of said front portion providing an upwardly extending support, and a package of book type matches having the cover strip thereof inserted inwardly through said opening and brought upwardly over said support, the bottom of said package being seated on said shelf and the matches therein arranged in front of said support.

The combination with a package of cigarettes of an attachment snugly fitted onto the bottom end thereof and having a front portion provided with a shelf at the bottom thereof, said front portion having an opening above the shelf through which the cover strip of a book type package of matches may be inserted, the upper edge of said opening being bent outwardly to facilitate insertion of said strip, the upper part of said front portion providing an upwardly extending support, and a package of book type matches having the cover strip thereof inserted inwardly through said opening and brought upwardly over said support, the bottom of said package being seated on said shelf and the matches therein arranged in front of said support.

An attachment for cigarette packages comprising means for securing the attachment to one end of a package of cigarettes, means providing a shelf for supporting a package of book type matches on said attachment, a support for holding the back of the package of book type matches which is supported on said shelf against the face of a package of cigarettes, said attachment having an aperture below said support above said shelf whereby the cover strip of the package of book type matches may be inserted through said aperture and drawn upwardly about said support to bring the bottom of said match package onto said shelf and to bring the cover strip over the top of thesupport and downwardly about the matches which are to be arranged in front of said support.

An attachment for cigarette packages including means for securing the attachment to one end of. a package of cigarettes, and an upwardly extending support on said attachment, said attachment having an aperture therethrough beneath thesupport whereby the cover strip of apackage of book type matches may be inserted through said aperture and drawn upwardly about said support and downwardly over said matches which are arranged in front of the support, said support being adapted to hold the back of said package of matches against a face of a cigarette package to which the attachment is secured.

An attachment for cigarette containers including means for securing the attachment to a cigarette container, and means for holding a book type package of matches on the face of a container of cigarettes to which the attachment is secured, said means including an upwardly extending support for extending along a face of the container and having an aperture therein below the support whereby the cover strip of a book-type package of matches may be engaged about the support and held thereby against the face of the container, and a shelf below said aperture.

8. An attachment for cigarette containers including means for securing the attachment to a cigarette container, and means for holding a book typepackage of matches on the face of the" container to which the attachment is secured, said means including a support having a free end portion extending along a face of the container whereby the cover strip of. a book type package of matches may be, engaged about the support between the free end portion and the container to hold said package on said container.
