automatic reel 29 is supported on the walls of theframe 20. Theautomatic reel 29 includes anaxle 27, acoil spring 12 and adrum 14. Theaxle 27 is non-rotationally supported on the walls of theframe 20. Thecoil spring 12 includes an internal end connected to theaxle 27 and an external end connected to thedrum 14. - Referring to
FIGS. 5 and 6 , the strap-damping unit 30 includes apressing element 31, atorque spring 39 and ashackle 40. Thepressing element 31 includes adisc 32, aneccentric boss 33 extending from a side of thedisc 32, anaxle 37 extending from an opposite side of thedisc 32, and tworods 34 extending from theaxle 37. Therods 34 are separated from each other by agap 35. Eachrod 34 includes ananchor 36 in the form of a mushroom that includes a neck and an enlarged head. Theanchor 36 preferably includes two halves separated from each other by a gap to increase the flexibility thereof. - The
torque spring 39 includes two rectilinear portions extending from a helical portion. - The
shackle 40 includes adisc 44, aneccentric boss 43 extending from a side of thedisc 44, anaxle 42 extending from an opposite side of thedisc 44, and twoapertures 41 defined in the 42 and 44.discs - The strap-
damping unit 30 is placed between themanual reel 24 and theautomatic reel 29. Theaxle 42 is placed in anaperture 38 defined in a wall of theframe 20. Theaxle 37 is placed in anaperture 38 defined in the other wall of theframe 20. The neck of eachanchor 36 is placed in arespective aperture 41 while the head is placed beyond thedisc 44. The helical portion of thetorque spring 39 is placed on one of therods 34. One of the rectilinear portions of thetorque spring 39 is placed against theframe 20 while the other rectilinear portion of thetorque spring 39 is inserted through thegap 35 and placed against therods 34. Therefore, therods 34 are biased by thetorque spring 39. - Before use, a first end of a short strap (not shown) is connected to the
crossbar 22 and a second end of the short strap is connected to a hook (not shown). Moreover, a first end of along strap 25 is connected to thedrum 14 and a second end of thelong strap 25 is connected to another hook (not shown). Thelong strap 25 includes an idle section wound on theautomatic reel 29 and an active section unwound from theautomatic reel 29 and inserted through thegap 35 and theslot 28. - Each hook is engaged with a portion of a truck for example. The idle section of the
long strap 25 is automatically wound by theautomatic reel 29. Thehandle 50 is pivoted on theframe 20 in an active direction so that the detent 52 engages with theratcheted wheels 51 to rotate themanual reel 24 to wind and tension thelong strap 25. Then, thehandle 50 is pivoted on theframe 20 in an opposite neutral direction so that thedetent 52 rattles on the ratchetedwheels 51 without rotating themanual reel 24 that would otherwise reel out and loosen thelong strap 25. Thehandle 50 is pivoted to and fro on theframe 20 to tension the active section of thelong strap 25. - Referring to
FIGS. 1 and 2 , the strap-dampingunit 30 is retained in a first position as therods 34 are biased by thetorque spring 39. Thelong strap 25 is pressed by therods 34, i.e., thelong strap 25 includes two portions in contact with therods 34. - Referring to
FIGS. 3 and 4 , the strap-dampingunit 30 is retained in a second position by operating thebosses 33 manually, against thetorque spring 39. Thelong strap 25 is pressed by therods 34, i.e., thelong strap 25 includes two portions in contact with therods 34. - The portions of the
long strap 25 in contact with therods 34 are larger as the strap-dampingunit 30 is in the first position than the second position. - Accordingly, the
long strap 25 encounters a larger damping force from the strap-dampingunit 30 in the first position than the second position. The strap-dampingunit 30 is placed in the first position when thecoil spring 12 starts winding thelong strap 25 onto thedrum 14 since thecoil spring 12 exerts large torque on thelong strap 25 via thedrum 14. The strap-dampingunit 30 is placed in the second position when thecoil spring 12 almost finishes winding thelong strap 25 onto thedrum 14 since thecoil spring 12 exerts small torque on thelong strap 25 via thedrum 14. By operating the strap-dampingunit 30 between the first and second positions, the rate of the winding of thelong strap 25 onto thedrum 14 is contained in a save range. - The present invention has been described via the detailed illustration of the preferred embodiment. Those skilled in the art can derive variations from the preferred embodiment without departing from the scope of the present invention. Therefore, the preferred embodiment shall not limit the scope of the present invention defined in the claims.
