This invention relates to sash, door, or store front construction and is an improvement on the fulcrum construction set forth in my Patent 1,550,430, dated August 18, 1925.
While, in some respects, the present improvements embody the general fulcrum principle disclosed and claimed in my Patent 1,550,430, they also embody features not disclosed in said patent and which have practical advantages as to manufacture, installation, and adjustment.
The sash, door, or store front construction constituting the present improvements may be more economically manufactured, sold, installed and adjusted than can the construction of the aforesaid patent.
The present improvements entirely eliminate the necessity for providing holes in the front or outer moulding or section and the provision of adjusting screws which are exposed at the front moulding. The front or outer moulding of the present construction presents an unbroken appearance which greatly adds to the neat, artistic, and solid appearance of the outer part of the sash, door, or store front.
The present construction obtains the advantages of the fulcrum principle set forth in my aforesaid patent, without sacrificing appearance or causing any weakness at any point.
With the present improvements, different lengths of front and rear mouldings may be utilized; furthermore, if the face or outer moulding is imperfectly fitted, re-alignment may be readily had by re-connecting and re-fitting, and this advantage applies to corner intersections and longitudinal joints.
The present improvements provide a more compact and smaller glazing section with the adjust- .ing screws located at the rear of the pane in easily accessible position, which insures economy of manufacture and ease of setting the pane.
By the provision of improved clips and a novel arrangement of screws co-operating therewith, it is possible to obtain the appearance of heavy expensive, extruded sections, without providing heavy gauge extruded metal for the front and rear mouldings, this arrangement enabling relatively thin drawn or rolled mouldings to be em ployed at' less expense, as they mainly serve for appearance inasmuch as the heavier clips are relied upon to hold the pane. It will be understood, however, that the same general principle of invention is capable of being carried out in connection with heavy extruded mouldings or with relatively thin drawn or rolled mouldings and that this is made possible by the employment of relatively strong clips combined with the mouldings and with the screws, in a novel manner.
Other objects and purposes of the invention will appear more fully from the following description. It is to be understood that the invention is 5 susceptible of modification and while I have described and shown certain specific embodiments thereof, it is possible to embody the principle of the invention in other forms.

Description will first be given of an embodiment wherein the front and rear sections or mouldings are of drawn or rolled sheet metal on which reliance is not principally made for clamping the pane, as the improved relatively heavy or thick gauge clips are more particularly relied upon to clamp the pane. Thereafter, description will be given of an embodiment wherein the front and rear mouldings or sections are of heavy extruded metal combined in the same general manner with heavy clips and screws as in the embodiment employing drawn or rolled sheet moulding. In all embodiments, the principle of construction or setting, and tightening, is the same and so is that of the rocker or fulcrum.
In all embodiments shown and described, the front section is fulcrumed and is set and tensioned by screws but the means by which the fulcrum principle is employed, differ from those disclosed in my Patent 1,550,430, with resulting advantages.
In the embodiment shown in Figs. 1 to 6, the
front or outer moulding or section is shown at I and the rear or back moulding or section appears at 2. The mouldings or sections I and 2 are of rolled or drawn metal. Moulding I may have an exterior of the general bowed or angular crosssectional shape shown at I' but the exact contour in that respect may be varied. The lower part of moulding I is provided with a curved or rebent fulcrum inner edge 3 which is adapted to fulcrum or rock on the up-turned part 4 extending along the forward edge of the rear mouldi 2.
The upper part 5 of the front moulding I is of overhanging construction and has a depending lip 6 extending the length thereof just as do the parts 3 and 4.
The rear moulding or section 2 is provided with a gutter I and with a depending lip 8 which is adapted to bear on the rear face of the pane 9 in opposed arrangement to the depending lip 6 of section I which bears on the front or outer face of pane 9.
At intervals of the length of the mouldings I and 2, there are provided improved clips II] which co-operate with the fulcrum 3 and the lip 6. These clips III are of much thicker or heavier gauge than the drawn or rolled mouldings I and 2 and may be stamped or extruded. The tension of the adjusting screws I I, which are provided for rocking and tensioning the clips I0, is very largely taken by the clips so that, in this embodiment, it is not necessary for the rolled or drawn mouldings I and 2 to be of stout or strong metal.
Similarly, the reaction of the screws II is not principally taken by the back section or moulding 2 but by internal rear clips I2 constituting complementary members for the fulcruming clips Ill;
The rear clips I2 are of relatively heavy stamped or extruded metal and conform to the shape of the rear drawn or rolled moulding 2. The screws II engage screw threaded holes I3 in the rear clips I2. The forward ends of the rear clips I2 bear against the upturned lips or flanges 4 and the forward upper parts of said clips I2 bear against the lips 8.
If preferred, the upper ends of the clips I0 may be soldered to the upper part 5, B of the front moulding I but as the lower ends of the clips I0 are snugly received in the re-bent inner edge 3, it is not necessary to provide solder at this point, the crimping of the edge 3 holding the lower end of the clips.
Each front clip I0 is of the shape shown in Fig. 3, being provided with a single body designated I0 and two lower parts or feet I4 which, as previously described, are engaged with the fulcrum edge 3. The body I0 is continued and has a rearward tongue or extension I5 which has slots I6 in its opposite edges.
The tlp of the screw II bears on the rearward end of the tongue I5 so that by adjusting the screw, downward pressure exerted on tongue I5 will rock the fulcrum 3 on the bearing lip 4 and press the upper end of the clip I0 toward the pane 9, causing the lip 6 of the front moulding I to bear with any desired pressure on the pane.
The pane may be supported in any desired manner as, for instance, by inverted U-shaped metal supports I'I placed at intervals of the length of the moulding and resting on the, troughshaped bottom of the section 2 between the clips I2. These supports may be attached by solder to the inside of the front bearing lip or part 4.
The rear clips I2 at their forward part are provided with upwardly extending fulcrums I8 whose rear or inner surfaces are rounded in the arc of a circle whose center is the point where the rocker lip or edge 3 bears on the bearing lip 4 so that the edges I9 of the slots it are adapted to bear against the arc-shaped fulcrums I8 and thus co-ordinate with the fulcrum 3 during the rocking or swinging movements of the clips ID with the front moulding I. At the same time, inasmuch as the narrower part of the tongue I5 is located between the fulcrums I8, the moulding lo I and the clips III carried thereby are readily placed in position and set and adjusted without possibility of more than a limited relatively longitudinal shifting of moulding I in relation to 15 moulding 2.
The front or outer end of the rear clip I2 is anchored, against slipping lengthwise of mouldings I and 2, by the provision of an up-turned lip 20 which is engaged with the re-bent part of the bearing lip 4.- The screws II, by reason 20 of passing through the gutter I and the holes I3 in the rear clips I2, prevent the rear clips from shifting lengthwise of mouldings I and 2.
Referring now to Figs. 7, 8, 9, the invention is shown embodied in heavy extruded metal, the 25 same purpose as parts 4 and I8 of the embodi- 35 ment heretofore described.
The outer face of the part 24 is concaved to afford a bearing on which the lip 23 may fulcrum. The rear face of the part 24 is rounded at 25 to correspond with the rounded rear faces of the 40 parts I8. The curvature of the face 25 is such that it lies in the arc of a circle whose center is the-pivotal point for the fulcrum 23. The parts 23 and 24 extendthe full length of the sections 2I and 22. There are clips 26 corresponding to 45 the clips I0 and located at different points of the length of the section or moulding 2|. The clips 26, like the clips I0, may be thicker or heavier than the moulding 2I and they have their upper ends received in the part 21 of the 50 moulding 2I just as the upper ends of the clips I0 are received in the upper parts of the moulding I, and these upper ends bear against the lip 28 of the section 2|, said lip having a rounding contact face 29 which bears on the pane 9.
The pane 9 may be supported from the bottom of the section 22 by means I! such as previously described or by any suitable support to carry the weight of the pane. The clips 26 preferably fit the inner wall of the moulding 2I and the face of the fulcrum 23 so that said clips are firmly held to the section 2|.
Each clip 26 is provided with a tongue 30, which is connected by a narrower neck 3I to the clip.
The lip or bearing 24 is provided with a slot 32 6 which receives the neck 3I. The tongue 30 has shoulders 33 which are adapted to co-operate. with the arc-shaped inner face 25 of the lip 24. In
this construction, the fulcruming action at 23 70 30 and by adjusting said screw, the pane 9 may be v 7 held between the lip 28 on the front moulding 2i and the lip 35 on the rear moulding 22.
Referring to Fig. 10, in this embodiment, the tongues 36 are formed integral with the front section or moulding 31 instead of being separate pieces as in the two embodiments heretofore described but otherwise the same principle is employed. The fulcrum 38 rocks on the seat or bearing 39. The tongue 36 has a surface 40 which is adapted to rock on the arc-shaped surface 4| of the lip or head 42. A screw 43 which is threaded through the rear section 44, co-operates with the tongue 36. This construction is of heavy extruded metal.
In all embodiments of the invention, while the fulcrum princple set forth in Patent 1,550,430
' is employed, the adjustment is effected from the rear of the pane instead of from the front thereof and the front section or moulding is equipped with a tongue with which the screw co-operates. This arrangement entirely does away with the provision of holes and screws appearing at the front of the sash, door or store front construction and results in the advantages which have been enumerated. Furthermore, by the provision of tongues attached to, or integral with, the front moulding, an improved leverage action results from the co-operation of the screw with the tongue because the front lip on the rear section serves as a fulcrum hearing at its front and a contact bearing at its rear, to afford greater stability and improved tensioning effect, combined with an interlocking action which prevents relative displacement of the parts longitudinally of the mouldings.

In a sash, door, or store front construction, the combination with a rear section and a tensioning screw carried thereby, of a front section fulcrumed on the rear section and which is provided with a tongue located within the rear sec tion and is subject to the tensioning action of the screw, said rear section having a curved surface substantially lying in the arc of a circle whose center is substantially that of the fulcrum, and said tongue having a part adapted to bear on said curved surface to maintain the aforesaid fulcrum.
2. In a sash, door, or store front construction, the combination with a front pane-engaging section provided with a fulcrum, of a rear pane-engaging section having a seat or bearing for said fulcrum and provided with a lip having a slot, a clip carried by the front section and having a tongue extending through the aforesaid slot, said tongue being provided with a surface adapted to bear on the lip to maintain the fulcrum on its seat, and a tensioning screw carried by the rear section, said screw engaging the tongue.
3. In a sash, door or .store front construction, the combination of front and rear sections, one of which is fulcrumed to rock in relation to the other, a clip bodily carried by the fulcrumed section and provided with a tongue that projects toward the other section free from the wall thereof, combined fulcrum and retaining means on the tongue and other section adapted to interlock when engaged to maintain the fulcrumed relationship of the sections and also to prevent relative longitudinal displacement of said .sections, and a tightening screw adapted to co-operate with said tongue to rock said fulcrumed section on its fulcrum.
4. The combination of pane-holding sections, one of which is fulcrumed on a seat for movement in relation to the other section, one of said sections having a member projecting freely. there from, atightening screw carried by the other section which co-operates with said member, and means on said sections independent of the fulcrum and its seat co-operating to prevent displacement of the fulcrum.
5. The combination of pane-holdingsections, one of which is fulcrumed on a seat on the other section for movement in relation thereto, one of said sections having a member. projecting freely therefrom,- a tightening screw carriedby the other section which co-operates with said member, and means on .the said freely projecting member and on the other section independent of the fulcrum and its seatco-operating to prevent displacement of the fulcrum. v I

The combination of pane-holding sections, one of which isfulcrumed on a seat'on the other section for movement in relation to the other section, said fulcrumed section being provided with a member projecting freely therefrom, interlocking means on the said member and on the other section which prevent displacement of the fulcrum crosswise or lengthwise of the said sections, and a tightening screw which co-operates with the said member.
'7. The combination of pane-holding sections, one of which is fulcrumed on a seat on the other section for movement in relation to the other section, tightening means for said sections, and means for interlocking the sections to prevent displacement of the fulcrum, crosswise or lengthwise of the said sections, comprising a headed projection on one of said sections and a slotted member on the other section which receives the narrower part of the member in its slotted part and which co-operates with the headed part thereof.
8. The combination of pane-holding sections, one of which is fulcrumed on aseat for movement in relation to the other section, one of said sections having a member projecting freely therefrom, a tightening screw carried by the other section and engaged with said freely projecting member, and means independent of the fulcrum and partly on one section and partly on the other section, said means interlocking to prevent displacement of the fulcrum from said seat.
9. The combination of pane-holding sections fulcrumed on each other, one of which has a gutter with a guide opening therein, a clip attached to said section and co-operating with the other section, the other section being provided with a freely projecting tongue, and a pressure screw extending freely through the guide opening and threaded through the clip and having its tip engaging the aforcsaid tongue whereby pressure may be directly exerted by said screw on said tongue.
10. The combination of pane-holding sections fulcrumed on each other, one of which has a gutter with a guide opening therein, a'clip attached to said section and co-operating with the other section, the other section being provided with a freely projecting tongue, a pressure screw extending freely through the guide opening and threaded through the clip and having its tip engaging the aforesaid tongue, and interlocking means on said sections which prevents displacement of the fulcrum.
11. The combination of pane-holding sections, one of which carries a clip provided with a fulcrum seat, the other carrying a clip having a fulcrum engaging said seat and provided with a freely projecting tongue. said tongue being provided with means to engage the other section and interlock therewith to prevent the fulcrum from becoming displaced from its seat, and a tightening screw carried by the section having the fulcrum seat, said screw engaging the tongue.
12. The combination of pane-holding sections, one of which carries a clip provided with a fulcrum seat and the other section having a fulcrum engaging said' seat and having a projecting tongue, the first-mentioned section having a gutter, said gutter having a guide opening therein, and a tightening screw threaded through the clip and engaging the tongue, said screw having guiding relation to the opening in the gutter.
13. The combination of pane-holding sections, one which carries a clip provided with a fulcrum seat, and the other section having a fulcrum engaging said seat and having a projecting tongue,
the first-mentioned section having a gutter with an opening therein and spacedfrom the adjacent portion of the clip. and a tightening screw threaded through said adjacent portion of the clip and engagingthe tongue. said screw extending through the gutter opening and holding the clip against displacement.
14. The combination of pane-holding sections. one of which carries a clip and having lips receiving end portions of the clip preventing displacement of said clip, said clip having a fulcrum seat, and the other section having a fulcrum engaging said seat and having a projecting tongue, and a screw carried by the first-mentioned 16 section and engaging the tongue.
