4 Claims.
This invention relates to a toy primarily designed to suggest and simulate hunting and particularly squirrel hunting.
It is aimed to provide such a toy as is distinctive, original, and unusual having a direct and immediate appeal to children and one which affords humor and entertainment.
It is particularly aimed to provide such a constructlon as may be expeditiously manufactured at reasonable cost and a construction which will prove durable.
The various additional objects and advantages will in part be pointed out hereinafter and otherwise become apparent from a consideration of the description following taken in connection with accompanying drawings illustrating an operative embodiment.

Referring specifically to the drawings, l0 designates a conventional hollow upright casing-or support mounted in any suitable manner as on a base ll. These parts l0 and ii are preferably stamped from sheet metal and secured together by slots and bent over lugs as at l2, although no limitation in this regard is to be implied.
All of the operating mechanism is concealed within the casing. Referring in detail to such mechanism, l3 represents a transverse operating shaft equipped with a handle i l located exterior- 1y of the casing, the shaft being journaled in suitable bearings 15 within the casing. An upper transverse shaft i6 is journaled within the casing in bearings H. A pair of pulleys i8 are fixed on the shaft i3, and in line with such pulleys is a pair of pulleys l9 fixed to the upper shaft It. All of said pulleys are preferably peripherally grooved as shown and over them are trained a pair of elastic belts 20, so that upon turning the crank Hi, the pulleys will drive the belts 20.
Each belt, preferably transversely disalined, carries an object 2|, that shown simulating a squirrel. Such objects 2| are adapted to travel through vertical elongated slots 22 in the front wall of the casing about which trees are deline- 5 ated in any suitable manner as at 23. The movement of the belt thus serves to impart a vertical movement to the objects 2| to simulate a squirrel climbing a tree.
As best shown in Figures 6, 7, and 8, a ball or projection 24 is fastened to each belt adjacent the front of the object 2|, and such projections; 24 ride over undulatory or corrugated cam surfaces 25 of inwardly struck flanges or ribs arranged along the slots 22. As a result, when the object 2! moves upwardly in the slots 22, a bobbing action is imparted thereto due to the yielding of belt 20 and travel of the projection 24 over the surface 25, thus simulating the quick crawling movement of a squirrel in a more life-like manner.
The casing 10 centrally of the representations .of trees 23 has a vertical slot 21 through which a head or object 28 is adapted to be periodically projected to simulate a hunter. The object or head 28 is part of a bell crank lever 29 pivoted as at 30 within and to the casing l0. Pivoted to the lever 29 as at 3| is a pitman 32 which is connected to a crank 33 formed centrally on the shaft i6. 30
Another object 34 simulates a hunting dog and it is rigid on a horizontal plate 35, fixed on a vertical shaft 36 suitably journaled in bearings 31 extending inwardly from the front wall of casing l0. Said shaft 36 at its upper end has a gear 35 wheel 38 thereon, which in turn has a gear 39 keyed on the operating shaft 13. The lower ends of the slots 22 are enlarged or cut away as at 40 to enable travel of the object 34 when the shaft 36 is rotated, it being clear that the casing at its lower end as at ll is cut away between the portions 40 to accommodate movement of the plate 35. Various changes may be resorted to provided they fall within the spirit and scope of the invention.
I claim as my invention:
1. A device of the class described having an endless belt, means to operate said belt, a casing within which the belt is mounted, and anobject carried by the belt, said casing having a slot in which the object is adapted to move during a portion of its travel, an inturned flange on the casing at said slot having an uneven free edge,
and an element on the belt movable oversaid edge to cause a bobbing actiomof the object.
2. A device of the class described comprising a casing, an operating shaft Journaled therein, a second shaft journaled therein, pulleys on said shafts, a belt traversing said pulleys, said casing having a slot therein, an object on the belt movable in said slot, one of said shafts having a crank, said casing having a second slot, an object pivoted to the casing for projection periodically through the second slot, and an operative connection between said crank and last mentioned object.
3. A device of the class described comprising a casing, an operating shaft journaled therein, a second shaft journaled therein, pulleys on said shafts, a belt traversing said pulleys, said casing having a slot therein, an object on the belt movable in said slot, one of said shafts having a. crank, said casing having a second slot, an object pivoted to the casing for projection periodically through the second. slot, an operative connection between said crank and last mentioned object, a vertical shaft within the casing, means gearing said vertical shaft to one of the first mentioned shafts, a plate on the vertical shaft, an object on said plate, and said casing having spaced cut away portions to enable travel of the last mentioned object in and out of the casing as the vertical shaft rotates.
4. A device of the class described comprising a casing, an operating shaft joumaled therein, a
second shaft journaled therein, pulleys on. said shafts, a belt traversing said pulleys, said casing having a slot therein, an object on the belt movable in said slot, one of said shafts having a crank, said casing having a second slot, an object pivoted to the casing for projection periodically through the second slot, an operative connection between said crank and last mentioned object, a vertical shaft within the casing, means gearing said vertical shaft to one of the first mentioned shafts, a plate on the vertical shaft, an object on said plate, said casing having spaced cut away portions to enable travel of the last mentioned object in and out of the casing as the vertical shaft rotates, said casing being cut away above the plate to enable the plate to extend beneath the same.
