IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED BABY JUMPER AND CARRIAGE.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 200,652, dated February 26, 1878; application filed December 24, 1877.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MARK P. GILLEN, of Forreston, in the county of Ogle and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Baby Jumper and Carriage and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.

The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a combined baby jumper and carriage, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention arranged as a carriage. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same with a basket substituted for the carriage-body. Figs. 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 are enlarged detailed views of parts thereof.

A represents the bed or bed-frame of the baby-carriage, mounted upon axles a a, on the ends of which the wheels B B are placed. These parts are intended to be so constructed that the front wheels shall be smaller than the hind wheels, as is usual in all sorts of carriages. 7 Near the front end of the bed A are secured two upright standards, 0 O, the upper ends of which are forked or formed with bearings for the reception of journals or trunnions b 1), projecting from the sides of a platform, D, for supporting the carriage-body or the basket. These journals or trunnions are located about one-third the distance (more or less) of the entire length from the front end of the platform, and it is held in position by the following means: On the front end of the bed A are secured two bars, E E, which are formedrwith series of hooks c e, and connected by spiral springs d d with similar hooked bars E E on the under side, at the front end of the platform D.

The springs d d may be adjusted forward or backward in the hooked bars E E, according to the weight of the baby and if the distance from one hook to the next should be too great to balance properly, the carriage-body may be adjusted forward or backward on the platform.

At the rear end of the platform a coil-spring, k, connects it with the bed A, for holding the parts in position. This spring also holds the platform from getting out of the standards 0.

ing upon guides or ways f f, attached to the sides of the platform, and the bodyor box is held in any position thereon by a set-screw, h. H H are the handles, connected by a crossbar, I, at their upper ends. These handles are made reversible from one end of the carriage to the other.

On each side of the bed A, near each end, is fastened a metal box, J, the inner end of which is turned over to form a catch, m. On the lower end of each handle H is fastened a flanged plate or hook, at, and on the back of the handle is attached a spring-arm, L, having a single hole at m.

For attaching the handles, the hooks n are passed into the boxes J Imtil caught by the catches m. By now bearing down upon the handles the arms L pass down against the end of the bed until the holes as spring over pins 3 in the bed, whereby the handles are held firmly in position. By releasing the arms L from the pins y, the handles can be removed, and in like manner attached at the other end of the bed.

To convert the carriage into a baby-jumper,

the body G is removed from the platform D and the box or basket P put in its place, adjusted, and fastened in the same manner as described for the carriage-body. A treadle, B, is then, by a rod, 1), connected with a screweye, 8, in the under side of the platform, for rocking the same on its journals.

When used as a baby-jumper, one of the wheels is locked by means of a hook, O, pivoted on top of the bed A, and turning so as to catch on one of the spokes of the wheel.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. The combination of the bedAwith standards O O, the platform D, hung in the standards upon trunnions b b, the hooked bars E E, adjustable coil-springs d d, and the spring 70, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.

2. The platform D, supported upon trunnions, rocked by means of springs, and provided with guides or ways f f, to receive an adjustable sliding carriage body or basket, as herein set forth.

3. The handles H H, provided with hooks n, and spring-arms L, with holes 00, in combination with the bed A, having pins y, and the boxes J, with catches m, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
