Abstract
Pillowhead is a pillow constructed so that he can easily be worn on the head securely, allowing the wearer to comfortably rest their head and sleep in any position. It is ideal for travel, and uniquely shaped to cradle the head, contrary to current travel pillows, which only address neck, support or are just miniature pillows that unattached can move or lose contact while trying to rest the head.
Description
- Pillowhead is a wrap around pillow that you wear on your head like a pillow helmet that allows you to rest or sleep comfortably anywhere. It is made of a soft stretchable cotton/spandex or flannel blend material, and standard pillow filler. It is sewn ad held together at the top with a flat cloth cap, and a Velcro chinstrap to secure it below. It is compact, and particularly handy and practical for traveling on planes, trains, or in cars. Also, may be used for nighttime sleep or anytime, anywhere naps. An additional benefit is that it muffles noise.
- The idea for pillowhead was originally conceived while traveling cross country on a flight from Los Angeles to Boston in August 2006. I obtained a provisional patent U.S. 60/861,567, filing date Nov. 30, 2006 Applicant: Nicholas Peter Zappas, title of invention: Pillowhead.
- Pillowhead is a simply sublime designed pillow that you can securely and comfortably wear wrapped around your head, allowing you to sleep in any position. It is especially valuable for travel in cars, trains, buses, and planes. It also provides, because of its wrap around padding, a nice noise buffer and warmth, allowing improved slumber. I can also be considered decorative and worn as a hat that provides slight protection from bumping parts of your head.

FIG. 1 ) Materials: slightly stretchy fabric (cotton/spandex blend) approximately 24″ by 32″, (with additional smaller pieces of fabric approximately 7″ 9″ and 3″ by 8″ to form top cap and chin securing strap respectively), pillow fiber filler and Velcro patches -
FIG. 2 ) Pillow fiber evenly distributed into fabric, now folded and sewn so two long ends meet, to form rectangular shaped pillow -
FIG. 3 ) Top cap fabric sewn midway onto long edge of pillow, and an additional securing strap of fabric sewn to short side of pillow on opposite edge of top cap fabric -
FIG. 4 ) Top cap sewn to two sides of long edge of pillow to form a C-shaped pillow as viewed inferiorly -
FIG. 5 ) Superior view of Pillowhead showing top cap in place and securing strap -
FIG. 6 ) Lateral view of Pillowhead showing attached Velcro patches and medial side of securing strap also with Velcro patches -
FIG. 7 ) Frontal view of completed C-shaped Pillowhead showing securing strap and top cap -
FIG. 8 ) Pillowhead being worn with securing strap across chin area attached by Velcro patches to provide a comfortable and secure pillow around head - Pillowhead is made by using a soft, slightly stretchy fabric typically 94% cotton 6% spandex and soft polyester pillow fiber filler. Other fabrics that can be used include silk, cotton flannel, polyester-cotton blend and acrylic-cotton blend. Additional fillers include down and down alternative. The largest piece of material measures approximately 24″ by 32″ (
FIG. 1 ). The fiber filler is placed evenly over half the large piece of fabric. The fabric is then fold over so two long ends meet, and sewn together on the three sides to give a pillow approximately 12″ by 32″ (FIG. 2 ). This new sewn pillow piece is the formed into a C shape that would fit around a head. Another piece of cotton/spandex in a half elliptical shape measuring 7.5″ at the wide base and 10.5″ in height is sewn to the top (the sewn edge) of the C shaped pillow (A rectangular piece of cloth could also be used, minus the rounded edge portion). This piece of fabric may also be made from nylon mesh or stretchy nylon fabric. This forms the cap or top of the pillowhead (FIGS. 3 & 4 ). A strip of cotton/spandex cloth 2″ wide by 6″ is sewn to one side of the anterior lower base of the open end of the C shaped pillow (FIG. 5 ). This forms the chinstrap portion of the pillowhead. The unsewn end of the strap and the opposing side of the open end of the pillow base are affixed with Velcro patches (1″×1″ squares) to secure the pillowhead at the base. The pillow portion has several Velcro squares to adjust pillowhead securing accordingly for comfort (FIG. 6 ). The final product fits comfortably and securely around head (FIGS. 7 & 8 ).
