In the operation of the container, when the package is received in the form illustrated in Fig. 4, the outer sheath B is first removed. The central portion of the container A is then raised so that the bottom wall is folded along line 2|. When the box assumes the position shown in Fig. 6, the locking notches of the members 23 engageiathe. top edges of the sidewalls and secure the box portions in the angular'position shown. "It will be noted that the depending leg engages the bottom wall l8 of the container so as to hold the card in the desired position illustrated. If it is desired to return the box to its originalposition, the shoulders 24 of members 22 may be depressed to freethe'locking notches 25 from engagement with the top edges of the side walls and the rounded shoulder surfaces 24 will permit the box to fall to its initial horiz'ontal'position.
In the modification illustrated'in Fig. 10, a partition or 'shelf' 3l is provided for supporting a portion of the articles in the container. This relieves theendwall of the strain-of supporting the entire weight of'the articles to be vended. The shelf maybe formed in any suitable way. In the illustration given, the cross strip 3| is provided with reduced'ends 32-turned at right angles to the main body of the shelf. The inner-wall of each side wall is provided with a vertical slot 33, as illustrated more clearly in Fig. 13, and the reduced ends32 are extended therethrough. When the shelf is in position, the extensions 32 occupy the shaped piece provided with spaced flanges struck from oneside of the member and adapted to slidably'engage a display card 36. The U- shaped' member '34 maybe placed around the projection 23 of the locking member 22 and clamped in tight-fitting relation thereto.
' With-the box construction illustrated, it will beobservedthat the slot 20, which is transversely aligned with the slots 13in the side walls of the box, assists in the folding operation and causes the line of fold to accurately follow the slot-way "20 and in thevertical planefof the slot-ways l9.
The letter C indicates cylindrical packages of }-candy,' etc; which, along with a variety of other articles, may be satisfactorily displayed in the While, in the illustration given, I have shown a particular locking member for latching the angularly disposed compartments of the box in angular display position, it'will be readily understood that other latching means may be employed for this purpose. The foregoing detailed description has been given for clearness of understanding only, and no unnecessary limitations should understood therefrom, but the appended claims should be construed-as broadly as permisxible, inview of the prior art.
