This desirable result is accomplished by providing a power device controlled by the'paper for operating the clutch and stop controlling mechanism.
In general, the clutch and stop mechanism comprises an oscillatable clutch member 29 rockably mounted on a collar 30 secured to the type cylinder shaft 28, and a rock arm 3| pivotally mounted at 32 and having a clutch throw-out and stop finger 33 for throwing out the clutch and stopping the type cylinder in just the right position. This throw-out and stop finger cooperates with a wedge formation ,34 on the oscillatable clutch member 29 and with a shoulder formation on the type cylinder. A coil compression spring 36 tends to hold the control finger 33 down against a curved surface 31 on the stop plate which rotates with the type cylinder. Assuming that the finger 33 has been lifted to allow the clutch to engage and that the type cylinder is therefore being rotated, it will continue to rotate until the wedge formation on the clutch member engages the side of the control finger, whereupon the wedge formation will cause the clutch to be moved to disengaging position. The clutch disengagement will take place shortly before the shoulder on the shoulder plate engages the control finger but the momentum of the type cylinder will carry it on until the shoulder formation engages the control finger which stops it in a definite position.
The paper-controlled release mechanism for the control finger comprises a yoke-shaped rock member 38 having a pair of fingers 39 located in position to be engaged by the edge of the paper as it is drawn between the type cylinder and platen, a pair of electrical contacts 40 moved'into engagement with each other by the cross bar 4| of the yoke member as it is rocked about its pivotal mounting at 42, an electromagnet 43 controlled by the contacts, and transmission 44 from the electromagnet to the rock member on which the control finger 33 is formed. This transmission may be simply a yoke 45 connected with the armature of the electromagnet and having a pivotal connection at 46 with the rock member.
In operation, when the slip of paper is passed between the type cylinder and platen, it depresses the fingers 39 of the yoke member 38, lifting the cross bar 4| of the yoke member and bringing the two contacts 40 together. This energizes the electromagnet 43, causing the control finger 33 to be lifted to release the controlfinger from the stop shoulder and allow the clutch spring 41 to throw the oscillatable clutch plate 29 into connecting position. The type cylinder l is then given one complete rotation, being released and stopped, as previously described.
Further modifications will be apparent to those skilled in the art and it is desired, therefore, that the invention be limited only by the prior art and the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A mechanism for supplying ink to a type cylinder rotatable about a horizontal axis comprising an ink reservoir, an ink supply roller rotatable about an axis parallel to the type cylinder and engaging said type cylinder, means for driving saidroller at the same surface speed as said type cylinder, a rotatable scraper engaging said roller for spreading the ink on said roller, and means for rotating said scraper in the opposite direction to that of the roller at less average surface speed than the surface speed of the roller whereby the ink will be spread and foreign material such as lint and grit will be released from the scraper as the scraper rotates.
2. A mechanism for supplying ink to a type cylinder rotatable about a horizontal axis comprising an ink reservoir, an ink supply roller rotatable about an axis parallel to the type cylinder and engaging said type cylinder, means for driving said roller at the same surface speed as said type cylinder, a scraperengaging said roller for spreading the ink thereon, and means for effecting movement of said scraper in a direction to enable foreign material such as lint and grit to pass between the roller and scraper.
3. A mechanism for supplying ink to a type cylinder rotatable about a horizontal axis comprising an ink reservoir, an ink supply roller rotatable about an axis parallel to the type cylinder and engaging said type cylinder, means for driving said roller at the same surface speed as said type cylinder, and means whereby the roller may be adjusted toward and from the type cylinder, said driving means comprising a flexible shaft.
4. A mechanism for supplying ink to a type cylinder rotatable about a horizontal axis comprising an ink reservoir, an ink supply roller rotatable about an axis parallel to the type cylinder and engaging said type cylinder, means whereby the roller may be adjusted toward and from the type cylinder, and means for driving said cylinder and roller comprising a worm shaft, two worm gears driven from said worm shaft, and transmission from one worm gear to the cylinder and from the other worm gear to the roller.
5. A mechanism for supplying ink to a type cylinder rotatable about a horizontal axis comprising an ink reservoir, an ink supply roller rotatable about an axis parallel to the type cylinder and engaging said type cylinder, means whereby the roller may be adjusted toward and from the type cylinder, and means for driving said cylinder and roller comprising a worm shaft, two worm gears driven from said worm shaft, and transmission from one worm gear to the cylinder and from the other worm gear to the roller, said roller transmission comprising a flexible shaft.
6. A mechanism for supplying ink to a type cylinder rotatable about a horizontal axis comprising an ink reservoir, an ink supply roller rotatable about an axis parallel to the type cylinder and engaging said type cylinder, means for driving said roller at the same surface speed as said type cylinder, said roller being rotatably mounted on said reservoir, means whereby said reservoir may be adjusted toward and from the cylinder to vary the distance of the axis of the roller from the cylinder, and a flexible shaft for driving said roller.
