(01. 112-142) I T The present invention relates to a feller for sewing machines for the making of curved or straight lap seams, of the type described in United States Patent No. 1,241,739, issued to me, as joint inventor on the 2nd day of October, 1917, and it is the object of the present invention toprovide a feller of the character described possessing improved means for adjusting the width of the seams produced by it, which means-may beadjusted at any time during the operation of the machine, Without disturbing the set-up of the feller and without removing the work therefrom, by simple, easily operable and effective adjustingmeans.
In the accompanying drawing illustrating a preferred embodiment of the feller of the present invention with its improved adjusting'means,

Formed on the rear central portion of the base plate I0 is a raised, substantially rectangular platform, l2, its surface inclining slightly rearwardly, and its rear leftcornerforming a tongue, l3, overhanging its rear wall. To the leftv of the platform, l2, the base plate, I0, is provided with a work sliding portion, l4.
The platform, I2, is provided with a pair of seats or sockets, l 5, in the center of each of which is a threaded screw opening, 16, for the purpose of mounting and securing thereon a scroll plate,
l1, having depressions, l8, somewhat smaller than and adapted to fit movably within the sockets I5.
Each of the said depressions, I8, is slotted, asat, l9, through which slots pass screws 20, into the threaded openings, 16, to secure and adjust the scrollplate, IT, to the base plate, 10, the heads of the screws, 20, fitting within the depressions, I8, substantially flush with the surface of the scroll plate, I 1, to present a smooth and even surface, unobstructed for the passing of the work thereon. Furthermore, it has been found that continued use of the feller rapidly wears out the left wall of the platform, I2, due to the friction of the work fabric against it, thus throwing the seam forming portion of the feller out of gear and requiring the replacement thereof entirely or of its base plate, In. To eliminate these disadvantages I have devised the auxiliary seam adjusting unit, 30, which I will now describe.
Such seam adjusting unit, 30, comprises an arcuate channelled central portion, 31, adapted to rest against the left wall of the platform, II, which may also be channelled to receive it, the channel facing the scroll portion of the scroll plate, I1, and forming the back of the 0 channel 28. Extending from the front end of the arcuate channel portion 30 is a resilient spring tongue, 32, which may be turned to the right and provided with an opening, 33, through which it may be secured to the front wall of the platform [2, by means of a screw, 34 engaged in the threaded opening provided for the purpose in the front wall of the platform l2. Any means for securing the front end of the adjusting unit 30 to the base plate may be employed, however, without detracting from its operability. Extending from the rear end of. the arcuate channel portion, 3 I, and preferably integral with it, is an arm, 35, which may be turned downwardly and then to the right to contact with the rear wall of the platform, l2. The arm, 35, is provided, adjacent its free end, with a slot, 36, through which may pass a screw, 31, into the threaded opening, 38, provided for it in the base plate l2. The free end of the arm 35 maybe turned up to form a lug, 39, to facilitate the handling thereof, as will hereinafter be explained. The head of the screw, 31, may be of the usual type, requiring a screw driver to turn it, but may be, preferably,-elongated and knurled, to enable manual operation thereof. n
It is apparent from the foregoing description that the width of the seam may be adjusted by loosening the screw, 31, and moving the rear end of the arcuate channel portion by means of the lug, 39, to either narrow or widen the rear opening of the channel 28, and then tightening the said screw to maintain the adjusting unit 30 in its new position. This may be readily done because of the flexibility of the tongue 32, by which it is secured at it front end.
It is readily apparent to those skilled in the art that the device of the present invention is highly effective for its purpose and that it lends itself readily to compensate, by adjustment, for any wearing out of the back portion of the channel 28, and that it may be economically replaced at small cost.
This completes the description of the felling device of the present invention with its auxiliary seam adjusting means, and of its mode of operation. It is to be clearly understood, however,
that I do not wish to be limited to the embodiment thereof herein described, as, obviously, others may be made, without the exercise of the inventive faculties and within the meaning and scope of the claims hereto appended.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. A device of the character described, comprising a base plate having an elevated, substantially rectangular platform at its rear central portion, an arcuate guiding member positioned alongside the left wall of the said platform, a flexible tongue extending from the front end of the said guiding member and secured to the said platform, an arm extending from the rear end of the said guiding member adjustably secured to the rear wall of the said platform, a plate mounted on the said platform having a scroll portion overhanging the left wall of the said platform and the guiding member positioned alongside thereof, the said scroll portion forming an upper C shaped channel facing the said platform and forming with the said guiding member and the left portion of the base plate a lower 0 shaped channel facing in the opposite direction, the upper curved portion of the lower channel overhanging the lower curved portion of the said upper channel.

A device of the character described, comprising a base plate having an elevated, substantially rectangular platform adjacent its rear edge, an arcuate guiding member positioned alongside the left wall of the said platform, a fiexibletongue extending from the front end of the said guiding member and secured to the said platform, an armextending from the rear end of the said guiding member along the rear wall of the said platformand adjustably secured thereto, a plate mounted. on the'said platform having a scroll portion over-. hanging the left edge of the said platform and the guiding member positioned alongside thereof, the.
