HARDwlcK STOVE Filed May 22, 1937 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 4 yATTORNEYS Patented Nov. 16, 1937 UNITED STATES STOVE Christopher L. Hardwick, Cleveland, Tenn. Application May 22, 1937, Serial No. 144,261
4 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in stoves, particularly to kitchen ranges in which solid fuel such as wood or coal is used. However the invention is applicable to gas ranges.
The general object of the invention is to provide a warming closet mounted in the rear of the overhanging shelf and shelf support with which stoves of this general type'are equipped.
A further object of the invention is to provide door openings in the front of the shelf support whereby access can be had to the closet from the front of the stove and in which the doors when closed serve as a splash back.
A still further object of the invention is to provide means inside of the closet for conveying heat direct from the ue of the stove to the closet.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be yapparent as the specification is considered in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a front perspective view of a range with the present invention embodied therein, one of the doors of the warming closet being open;
Figure 2. is a side view of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a section on ure 1;
Figure 5 is a fragmentary sectional view showing the top track member for the doors; and
Figure 6 is a fragmentary sectional view showing the bottom track member for the doors.
Referring more particularly to the drawings I denotes a range of the table top type having a top 2 and side walls 3, the lower part of the range, which is omitted from the drawings, being of conventional construction.
Secured to opposite ends of the range top 2 adjacent the rear edge by means of brackets or other suitable fastening means, not shown, are a pair of cast shelf supports or standards 4. 'I'he upper ends of these standards are formed with forwardly projecting ,arms 5 which support an overhanging shelf 5, bolts 'I being employed to secure the shelf to the arms. A pair of vertical sheet metal panels 20 having rearwardly extending inner and outer anges 2I and 22, bear against the rear faces 23 of the standards 4, and are secured to the standards by means of bolts 24 which pass through openings in outer flanges 22. The inner flanges 2| of the vertical panels abut rearwardly extending flanges 25, formed on the ends of a relatively low horizontally disposed panel 8 and are secured thereto by bolts 9. The
the line 4 4 of Figpanel 8 serves as a guard rail and provides means for supporting a warming closet II as well as the sliding doors I2 and I3 thereof in a manner presently described.
I'he preferably rectangular warming closet II, which constitutes the subject matter of the present invention is secured to the back of the shelf supports or standards 4 in a manner also presently described. This closet has top and bottom walls I4 and I5 respectively and end walls I6 all of sheet metal. The open front end of the closet registers with the space 30 defined by the vertical panels 20, panel 8 and the rear bottom face of shelf 6. The forward edge of the bottom wall I5 of the warming closet is extended and bent downwardly and inwardly and thence downwardly to form an attachment flange I1. A plurality of spacing brackets I8 Welded to the inner face of the panel 8 provide means for securing the flange I1 to theipanel, bolts I9 being employed for this purpose. The inner ends of the end walls I6, of the warming closet overlap the rearwardly projecting flanges 25 of the panel 8 and the lianges 2| of panel 29 and tie these parts together. The top wall I4 has an upwardly 25 bent flange 26-which is bolted to the shelf 6 and to a guard 21 at the rear of shelf 6, by bolts 28.
One or more shelves 29 suitably mounted in end and rear walls I6 and 4I respectively of the warming closet are accessible through the opening 30 which as previously explained registers with and is substantially the same shape and size as the open front end of the warming closet II. A stove pipe 3I connected at its lower end with a ue, not shown, extends upwardly through openings 32, 33 and 34 in the bottom Wall I5,
shelf 29 and top wall I4 and divides the closet into Y two compartments 35 and 36. In effect the stove pipe 3| constitutes a heater for both compartments.
vertically disposed doors I2 and I3 mounted for overlapping relative sliding movement, retain the heat in the closet when closed. 'I'he upper edges of the doors ride in guideways 31 formed in a track member 38 which is welded to the inner face of the top wall I4 of the warming closet while the lower edges of the doors slidably seat in guideways 39 formed in a rearwardly extending ange 40 of the panel 8.
What I claim is:
1. In combination with a stove having vertically disposed shelf supports at the rear of the stove, a shelf onsaid supports overhanging the top of the stove, a warming closet having an open front end secured to the rear of said shelf supports, and doors slidably mounted in said shelf support for closing the open end of said closet and serving as a splash back.
2. In combination with a stove having shelf supports at the rear thereof, a shelf on said supports, a warming closet having an open front end secured. to the rear of said shelf supports, a rail between said supports, doors mounted for relative sliding movement at the rear of said supports and rail, and serving as closures for'said open front end of said warming closet 'and as a splash back for the stove when closed.
3. In combination with a stove having ver tically disposed shelf supports at the rear of th'e stove, a shelf on said supports overhanging the top of the stove, vertical side panels and a hori- Zontal central panel at the rear of the stove, a Warming closet having a bottom and a. top wall, said bottom wall having a downwardly and forwardly bent extension secured to said horizontal panel, and said top wall having an upwardly bent flange secured to said shelf.
4. A stove as claimed in claim 3 in which the Warming closet is provided with sliding doors and the central horizontal panelV has a top flange bent to form guide ways for the lower edges of the doors CHRISTOPHER L. HARDWICK.
