Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PETER G. HALPINE, OF WALTHAM, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF HIS RIGHT TO WILLIAM ROBERTS, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN ASBESTUS'SHEATHlNG-PAPER.
- Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 200,192, dated February 12, 1878; application filed January 23, 1878.
more thicknesses of asbestus paper, thereby making a fire-proof sheathing-paper.
The drawing illustrates, in section, a piece of sheathing-paper constructed in accordance with my invention.
Sheathing-paper as now commonly made is composed either of plain paper, or paper treated with tar or its equivalent.
In carrying out my invention I employ a sheet, a, of ordinary cheap paper, of such thickness as may be desired, Upon each side of this foundation-sheet a, I apply a layer or layers, 12, of asbestus paper, causing the sheets or layers a b to unite either by pressure alone, or through the agency of a proper cement.
In practice, I prefer to form these sheets or layers a 1) upon suitable well-known cylinder machines for the manufacture of paper, and lead such sheets or layers directly from such machines through suitable press-rolls, where they are united to form one sheet, as shown in the drawing.
Sheathing-paper made in accordance with this my invention is thoroughly fire-proof, and may be made water-proof by the addition to the pulp of any well-known waterproof. sizmg.
I claim- As an improved article of manufacture, sheathing-paper composed of an intermediate layer, a, and layers or sheets of asbestus paper applied each side thereof, all substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof- I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
PETER (J. HALPINE.
