Description

Jmy 29 1935. W. J. DE WITT SHOE DISPLAY DEVICE' Filed Jan. 14, 1955 Patented July 2, 1935 UNITED STATES SHOE DISPLAY DEVICE William J. De Witt, Auburn, N. Y., assignor to Shoe Form Co., Inc., Auburn, N. Y., a corporation of New York Application January 14, 1933, Serial No. 651,774
3 Claims.
This invention relates to an improvement in a shoe display device, and more particularly to means for so treating the shoe that it will pref sent a pleasing appearance when on display in a show case or window or on a counter or shelf.
The primary object of this invention is to provide a cap to close the top opening of the shoe and means for positioning such cap; such positioning means being, for example, a shoeform by which the toe of the shoe is plumped out so that the shoe simulates its appearance when worn on the foot.
Other objects will appear from a consideration of the following description of one embodiment of the invention and of the drawing which forms a part thereof and in which Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a shoe provided with a cap to close the top opening and embodying this invention, portions of the shoe and the cap being broken away to disclose the invention more clearly;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation, on a larger scale, of the cap shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of such cap; and
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken along the line 4 4 0f Fig. 2.
The shoe I selected for the purpose of demonstrating this invention is of the oxford type having a top opening II closed by a cap I2. The cap I2 is of celluloid or other resilient formable material having a ange I3 which enters the shoe and bears against the walls thereof and a knob or button I4 which may be removably secured at the center of the top of the cap. The surface of the top is preferably arcuate, as shown in Fig. 2, being higher at the forward end than at the rearward end. The inclination of the flange varies, being greater at the forward portion which engages the vamp of the shoe than at the rearward portion which engages the heel.
Inserted into the toe of the shoe is a shoe form comprising a toe portion I 5 and a rear` Wardly extending back part wire I6 which rests normally against the heel counter. The cap is here shown to be supported in position by means of the shoe form, the forward portion of the flange I3 being inserted between the vamp of the shoe and the cone of the toe portion I5 and the end of the back part Wire entering the angle formed at the junction of the top and the rearward portion of the flange I3. The back part wire I6 here shownis looped and the strands thereof bear against the sides of the flange I3. Thus the flange I3 of the cap is yieldably held (Cl. lf2-128.1)
against the walls of the shoe at a number of points to resist any tendency of the cap to move downwardly through the top opening into the shoe.
When the cap is to be applied to a shoe having a shoe form therein the forward portion of the flange I3 is inserted between the cone of the toe portion I5 and the vamp of the shoe, the tip of the back part 'wire is raised and inserted into the cap and then the rearward portion of the cap is slipped down through the top opening into contact with the heel of the shoe.
While one embodiment of the invention has been shown and described, I am not limited thereto since other embodiments may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as set forth in the following claims.
I claim:
1. Means for providing a pleasing finish to a shoe comprising a shoe form having a toe portion for plumping out the toe of the shoe and a back part wire normally adapted to engage the heel counter of the shoe and hold the toe portion in the plumping out position, and a cap to close the top opening of the shoe, said cap being independent of but supported by the shoe form and held` by the back part wire in contact with the heelcounter of the shoe.
2. Means for providing a pleasing finish to a shoe comprising a shoe form having a toe portion for plumping out the toe of the shoe and a back part wire normally adapted to engage the heel counter of the shoe and hold the toe portion in the plumping out position, and a flanged cap to close the top opening of the shoe, said cap being independent of but supported by the shoe form, the cap being held in contact with the shoe upper by the top portion of the form and with the heel counter of the shoe by the back part Wire, both the toe portion and the back part wire bearing against the inner face of the cap flange.
3. Means for providing a pleasing nish to a shoe comprising a shoe form having a toe portion for plumping out the toe of the shoe and a back part wire normally adapted to engage the heel counter of the shoe and hold the toe portion in the plumping out position, and a flanged cap to close the top opening of the shoe, said cap being independent of but supported by the shoe form, the back part wire entering the cap and bearing against inner face of the cap flange whereby the flange is held against the heel counter of the shoe.
