Abstract
A device for creating indentations in a surface, such a metal plate to be used in the mezzotint technique of print making, the device including a rod having a length, a first handle connected with the rod, a second handle connected with the rod and a rotatable drum having a knurled surface. The rod includes a first portion connected with a second portion by a first bend, a third portion connected with a second portion by a second bend and a fourth portion connected with the third portion by a third bend with the rotatable drum being connected with the fourth portion, and the first handle and the second handle being connected with the first portion.
Description
- The present invention relates to a device for creating indentations in a surface. More particularly, the invention relates at a knurling hand tool and method of using same for preparing a metal plate to be used in the mezzotint technique of print making.
- Several proposals have previously been made for knurling tools. For example, U.S. Pat. No. 1,151,829 to Schliker discloses a metal knurling tool including a forked tool having a bifurcated head, the forks of the head being bifurcated, metal ornamenting wheel tools journaled in the bifurcations of the forks, and a handle to one end of which the single bifurcated end of the head is adjustably pivotally connected. The head and the handle have cooperating shoulders to limit the head in its extreme movement from one direction to an opposite direction, the single bifurcated end of the head being provided with a plurality of flat faces. A transverse thumb screw is carried by the handle to engage any one of the flat surfaces to hold the head in different positions.
- A further example, U.S. Pat. No. 632,358 to Miller discloses a knurling tool adapted to be used on a lathe. The tool includes a stock which is fixed on a carriage of a lathe and a plurality of knurls adjustably positioned on the stock and adapted to bear on substantially diametrically opposite points of the work.
- A primary of object of the invention is to provide a tool for creating indentations in or on a surface.
- A further primary object of the invention is to provide a hand tool for manually creating indentations in or on a metal surface.
- A further primary object of the invention is to provide a hand operated knurling tool for preparing a metal plate to be used in the mezzotint technique of print making.
- Another object of the invention is to provide a method for manually knurling a surface.
- The various objects of the invention are accomplished by providing a tool including a rod having a length, a first handle connected with the rod, a second handle connected with the rod and a knurled member connected with the rod. The knurled member preferably is a rotatable drum having a knurled surface. The rod can include a first portion connected with a second portion by a first bend, a third portion connected with a second portion by a second bend and a fourth portion connected with the third portion by a third bend. Preferably, the knurled member is connected with the fourth portion, and the first handle and the second handle are connected with the first portion. Further, each of the first bend, the second bend and the third bend each form a substantially ninety degree angle such that the first portion, the second portion, the third portion and the fourth portion exist in one plane.
- The objects of the invention are also accomplished by providing a hand tool including a cylinder having a knurled surface, a base connected with the cylinder, the base being adapted and arranged to support the cylinder such that the cylinder can rotate, and at least two handles connected with the base, the at least two handles being adapted and arranged to allow pressure exerted against at least one of the at least two handles to be transmitted through the cylinder to a surface. The at least two handles can be integral with or indirectly connected to the base. Preferably, the at least two handles include a first handle and a second handle, the first handle being connected about an end of the base opposite the cylinder, and the second handle being connected intermediate a length of the base. The base can include a first portion connected with a second portion by a first bend, a third portion connected with the second portion bend by a second bend and a fourth portion connected with the third portion by a third bend. Further, the cylinder can be connected with the fourth portion, and the first handle and the second handle can be connected with the first portion.
- The objects of the invention are further accomplished by providing a method of manually rocking a plate to be used for print making. The method can include providing a tool having a knurled member, means of supporting the knurled member such that the knurled member can rotate and means of grasping the tool, contacting the knurled member with a surface of the plate, and rolling the knurled member about the surface of the plate. The means of supporting the knurled member can include an arm having a first portion connected with a second portion by a first bend, a third portion connected with the second portion by a second bend and a fourth portion connected with the third portion by a third bend. Preferably, the knurled member is connected with the fourth portion, and the means of grasping the tool is connected with the first portion.
- Further objects of this invention, as well as the novel features thereof, will become more apparent by reference to the following description, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings.

FIGS. 1 through 4 , the preferred embodiment of the present invention is a hand operatedknurling tool 10 generally including ashaft 12, afirst handle 14, asecond handle 16 and acylinder 18 having a roughed orknurled surface 20.Shaft 12 is formed from a metal rod having three of bends formed along the length of the rod which partitionshaft 12 into four distinct sections.First handle 14 andsecond handle 16 are connected withshaft 12 at one end section whilecylinder 18 is connected with the other end section ofshaft 12. - More particularly,
shaft 12 is formed from a single, solid steel rod having afirst end 21 and asecond end 23 and there between afirst section 22, asecond section 24, athird section 26 and afourth section 28, each offirst section 22,second section 24, athird section 26 and afourth section 28 being defined from an adjacent section by a bend. Specifically,first section 22 is defined at one end byfirst end 21 and at another end by afirst bend 30.Second section 24 which is adjacentfirst section 22 is defined at one end byfirst bend 30 and at the other end by asecond bend 32.Third section 26 which is adjacentsecond section 24 is defined at one end bysecond bend 32 and at the other end by athird bend 34.Fourth section 28 which is adjacentthird section 26 and is defined at one end bythird bend 34 and at the other end bysecond end 23. Each offirst bend 30,second bend 32 andthird bend 34 is in the form of a right angle such thatfirst section 22 andthird section 26 run parallel to one another and perpendicular tosecond section 24 andfourth section 28. Likewise,second section 24 andfourth section 28 run parallel to one another and perpendicular tofirst section 22 andthird section 26. In addition,first bend 30,second bend 32 andthird bend 34 andfirst section 22,second section 24,third section 26 andfourth section 28 exist in a plane. - Rotatably connected about
fourth section 28 iscylinder 18. More particularly,cylinder 18 is fashioned from a steel drum having ahole 36 running completely through the central portion of the length ofcylinder 18. The outer surface ofcylinder 18 is covered byknurled surface 20. A pair of 38, 40 havingplastic spacers 42, 44, respectively, there through are located on either side ofapertures cylinder 18 such that 42, 44 are aligned withapertures hole 36.Spacer 40 is spot welded tofourth section 28 so thatcylinder 18 will not bind inthird bend 34. Thus, to connectcylinder 18 withfourth section 28,aperture 42 followed byhole 36 andnext aperture 44 are inserted aboutfourth section 28. This 38, 40 andway spacers cylinder 18 are supported byfourth section 28 in a manner that allowscylinder 18 to freely rotate aboutfourth section 28. To maintain 38, 40 andspacers cylinder 18 onfourth section 28, anotch 46 is formed completely throughfourth section 28 immediately adjacentsecond end 23.Notch 46 is adapted to receive alocking pin 48 which together withthird bend 34 maintainscylinder 18 onfourth section 28. - To allow a user to manipulate
knurling tool 10, firsthandle 14 andsecond handle 16 are connected withfirst section 22 as illustrated. Specifically,first handle 14 includes afirst passage 50 partially through the center of the length of the handle.First passage 50 is adapted to receive and firmly hold thereinfirst end 21 and a portion offirst section 22.Second handle 16, on the other hand, is connected withfirst section 22 using asecond shaft 52.Second shaft 52 is formed from a steel rod having athird end 53 and afourth end 55. Afifth bend 54 is fashioned along the length ofsecond shaft 52 thus creating afifth section 56 and asixth section 58 ofsecond shaft 52.Third end 53 ofsecond shaft 52 is welded tofirst section 22 intermediate the length offirst section 22.Second handle 16, likefirst handle 14, includes asecond passage 60 adapted to receive and firmly hold thereinfourth end 55 and a portion ofsixth section 58. First handle 14 andsecond handle 16 are made from wood. - To use
knurling tool 10, a user graspsfirst handle 14 andsecond handle 18, one in each hand, contacts knurledsurface 20 ofcylinder 18 to a surface to be treated, exerts a sufficient amount of pressure to second handle 16 that the surface to be treated receives indentations fromknurled surface 20, and movescylinder 18 across the surface to be treated usingfirst handle 14 andsecond handle 16 to guideknurling tool 10. - While I have described my invention in connection with a specific embodiment thereof, it is to be clearly understood that this is done only by way of example, and not as a limitation to the scope of my invention, as set forth in the objects thereof and in the appended claims.
Claims (31)
1. A tool comprising,
a rod having a length,
a first handle connected with the rod,
a second handle connected with the rod, and
a knurled member connected with the rod.
2. The tool according to claim 1 wherein the first handle is connected about an end of the rod, and the second handle is connected intermediate the length of the rod.
3. The tool according to claim 2 wherein the knurled member is rotatable.
4. The tool according to claim 3 wherein the knurled member comprises a drum having a knurled surface.
5. The tool according to claim 1 wherein the rod includes a first bend, a second bend and a third bend.
6. The tool according to claim 5 wherein the rod comprises a first portion connected with a second portion by the first bend, a third portion connected with the second portion by the second bend and a fourth portion connected with the third portion by the third bend.
7. The tool according to claim 6 wherein the knurled member is connected with the fourth portion.
8. The tool according to claim 6 wherein the first handle is connected with the first portion.
9. The tool according to claim 6 wherein the second handle is connected with the first portion.
10. The tool according to claim 6 wherein each of the first bend, the second bend and the third bend comprises a substantially ninety degree angle.
11. The tool according to claim 6 wherein the first portion, the second portion, the third portion and the fourth portion exist in a plane.
12. The tool according to claim 6 wherein the knurled member is connected with the fourth portion, the first handle is connected with the first portion, the second handle is connected with the first portion, each of the first bend, the second bend and the third bend comprising substantially ninety degree angle.
13. A hand tool comprising,
a rotatable member having a knurled surface,
a base connected with the rotatable member, the base being adapted and arranged to support the cylinder such that the rotatable member can rotate, and
at least two handles connected with the base, the at least two handles being adapted and arranged to allow pressure exerted against at least one of the at least two handles to be transmitted through the rotatable cylinder to a surface.
14. The tool according to claim 13 wherein the at least two handles are integral with the base.
15. The tool according to claim 13 wherein the at least two handles comprise a first handle and a second handle, the first handle being connected about an end of the base, and the second handle being connected intermediate a length of the base.
16. The tool according to claim 13 wherein the base includes a first portion connected with a second portion by a first bend, a third portion connected with the second portion bend by a second bend and a fourth portion connected with the third portion by a third bend.
17. The tool according to claim 16 wherein the rotatable member is connected with the fourth portion.
18. The tool according to claim 16 wherein the first handle is connected with the first portion.
19. The tool according to claim 16 wherein the second handle is connected with the first portion.
20. The tool according to claim 16 wherein each of the first bend, the second bend and the third bend essentially forms a right angle.
21. The tool according to claim 16 wherein the first portion, the second portion, the third portion and the fourth portion exist in a plane.
22. A method of manually rocking a plate to be used for print making comprising,
providing a tool including a knurled member, means of supporting the knurled member such that
the knurled member can rotate and means of grasping the tool,
contacting the knurled member with a surface of the plate, and
manually rolling the knurled member about the surface of the plate.
23. The method according to claim 22 wherein the means of supporting the knurled member comprises a rod-like member forming at least one bend.
24. The method according to claim 22 wherein the means of supporting the knurled member includes an arm having a first portion connected with a second portion by a first bend, a third portion connected with the second portion by a second bend and a fourth portion connected with the third portion by a third bend.
25. The method according to claim 24 wherein the knurled member is connected with the fourth portion.
26. The method according to claim 24 wherein the means of grasping the tool is connected with the first portion.
27. The method according to claim 22 wherein the means of grasping includes at least two handles.
28. A method of manually creating indentations in a surface comprising,
providing a tool including a knurled member, means of rotatably supporting the knurled cylinder and at least one handle connected with the means of rotatably supporting the knurled member, contacting the knurled member with the surface, and
rolling the knurled member about the surface.
29. The method according to claim 28 wherein the means of rotatably supporting the knurled cylinder comprises at least one bend.
30. The method according to claim 29 wherein the pair of handles is connected with a first portion of the means of rotatably supporting the knurled cylinder, the first portion being defined by an end of the means of rotatably supporting the knurled cylinder and a one of the at least one bend that is adjacent the end of the means of rotatably supporting the knurled cylinder.
31. The method according to claim 30 wherein the knurled member is connected with another end of the means of rotatably supporting the knurled cylinder.
