Abstract
This invention is a simplification of existing traditional hookah pipe function and is a new design eliminating the need for four or more existing component parts by condensing the function of these multiple component parts down into two interlocking glass composite parts. This invention simplifies assembly and disassembly, and cleaning of the main hookah pipe by having fewer and more accessible parts. This invention seals at the base of the inside of the bowl section and at the top of the ground joint section of the water stem to prevent the leakage of tobacco, smoke or other contaminates from entering into the main hookah pipe from the bottom of the hookah bowl. This product also allows an all glass product to be used in place of traditional mixture of parts and components made of various materials. It requires no other materials other than glass to perform the functions of sealing in and sealing out, hookah tobacco, smoke, from unwanted areas and containing these items in their desired locations.
Description
- The present invention relates to a two piece fit together glass scientific hookah bowl and water stem system for holding and burning hookah tobacco.
- My invention, a “hookah bowl & stem system” uses borosilicate (oven/laboratory grade) glass and glass sealing ground joints to eliminate the need for multiple seals and multiple stems and grommets that are present on existing traditional hookah pipes. The water stem is inserted into the bowl section forming a complete functioning unit.
- This invention accomplishes its function with two parts. The first part is the bowl section. The bowl section consist of a bowl shaped glass top section fused together with a lower bowl section. This lower section consists of a inner female ground joint surrounded by and encase in a larger male ground joint. The inner female ground joint is a receptacle for the corresponding male ground joint located in the second part of the invention which is inserted into this inner ground joint providing an air and liquid tight seal. The outer larger male ground joint is inserted into a corresponding female ground joint located on the main hookah body providing a liquid and air tight seal between this part and the main hookah pipe.
- The second part is essentially a glass down tube with 3 different sections. The very top section of this part is a glass cone which forms part of the inner hookah bowl when inserted into the bowl section. This conical hollow top section extends upward towards the top of the bowl section and allows smoke to travel downward through the hollow center section of this piece and keeps hookah tobacco from falling into the main hookah pipe. The middle section is a tapered male ground joint that fits into the corresponding female inner ground joint in the previously described bowl part above, when inserted, providing an air and liquid tight seal. The bottom section is a hollow down tube that will extend into the water of the main hookah pipe, when in operation, allows smoke and air to travel through the length of this whole part and into the water.
- The device is comprised of the following:

- The
overall invention 10 is a device designed to allow a human person to use a hookah pipe to smoke hookah tobacco. It allows the user a place or bowl in which to put hookah tobacco, so that it may be smoked through a hookah pipe, smoking device or apparatus. Its function is to combine the many bowl, grommets and stem parts of a hookah pipe or smoking device into a compact two piece unit. This system comes in two parts or assemblies, the Bowl Assembly 12 and Stem Assembly 14. When StemAssembly 14 is inserted and seated in Bowl Assembly 12 they form the completeoverall invention 10 such as inFIG. 1 . This system has a hollow core to allow an air/smoke mixture to pass its length and enter into the hookah pipe. This system may be made of any hard material that can be machine or formed, preferably borosilicate glass, including but not limited to any type of glass product, wood metal and plastic. - All of the elements of this design are essential to complete the entire unit. Elements could be resized and adapted to different sized hookah pipes or smoking apparatus to accommodate different sizes of main pipes or to hold more or less hookah tobacco. This resizing would not change the function or how the invention was put together
- It is the arrangement of the parts that is essential to making this invention work and interlock the way it does. If the parts were arranged in a different way then they would not fit together and the Bowl Assembly 12 and the Stem Assembly 14 would not be synergistic and integral to each other.
- The entire overall invention 1 is composed of two assemblies. Bowl Assembly 12 and Stem Assembly 14. Stem Assembly 14 is designed to fit into Bowl Assembly 12 to form a complete unit. When these two assemblies are joined they compromise the complete components which allow tobacco storage, combustion and smoke delivery to the main hookah, see
FIG. 1 . There is only one way to insert the Bowl Assembly 12 into the Stem Assembly 14 to from a completed unit. The fusing of these individual parts could come form any bonding agent or buy melting parts or forming materials in any way to form a composite part consisting of these elements in this specific alignment or arrangement with each other. This order of arrangement of components and parts are what give this system its simplicity and ease of assembly and disassembly. - The Bowl Assembly 12 is the upper section of this unit and has three main parts, Bowl
Upper Section 16, Bowl InnerFemale Ground Joint 18 and Bowl Outer Male GroundJoint 20 which are fused together to form one part Bowl Assembly 12. - The Bowl Upper
Section 16 is designed to hold tobacco when Stem Assembly 14 is inserted into Bowl Inner FemaleGround Joint 18 which is joined to the base of this part. Bowl UpperSection 16 may vary in size and dimension to accommodate a larger or smaller hookah pipe, allow more or less airflow or more or less tobacco capacity. - The Bowl Inner Female
Ground Joint 18 will accommodate the insertion of theStem assembly 14. This part is fused at the base of Bowl UpperSection 16 and is encased in and fused with Bowl Outer MaleGround Joint 20. It is a circular hollow female scientific ground joint with an inner machined ground surface designed to mate with a corresponding male ground joint in StemMale Ground Joint 24 to form a air and liquid tight seal. - The overall invention 1 works by inserting the
Stem Assembly 14 into theBowl Assembly 12 to form one complete unit and system. Once the two components are joined together this device is ready to be used. Tobacco or any other combustible smoking material can then be placed inBowl Upper Section 16 up to the top of the bowl. The tapered ground joint system in the base of the bowl which is the Bowl InnerFemale Ground Joint 18 and StemMale Ground Joint 24 prevent any leakage of materials out of the bottom of the bowl section. TheStem Upper Extension 22 keeps the smoking material from falling down through the center of the Bowl Upper Section 4 and allows smoke to be drawn down throughbottom stem hole 32 smoke diffusion holes 30. - Once the
Bowl Assembly 12 and theStem Assembly 14 are combined thenoverall invention 10 can then be placed onto the main hookah pipe or smoking apparatus by inserting the tapered Bowl OuterMale Ground Joint 20 into the corresponding female ground joint on the main hookah pipe. This joining provides an air and liquid tight seal that is necessary for the completed hookah or smoking unit to work. - Once the
Bowl Upper Section 16 is lighted from above with a combustion source, by either fire, flame or heated coal, or other combustion source then the smoking material is combusted and turned into smoke or smoke vapor. The vacuuming action of a person or device drawing air through the main smoking pipe or hookah will draw the combusted smoke down throughStem Assembly 14 via topstem air hole 28. This smoke air mixture will be introduced into the water of the main hookah through the Smoke Diffusion Holes 30 orBottom Stem Hole 32 or any combination of the afore mentioned holes. - Once the smoking or combustible material us used you can reverse the assembly process to separate the
Bowl Assembly 12 and theStem Assembly 14 to facilitate cleaning and storage. - If made of glass the person would need knowledge and experience of how to cut, fuse, blow and shape glass parts together to make each element. The ground glass joints could be purchased directly but would need to be heated and fused to the other components to make the competed assembly part. This would require some specialized training and experience with glass blowing and specialized lampworking equipment. Other materials would require the expertise in the material medium that would allow these different components to be put together in the same precise way to achieve the same function as in the glass product. They could be made by precision forms or by other precise instruments capable of achieving the same dimensions and seals as that the glass product would provide.
- The components could be arranged in a different way to create a similar device that could perform the same function, however this device would not interlock in the same fashion as this invention. The
Bowl Assembly 12 could sit on top of a stem assembly scientific ground joint but it would not be integral to the and part of the bowl assembly which would hold the tobacco or smoking substance but rather be 2 separate pieces with two separate functions not related to or integral to each other. This relationship between parts would be similar to the existing traditional hooking systems previously mentioned with each part providing a separate function. - This invention would be used for smoking tobacco, hookah tobacco, herbs or any other smoking material.
- The person using this invention would need to follow the following steps.
-
- 1. They would take the
Stem Assembly 14 and insert the long roundStem Down Tube 26 end through the center hole in middle ofBowl Assembly 12, stopping only when Stem Male ground joint 20 is fully inserted into Bowl Inner Female Ground joint 18. - 2. You could now take this completed part and insert it via the Bowl Outer Male Ground joint 20 into the corresponding female ground joint on the main hookah pipe or smoking apparatus.
- 3. The
Bowl Upper Section 16 could then be filled with smoking tobacco or other smoking substance. - 4. To clean and remove after use you would reverse this process by sliding the
Stem Assembly 14 by pushing from the bottomStem Down Tube 26 and disengaging the StemMale Ground Joint 24 from the Bowl InnerFemale Ground Joint 18 thus separating the two assemblies. TheBowl Assembly 12 and theStem Assembly 14 could then be cleaned and stored separately.
- 1. They would take the
- This device could be used with any device which with a person or machine would burn material or generate smoke. It could be used with any smoking material or type or style of smoking apparatus regardless of the type of material that is burned.
- The invention also could be used by any machine or person that needed to combust a material that would need to be processed in a similar fashion.
- The traditional current hookah system relies on fitting many components together to achieve a single function. This traditional configuration is more complex and requires each part to fit together to form an integrated air tight unit which lessens the operational reliability of the hookah. It is more difficult assemble, disassemble, and clean and sanitize. It uses non durable dissimilar components such as rubber metal glass and clay to achieve an air tight system. These non durable components are which are subject to failure and decay during normal use and could possibly contribute material contaminates into the smoking process.
