- the present invention generally relates to an apparatus and method for cleaning baseboards in residences and commercial buildings. More particularly, the invention relates to a baseboard cleaner that will not damage the baseboard and that may be operated without extensive bending or stooping.
- Baseboards along the bottom edge of walls are customarily cleaned by a broom or by hand. Cleaning a baseboard with a broom may scratch the baseboard. Hand cleaning by an individual may require bending, stooping, and/or kneeling for prolonged periods. Such activities may cause discomfort or injury (e.g., back injury) to the individual performing the cleaning operation.
- U.S. Pat. No. 3,042,952 to Bradley which is incorporated by reference as if fully set forth herein, describes a baseboard duster and applicator having a pair of parallel upright plates spaced apart by one or more supporting members. A pair of rollers is included between the plates. A pad is secured to one or both exterior surfaces of the plates for dusting or applying wax or oil to the baseboard. Abstract
A device for cleaning trim of a room includes a head and a handle. The head includes at least one first cleaning portion that can clean a first surface of the trim by moving the head in a lengthwise direction of the trim and at least one second cleaning portion that can clean a second surface of the trim by moving the head lengthwise direction of the trim, the second surface being above the first surface and not co-planar with the first surface. The head includes a removable cover. At least part of the first cleaning portion and at least part of the second cleaning portion are formed in the removable cover.
Description
- This application is a continuation-in-part of U.S. patent application Ser. No. 10/715,134 filed on Nov. 17, 2003, entitled “BASEBOARD CLEANING APPARATUS AND METHOD”, which claims priority to U.S. Provisional Patent Application Ser. No. 60/426,856 filed on Nov. 15, 2002, entitled “BASEBOARD CLEANING APPARATUS AND METHOD”, the disclosures of both of which are hereby incorporated by reference.
- 1. Field of the Invention
- The present invention generally relates to an apparatus and method for cleaning baseboards in residences and commercial buildings. More particularly, the invention relates to a baseboard cleaner that will not damage the baseboard and that may be operated without extensive bending or stooping.
- 2. Description of Related Art
- Baseboards along the bottom edge of walls are customarily cleaned by a broom or by hand. Cleaning a baseboard with a broom may scratch the baseboard. Hand cleaning by an individual may require bending, stooping, and/or kneeling for prolonged periods. Such activities may cause discomfort or injury (e.g., back injury) to the individual performing the cleaning operation.
- Some devices are known for cleaning baseboards. U.S. Pat. No. 3,042,952 to Bradley, which is incorporated by reference as if fully set forth herein, describes a baseboard duster and applicator having a pair of parallel upright plates spaced apart by one or more supporting members. A pair of rollers is included between the plates. A pad is secured to one or both exterior surfaces of the plates for dusting or applying wax or oil to the baseboard. A handle is pivotally coupled between the plates. The handle may be rotated to alternately position the pads on either side of the apparatus for contact with the baseboard.
- U.S. Pat. No. 3,339,220 to Barry, which is incorporated by reference as if fully set forth herein, describes a device for cleaning corner surfaces. The device includes a right-angled scrubber head attached to a straight elongated handle. The device is adapted for simultaneously cleaning intersecting surfaces such as the adjoining areas of a baseboard and a floor.
- U.S. Pat. No. 3,713,744 to Sims, which is incorporated by reference as if fully set forth herein, describes a combination cleaner, polisher and waxing device for walls and floors. The device includes an elongated handle having a pad carrier pivotally connected to the handle. One side margin of the carrier is weighted so that the carrier tends to a vertical position for wall cleaning when held spaced above a floor.
- Many currently available cleaning devices do not provide multiple cleaning pads adapted to perform multiple cleaning steps, such as wetting and drying, in a single operation. In addition, many currently available cleaning devices do not provide a handle that is adapted for comfortable gripping and ease of operation. Many currently available devices do not allow for adjustment of pads to clean baseboards of various heights and widths. It is desirable to have a baseboard cleaner that is adapted to perform multiple cleaning steps in a single operation, that can be comfortably and easily operated by a user, and with pads that may be adjusted for cleaning baseboards of various dimensions.
- In an embodiment, an apparatus for cleaning a baseboard of a wall may include pads and a handle coupled to the pads. The front surfaces of the pads may be configured to contact adjoining sections of the baseboard during use. In certain embodiments, one of the pads may be a sponge and another pad may be a dry cloth. A liquid dispenser such as a water bottle may be coupled to the sponge to wet the sponge during use. In another embodiment, one pad may be a dust cloth that is adapted to collect dust, and another pad may be a polishing cloth. One or more of the pads may be removable, reversible, washable, and/or replaceable.
- In an embodiment, an apparatus for cleaning a baseboard of a wall may include one or more rollers. A portion of a handle may be angled to extend away from the wall and rearward from one or more of the pads during use. The handle may include a grip end portion that is angled with respect to an adjoining portion of the handle for the comfort of a user.
- In an embodiment, a length of a handle of an apparatus may be adjustable for use by users of various heights. In some embodiments, a middle portion of a handle may be rotatably coupled to a base portion so that the middle portion of the handle can be adjusted during use or storage of the apparatus.
- In an embodiment, an apparatus for cleaning a baseboard may include one or more top pads for cleaning a top face of a baseboard. The top pads may be adjustable to facilitate cleaning of baseboards of various dimensions. In some embodiments, top pads may be vertically adjustable relative to the holder. A user may vertically adjust the top pads of the apparatus to facilitate cleaning of baseboards of various heights. In other embodiments, top pads may be horizontally adjustable relative to a holder. A user may horizontally adjust the top pads to facilitate cleaning of baseboards of various thicknesses.
- In an embodiment, a device for cleaning trim of a room includes a head and a handle. The head includes at least one first cleaning portion that can clean a first surface of the trim by moving the head in a lengthwise direction of the trim and at least one second cleaning portion that can clean a second surface of the trim by moving the head lengthwise direction of the trim, the second surface being above the first surface and not co-planar with the first surface. The head includes a removable cover. At least part of the first cleaning portion and at least part of the second cleaning portion are formed in the removable cover.
- In an embodiment, a device for cleaning trim in a room includes a head with a removable cover. The head includes at least one front cleaning portion that can clean a front surface of the trim by moving the head in a lengthwise direction of the trim. The head includes a leading cleaning portion proximate to a leading end of the head and a trailing cleaning portion proximate to a trailing end of the head.
- In an embodiment, a method of cleaning trim at a corner of a room where a first section of trim on a first wall meets a second section of trim on a second wall includes moving a front cleaning portion of a cleaning device lengthwise across the first section of trim; moving a leading cleaning portion of the cleaning device across the second section of trim proximate to the corner; and moving a trailing cleaning portion of the cleaning device across the first section proximate to the corner.
- In an embodiment, a head for a device for cleaning trim in a room includes at least one first cleaning portion that can clean a first surface of the trim by moving the head in a lengthwise direction of the trim and at least one second cleaning portion that can clean a second surface of the trim by moving the head lengthwise direction of the trim. At least one of the first cleaning portions is formed as a unitary member with at least one of the second cleaning portions.

- Referring to the drawings, an apparatus for cleaning a baseboard is designated generally as 10.
FIGS. 1-4 show apparatus 10 including 20, 22.pads 20, 22 may be installed onPads 24, 26. In an embodiment,pad holders pad 20 may be a sponge andpad 22 may be a dry cloth. 24, 26 may be coupled to handle 28.Pad holders - In use, front surfaces 30, 32 of
20, 22, respectively (shown inpads FIG. 4 ), may be positioned to contactfront face 34 ofbaseboard 36.Baseboard 36 may be attached at a junction ofwall 38 andfloor 40. Front surfaces 30, 32 of 20, 22 may be configured to contact adjoining surfaces ofpads baseboard 36 so that a user may apply 20, 22 sequentially along a given section ofpads baseboard 36. For example, front surfaces 30, 32 may be substantially in line such that front surfaces 30, 32 lie in a common plane and are positioned along a common longitudinal axis in direction F ofFIG. 1 . In one embodiment, adjacent edges of 20 and 22 may be positioned so that there is no gap between the edges of the pads. In another embodiment,pads 20 and 22 may be spaced from each other so that there is a gap between the edges of the pads.pads -
Handle 28 may includebase portion 42,middle portion 44, andgrip end portion 46.Base portion 42 may be substantially parallel to thebaseboard 36 during use.Middle portion 44 may be angled upwardly with respect tobase portion 42 so that a user may reachgrip end portion 46 ofhandle 28 without stooping.Middle portion 44 may be angled outwardly with respect to 30, 32 so thatfront surfaces grip end portion 46 is positioned away fromwall 38 during use. - In an embodiment,
grip end portion 46 may be angled with respect tomiddle portion 44. The angle may be chosen such that the handle is comfortable for a user. For example,grip end portion 46 may be angled frommiddle portion 44 so that a longitudinal axis ofgrip end portion 46 is about 15 degrees out of a vertical plane parallel to wall 38, and about 45 degrees out of a vertical plane perpendicular towall 38. - In some embodiments, handle 28 may be adjustable. For example, a telescoping feature may be provided on
middle portion 44 so that the overall length ofhandle 28 is adjustable. Threadedadjustment ring 45 may be provided onmiddle portion 44 to allow a user to control the extension of an upper section ofmiddle portion 44 relative to a lower section ofmiddle portion 44. As another example, a pivot or ball joint 47 may be used to couplemiddle portion 44 andbase portion 42. Ball joint 47 may include a locking element for fixing an angle betweenmiddle portion 44 andbase portion 42 during use. Such locking elements may include, but are not limited to, a latch, a screw, a pin, a detent mechanism, and/or a clip. Similar coupling and/or locking features may be provided betweenmiddle portion 44 andgrip end portion 46. In an embodiment, frictional engagement at ball joint 47 may inhibit handle 28 from dropping to the floor even if a user releases the handle. In certain embodiments, a junction between a handle and a head of a cleaning device may be double hinge joint. For example, in one embodiment, the junction between and head and handle may include with two interconnected joints having axes of rotation extending in planes disposed normally with respect to one another. - Features allowing adjustment of a handle may facilitate use of the apparatus by users of various heights. Features allowing adjustment of a handle may make the apparatus easier to operate, transport, or store. For example, a user may be able to increase an angle between
middle portion 44 andbase portion 42 to an angle that approaches 180 degrees. Such an angle may allow a user to operate the apparatus underneath obstructions, such as furniture or office equipment. - In an embodiment,
apparatus 10 may includerollers 48.Rollers 48 may be configured to roll onfloor 40 to facilitate travel of 20, 22 along a length ofpads baseboard 36.Rollers 48 may facilitate guiding of the apparatus around corners.Rollers 48 may be any of various forms known to those skilled in the art, including, but not limited to, wheels, bearings, cylinders, or discs. In one embodiment, as shown inFIG. 2 ,rollers 48 may be wheels mounted to roller mounts 50 onaxles 52. In other embodiments,rollers 48 may be mounted to pad 24, 26 or handle 28.holders Stop 54 may be provided to inhibit damage to a wall, baseboard, or other surface, such as banging or scratching, caused by contact withapparatus 10.Stop 54 may be formed of a resilient material (e.g., rubber). - In one embodiment,
apparatus 10 may includeliquid dispenser 56.Liquid dispenser 56 may be coupled to handle 28.Liquid dispenser 56 may be configured to provide a liquid to pad 20 (e.g., a sponge) through inlet 57 (shown inFIG. 4 ). The liquid may include, but is not limited to, water, a cleaning solution, oil, and/or wax.Liquid dispenser 56 may be coupled to pad 20 bytube 58. In an embodiment,liquid dispenser 56 may be a squeezable bottle. In another embodiment, as depicted inFIG. 2 ,liquid dispenser 56 may include a container coupled to pump 60 bytubing 62.Pump 60 may be adapted to pressurize a liquid in the container.Pump 60 may be a manual pump, operated by squeezinglever 64 againstgrip end portion 46. -

In an embodiment, 24, 26 may be combined into a single member.pad holders - In an embodiment, a pad in a forward position of an apparatus may include a leading portion whose face is at an angle with respect to the rest of the pad.
FIG. 5 shows leading portion 20′ ofpad 20. In another embodiment, leadingportion 20′ may be a separate pad frompad 20.Forward pad holder 66 may be provided to support leadingportion 20′. In some embodiments,forward pad holder 66 may be integrated with or fixedly coupled to padholder 24. The angle betweenforward pad holder 66 andpad holder 24 may be about 90 degrees. In other embodiments,forward pad holder 66 may be pivotally coupled to pad holder 24 (e.g., with a pin). - In some embodiments,
rollers 48 may be configured to float horizontally relative to pad 24, 26. Horizontal float inholders rollers 48 may allow 80, 82 to contactlip pads top face 78 ofbaseboard 36 when therollers 48 are in contact withfloor 40, even when variations are encountered in a height ofbaseboard 36. In one embodiment,axles 52 may be spring-loaded to urgerollers 48 into contact withfloor 40. -
20, 22 andPads 80, 82 may be any of various cleaning materials known to those skilled in the art. For example, one or more oflip pads 20, 22 andpads 80, 82 may be of nylon wool. In one embodiment,lip pads pad 20 may be a sponge andpad 22 may be a dry cloth. In another embodiment,pad 20 may be a dust cloth that is adapted to collect dust, andpad 22 may be polishing pad. 20, 22 andPads 80, 82 may be removable fromlip pads apparatus 10, replaceable, and washable. 20, 22 andPads 80, 82 may be reversible so that a user can invert a pad during use and continuing cleaning without having to wash the pad. Utilization of removable, replaceable, washable, and/or reversible pads may make use oflip pads apparatus 10 more cost effective. In some embodiments, 20, 22 andpads 80, 82 may include backing members to provide structural reinforcement to the cleaning surfaces during use, removal, installation, and washing of the pads.lip pads -
Handle 28 may include any of various materials known to those skilled in the art, including, but not limited to, plastic, metal, and/or wood. In an embodiment, handle 28 may include hollow metal tubing. For example, handle 28 may include hollow aluminum tubing with a circular cross section. The tubing may be bent to form various portions ofhandle 28 using methods known to those skilled in the art. As depicted inFIG. 1 , handle 28 may includegrip cover 90.Grip cover 90 may be made of rubber or other resilient material that enhances comfort or adherence to gripend portion 46. In certain embodiments, handle 28 may have a hole for hanging a cleaning device on a nail. -
Handle 28 may be coupled to pad 24, 26 by various methods known to those skilled in the art. In an embodiment,holders 24, 26 are coupled to handle 28 using common fasteners including, but not limited to, bolts, screws, and/or rivets. In some embodiments,pad holders 24, 26 may be coupled to a tube section ofpad holders handle 28 using a loop-type cushioned clamp. In still another embodiment, 24, 26 may include through holes adapted to allow a section ofpad holders handle 28 to pass through the holes. A keying feature, such as are known to those skilled in the art, may be provided on the mating elements to ensure that 20, 22 remain properly aligned (e.g., do not rotate around the base portion of handle 28) during use.pads - During use, a user may configure
apparatus 10 to include a sponge aspad 20 and a dry cloth aspad 22. The user may positionapparatus 10 so that 30, 32front surfaces contact baseboard 36. Front surfaces 30, 32 may each contact an adjoining section ofbaseboard 36.Lever 64 may be depressed to operatepump 60 forliquid dispenser 56, in turn causing the sponge to be wetted. Water in the sponge may contactfront face 34 ofbaseboard 36. The user may graspgrip end portion 46 ofhandle 28 andpush apparatus 10 forward in the direction of arrow F ofFIG. 1 .Rollers 48 may help a user to maintain 20, 22 in contact withpads front face 34 ofbaseboard 36. Thus, for example, the sponge (pad 20) may wet and clean a portion ofbaseboard 36. Thereafter, as the user continues to move the apparatus forward, dry cloth (pad 22) may further clean and dry the portion ofbaseboard 36. Drying ofbaseboard 36 immediately after wet washing may inhibit streaking ofbaseboard 36. Simultaneously, 80, 82 may cleanpads top face 78 ofbaseboard 36. Thus,apparatus 10 may remove dust, stains, and other materials fromfront face 34 andtop face 78 ofbaseboard 36. - In some embodiments, a forward pad that includes a leading portion may be used to clean an interior corner of a room where two baseboards meet. Referring again to
FIG. 5 , a user may operate the apparatus along afirst baseboard 102. When the apparatus reachescorner 104, the leadingportion 20′ may abutsecond baseboard 106. A user may move the apparatus so that leadingportion 20′ cleanssecond baseboard 106 nearcorner 104. The remainder ofpad 20 may cleanfirst baseboard 102 nearcorner 104. - In another embodiment, a pair of pad holders may be coupled by an interconnecting member to a handle at a location between the two pad holders.
FIG. 6 depictsapparatus 10′ including 24, 26, each coupled to one end of interconnectingpad holders member 108.Handle 28 may be coupled to interconnectingmember 108 at pivot joint 110. In an embodiment, pivot joint 110 may allow rotation ofhandle 28 about an axis perpendicular to face 112 of interconnectingmember 108. An angle betweenhandle 28 and a plane of a wall may remain substantially constant as the handle pivots about the axis. In another embodiment, pivoting joint 110 may include a ball joint that allows rotation about an unlimited number of axes.Apparatus 10′ may be operated along a baseboard to clean the baseboard. Reaction forces of the baseboard against 24, 26 may completely or partially balance each other during use to inhibit rotation of pads away from the baseboard.pad holders - In an embodiment, pump 60′ may be activated by
trigger 114. Operation oftrigger 114 may pump a fluid fromliquid dispenser 56 throughtube 58A, pump 60, andtube 58B toport 57.Port 57 may be located at the top ofholder 24. Distribution of the fluid inpad 20 fromport 57 may be promoted by gravity. - In an embodiment, pads for cleaning a top face of a baseboard may be adjustable to facilitate cleaning of baseboards of various heights.
FIGS. 7A and 7B depictpad holder 24′ coupled to 20, 22.pads FIG. 7C depicts a cross-sectional view ofpad holder 24′ taken substantially along 7C-7C ofFIG. 7A .Pad holder 24′ may be coupled to pivoting joint 110 by threadingnut 118 onto threadedpost 120.Wheels 48 may be coupled to padholder 24′ ataxles 52.Top pad holder 116 may be coupled to padholder 24′ usingfastener 122.Top pad holder 116 may run along guides 124 ofpad holder 24′. In an embodiment,fastener 122 may include a thumbscrew. A user may loosenfastener 122 so that the user may slidefastener 122 up or down slot 126 (as indicated by arrows V) until 125, 127 are at a desired height relative to the bottom oftop pads pad holder 24′. The desired height may be approximately equal to a height of a baseboard to be cleaned. A user may tightenfastener 122 to locktop pad holder 116 at the desired height. Fluid may be introduced intopad 20 throughfluid port 57. -
Top pad holders 116 may be removed and replaced. In an embodiment, a user may be provided with a set oftop pad holders 116 of various widths 125, 127 may be preinstalled on each top pad holder. A user may select a top pad holder that is a suitable width for a baseboard to be cleaned.W. Top pads - In some embodiments, guards may be provided to protect surfaces of baseboards, walls, or floors from mechanical damage (e.g., scratching, marring, or puncturing) or exposure to fluids by a cleaning apparatus.
FIGS. 7B and 7C depictguard 128 on the side oftop pad holder 116.FIGS. 7A and 7C depictguards 129 at the bottom of 20, 22.pads 128 and 129 may be formed of a soft material including, but not limited to, plastic and/or rubber.Guards Guard 128 may inhibit scratching of a wall during use of the apparatus.Guard 129 may inhibit fluids from seeping onto a carpet or other floor covering during use of the apparatus. - In an embodiment, top pads may be adjustable in both vertical and horizontal directions.
FIGS. 8A and 8B depictpad holder 24′ coupled to adjustabletop pad holder 116.FIG. 8C depicts a cross-sectional view taken substantially along 8C-8C ofFIG. 8A .Top pad holder 116 may be coupled toholder 24′ usingcaptive fastener 130.Captive fastener 130 may threadably engagetop pad holder 116.Captive fastener 130 may rotate withincollar 132.Ring 134 may retaincaptive fastener 130 oncollar 132. Ascaptive fastener 130 is turned, a spacing betweentop pad holder 116 andpad holder 24′ may be increased or decreased to movetop pad holder 116 horizontally (as indicated by arrows H). Adjusting the spacing betweentop pad holder 116 andpad holder 24′ may facilitate cleaning baseboards of differing thicknesses. -
Collar 132 may slide vertically in a slot inpad holder 24′.Top pad holder 116 may include detent mechanism 138. Detent mechanism 138 may includepin 140.Pin 140 may be resiliently urged byspring 144 against one ofdepressions 142 inpad holder 24′. A user may adjust a height of 125, 127 relative to a floor by grippingtop pads captive fastener 130 and movingcaptive fastener 130 up or down untilpin 140 engages one ofdepressions 142. Engagement ofpin 140 in a depression may keep 125, 127 at a desired height during use.top pads - Cleaning devices may be used to clean trim of a room. As used herein, “trim” includes any elongated element, such as a board, bar, or plate, or a combination of such elements, attached on a wall, ceiling, or floor. Examples of trim include baseboards, chair rail, and crown molding.

FIG. 9 depicts a head of a cleaning device including a removable cover according to one embodiment.FIG. 10 is a front view of the cleaning device shown inFIG. 9 .Cleaning device 200 includeshandle 201 andhead 202.Head 202 includesholder 203,pad 204,pad 206,rollers 208, andremovable cover 210. In certain embodiments,pad 204 is a wet pad andpad 206 is a dry pad. InFIG. 9 , only the distal end ofhandle 201 is shown for clarity. The handle and associated parts ofhandle 201 may be similar to those shown inFIGS. 1-8 . -
Removable cover 210 includes openings to accommodate or cooperate with various elements of the cleaning device, such aswheels 208, handle 201, and fluid delivery elements (e.g., afluid line 217 to pad 204).Removable cover 210 may be at least partially open on the bottom. For example, cover 210 includesbottom opening 219 shown inFIG. 11 . Openings on a bottom of a cover may provide clearance for rollers (e.g. rollers 208) to remain in contact with the floor during use. - In some embodiments, a removable cover is made of a pile material. As used herein, “pile material” includes any material with fibers, filaments, yarns, or the like, that stand up from a backing or base fabric. Pile materials may be in the form of a cloth, a fabric, or a sheet. In one embodiment, a pile material is a soft material such as terry cloth. A pile material may include loops that are cut or uncut. The fibers, filaments, or yarns of a pile material may be perpendicular or non-perpendicular to the backing or base fabric.
- Referring to
FIG. 10 ,removable cover 210 includes 220 and 222.barrier elements 220 and 222 may block or inhibit water from moving from one portion of a cleaning device to another. In one embodiment,Barrier elements barrier element 220 inhibits liquid from dripping out the bottom ofhead 202. In one embodiment,barrier element 222 keeps liquid from seeping from the portion ofremovable cover 210 over pad 204 (which may be used for wetting trim) to the portion ofremovable cover 210 over pad 206 (which may be used for drying trim). -
FIG. 11 depicts a cross sectional view ofhead 202 according to one embodiment. 220 and 222 may be connected toBarrier elements base fabric 218. In one embodiment, 220 and 222 are a seam of rubber that replaces the yarn fibers of the cloth at the location of the barrier element.barrier elements 220 and 222 may be recessed relative to the front cloth portions ofBarrier elements removable cover 210. - Although two front pads (
pad 204 and pad 206) are included in the embodiment shown inFIGS. 9-11 , a cleaning device in certain embodiments includes only one pad. In one embodiment, a cleaning device includes only dry pads. Different cleaning portions can be separate pads or cloths, or part of the same pad or cloth. In certain embodiments, a cleaning portion may be only a cover (e.g., with no pad underneath.) - In some embodiments, a device includes leading and trailing cleaning portions. A leading cleaning portion may be proximate to the leading end of the device (e.g., the end of the device that passes over the trim first.) A leading cleaning portion may be proximate to the leading end of the device. (e.g., the end of the device that passes over the trim last.) Leading and trailing cleaning portions may be stand-alone elements or they may be integral with other parts of a cleaning device. For example,
portion 214 ofremovable cover 210 may be a leading portion, andportion 216 ofremovable cover 210 may be a trailing portion. - In an embodiment, leading and trailing portions in a cleaning device are used to clean sections of a trim near an interior corner of a room.
FIGS. 12A-12D depict use of a cleaning device at an interior corner of a room according to one embodiment. Baseboard cleaner 250 is operable to cleanbaseboard 252 andbaseboard 254 in the vicinity ofcorner 256. Baseboard cleaner 250 includes wetfront cleaning portion 258, dryfront cleaning portion 260, wet leadingcleaning portion 262, and drytrailing cleaning portion 264. Referring toFIG. 12A , baseboard cleaner 250 is moved alongbaseboard 252 in the direction of the arrow until baseboard cleaner 250 contacts baseboard 254 atcorner 256. At this point, wetfront cleaning portion 258 has wetted theentire baseboard 252, includingsection 252A proximate to corner 256. However, dryfront cleaning portion 260 cannot advance acrosssection 252A ofbaseboard 252 todry section 252A because baseboard cleaner 250 has bottomed out againstbaseboard 254. Referring toFIG. 12B , as baseboard cleaner 250 is further advanced, wetfront cleaning portion 258 and dryfront cleaning portion 260 separate frombaseboard 252. Nevertheless, drytrailing cleaning portion 264 can be kept in contact withbaseboard 252 throughoutsection 252A. At the same time, wet leadingcleaning portion 262 can be swept acrosssection 254A ofbaseboard 254. Referring toFIG. 12C , baseboard cleaner 250 is advanced such that wetleading cleaning portion 262 sweeps over all ofsection 254A and drytrailing cleaning portion 264 sweeps over all ofsection 252A. Referring toFIG. 12D , when drytrailing cleaning portion 264 reachescorner 256, wetfront cleaning portion 258 and dryfront cleaning portion 260 once again may be in full contact withbaseboard 254. Baseboard cleaner 250 may be moved in the direction of the arrow alongbaseboard 254 to cleanbaseboard 254. -
FIGS. 13A and 13B depicts use of an alternate embodiment of a cleaning device that can be used to apply both wet and dry cleaning portions in sections of baseboards near a corner.Cleaning device 290 includeshandle 291 andhead 292.Head 292 includes wetfront cleaning portion 293, dryfront cleaning portion 294, wetauxiliary cleaning portion 295, and dryauxiliary cleaning portion 296.Head 292 may be placed in contact withbaseboard 252 such that wetfront cleaning portion 293 and dryfront cleaning portion 294 sequentially pass over a given section ofbaseboard 252. The user may not be able to reachsection 252A ofbaseboard 252 dryfront cleaning portion 294 and may not be able to reachsection 254A ofbaseboard 254 with wet front cleaning portion 293 (for reasons similar to those discussed above with respect toFIG. 12B ). Referring toFIG. 13A ,head 292 may be repositioned so that dryauxiliary cleaning portion 296 can be moved acrosssection 252A in the direction ofarrows 298. Referring toFIG. 13B ,head 292 may be repositioned so that wetauxiliary cleaning portion 295 can be moved acrosssection 254A in the direction ofarrows 299. - Although in
FIGS. 12A-12D , 13A, and 13B, the cleaning device is shown moving from left to right, in other embodiments, a cleaning device may be operated from right to left. The wet and dry pads may be reversed from what is shown inFIGS. 9 , 10, and 11. In one embodiment, a head includes a mechanism for rotating the pads on a base plate such that the position of the pads is reversed (e.g.,pads 204 and 206) while a main structure of the head remains in the same position (e.g., roller still face downward). For example, 204 and 206 can be mounted on a sub-plate that is rotatable with respect to a main base plate of the head.pads -
FIG. 14 depicts a cleaning device for crown molding according to one embodiment.Cleaning device 300 includeshead 302 and handle 304.Head 302 can be moved across thecrown molding 306 to cleancrown molding 306. In certain embodiments,cleaning device 300 includes wet and dry portions that are passed overcrown molding 306 sequentially. -
FIG. 15 depicts a cleaning device for chair rail according to one embodiment.Cleaning device 310 includeshead 312 and handle 314.Head 312 can be moved acrosschair rail 316 to cleanchair rail 316. In certain embodiments,cleaning device 310 includes wet and dry portions that are passed overchair rail 316 sequentially. -
FIG. 16 depicts a cleaning device for a baseboard and quarter round according to one embodiment.Cleaning device 320 includeshead 322 and handle 324.Head 322 can be moved across thebaseboard 326 andquarter round 328 to cleanbaseboard 326 andquarter round 328. In certain embodiments,cleaning device 320 includes wet and dry portions that are passed overbaseboard 326 andquarter round 328 sequentially.Head 322 includescontour 323.Contour 323 may improve cleaning of trim by allowing the head to get into irregular surfaces or grooves (e.g.,groove 330 in baseboard 326). In some embodiments, cleaning portions may be textured. - In some embodiments, a cleaning device includes a wringing mechanism. As used herein, a wringing mechanism includes any element or combination of elements that force liquid out of a sponge or other cleaning element. Elements of a wringing mechanism may include, for example, levers, plates, hinges, or rollers. In one embodiment, a wringing mechanism folds two or more pads of a cleaning device into one another.

FIG. 17 depicts cleaning device including a wringing mechanism according to one embodiment.Cleaning device 400 includeshead 402, handle 404, andsqueeze plate 406.Head 402 includes cleaningsponge 407.Cleaning sponge 407 may be supplied with liquid from a fluid delivery system, such as described herein.Cleaning sponge 407 may be in-line with a dry pad, such as described herein (e.g., relative toFIG. 1 ).Squeeze plate 406 is coupled to head 402 athinge 408.Squeeze plate 406 may be swung in the direction ofarrow 412 and pressed against cleaningsponge 407 to force liquid out of cleaningsponge 407. - As noted above, the drawings and detailed description thereto are not intended to limit the invention to the particular form disclosed. For example, although the embodiments described herein depict an apparatus including two pads, it will be understood that embodiments may include only one pad, or more than two pads. As another example, although the embodiments described herein depict a handle adapted for manual use, it will be understood that the handle could be coupled to a machine, including, but not limited to, an automatic cleaning machine, a motorized cart, or a robotic device.

Claims (20)
1. A device for cleaning trim of a room, comprising:
a head comprising;
at least one first cleaning portion configured to clean a first surface of the trim by moving the head in a lengthwise direction of the trim; and
at least one second cleaning portion configured to clean a second surface of the trim by moving the head lengthwise direction of the trim, the second surface being above the first surface and not co-planar with the first surface; and
a handle coupled to the head;
wherein the head comprises a removable cover configured to clean the trim, wherein at least part of the first cleaning portion and the second cleaning portion are formed in the removable cover.
2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the at least one first cleaning portion comprises a front cleaning portion configured to clean a front face of a baseboard, wherein the at least one second cleaning portion comprises a top cleaning portion configured to clean the top face of a baseboard.
3. The device of claim 1 , wherein the at least one first cleaning portion comprises one or more wet portions and one or more dry portions.
4. The device of claim 3 , further comprising a fluid delivery system configured to deliver fluid to at least one of the wet portions, wherein the fluid delivery system comprises an electric pump.
5. The device of claim 3 , wherein the removable cover comprises a barrier portion between at least one of the wet portions and at least one of the dry portions.
6. The device of claim 3 , further comprises a barrier portion to inhibit liquid from leaking out the bottom of the head.
7. The device of claim 1 , wherein the head further comprises a leading cleaning portion proximate to a leading end of the head.
8. The device of claim 1 , wherein the head further comprises a trailing cleaning portion proximate to a trailing end of the head.
9. The device of claim 1 , wherein the head comprises one or more rollers, wherein the removable cover opens downward, wherein the removable cover comprises openings for the rollers.
10. The device of claim 1 , wherein the removable cover is textured or contoured.
11. The device of claim 1 , wherein the removable cover comprises a pile material.
12. A device for cleaning trim in a room, comprising:
a head comprising a removable cover, wherein the head comprises:
at least one front cleaning portion configured to clean a front surface of the trim by moving the head in a lengthwise direction of the trim;
a leading cleaning portion proximate to a leading end of the head; and
a trailing cleaning portion proximate to a trailing end of the head; and
a handle coupled to the head.
13. The device of claim 12 , further comprising a removable cover, wherein the leading cleaning portion and the trailing cleaning portion are part of the removable cover.
14. The device of claim 12 , wherein the front cleaning portion comprises one or more wet cleaning portions and one or more dry cleaning portions.
15. The device of claim 14 , wherein the leading cleaning portion is configured to be wetted.
16. The device of claim 14 , further comprising a wringing device configured to force liquid from at least one of the wet cleaning portions.
17. The device of claim 12 , wherein the trim comprises crown molding.
18. A method of cleaning trim at a corner of a room where a first section of trim on a first wall meets a second section of trim on a second wall, comprising:
moving a front cleaning portion of a cleaning device lengthwise across the first section of trim;
moving a leading cleaning portion of the cleaning device across the second section of trim proximate to the corner; and
moving a trailing cleaning portion of the cleaning device across the first section proximate to the corner.
19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the leading cleaning portion is wet and the trailing cleaning portion is dry.
20. A device for cleaning trim in a room, comprising:
a head, comprising;
at least one first cleaning portion configured to clean a first surface of the trim by moving the head in a lengthwise direction of the trim; and
at least one second cleaning portion configured to clean a second surface of the trim by moving the head lengthwise direction of the trim, the second surface being above the first surface and not co-planar with the first surface; and
a handle coupled to the head;
wherein at least one of the first cleaning portions is formed as a unitary member with at least one of the second cleaning portions.
