V 1 Claim. This invention relates to an improved book leaf securing means and more particularly to a book leaf securing means of which a writing materials compartment forms a structural part.

=' An object of the present invention is to provide animproved book leaf securing means that comprises, as a structural part thereof, an easily accessible compartment for the storing of articles 'thatfare used with a note-book or similar article in which the book leaf securing means is positioned.

Another object is to provide, in the mechanism of a loose leaf binder or related device, a storage compartment for pencils, pen points, erasers and the'like.

A further object is to provide an improved book leaf securing means that is strong, durable and of simple and compact construction and that embodies a writing materials compartment,

With the above and other objects in view which will bereadily apparent from the following detailed description, the present invention consists in a construction and combination of parts which will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains.

A writing materials receiving drawer i, that is provided with a partition 8 that divides its interior into a plurality of compartments for the reception of writing materials of different dimansions, such as pencils in the longer compartment and pen points, erasers, pencil sharpeners and the like in the shorter compartment, makes sliding engagement with the members that intervene between the curved plate and the prongs t.

The drawer l is shown in dotted outline in Fig. l of the :drawing as being movable longitudinally of the book leaf securing means by means of a suit" able hand gripping means, such as th loop 9, that is disposed at either end of the writing materials receiving drawer 'l. The loop 9 is shown as being secured to the drawer i by the strap it, that is secured to the end of the drawer l by suitable means, such as by spotweld, solder and the like.

The drawer, I makes sliding engagement with a suitable drawer housing member that forms a part of the book leaf securing means and that is interposed between the curved plate 4 and the prongs 6. The drawer housing member comprises a base H, side walls 52 and the cover 83,

and may consist of rectangular tubing of the seamless type or of the welded seam type or a similar construction. The base it is preferably secured to the back and hinge portion 3 of the binder along with the curved plate i, by suitable means, such as by the rivet 5, one of which is preferably disposed at either end of the book leaf securing means.

The modified form of book leaf securing means that is shown in Figs. 6-8, inclusive, of the accompanying drawing, comprises a writing materials compartment that consists of the base l8, that is preferably continuously integral with the side walls l9. The writing materials compartment is permanently closed at either end by the end walls 29 and is releasably closed by the hinged cover 2!, to which paper engaging prongs ii are permanently secured in any desired manner. The hinged cover 2! is hingedly secured to a side wall 99 by means of the spring pressed piano hinge 22 in conjunction with the spring 22a. The hinged cover 2! is also provided preferably with a suitable releasable securing means, such as the indent 23 that springedly engages a protuberance 24; that is formed in the side wall that does not carry the spring pressed piano hinge When the hinged cover 2| is in closed position the protuberance 24 is positioned to seat within the indent 23 with sufficient rigidity to remain in place during any ordinary handling of the book.

Another modification of the book leaf securing means is shown in longitudinal section in Fig. 9 of the drawing, wherein the writing materials compartment is formed with a permanent base 25, side walls 26 and cover 27 and is separated into compartments of suitable size for the accommodation of writing materials of dilferent dimensions by the partition 28. Either end of the writing materials compartment is relea-sably closed by suitable means, such as by the end member 29, that is held in spring pressed closed position by means of the spring pressed piano hinge 3t, that is preferably secured to the base wall 25 of the writing materials compartment and that operates in conjunction with the spring 22a. The toggle enclosing spring housing 3i is preferably secured to the cover 2i of the writing materials compartment by a spot weld 32 that is disposed at either end of the writing materials compartment.

A further modification of the book leaf securing means is shown in Fig. 10 of the drawing, wherein the base 34 is preferably integrally continuous with the side Wall 35 and the cover to which the prong 8 is rigidly secured by suitable means. This form of book leaf securing means writing materials compartment is permanently closed at the ends in any suitable manner. Access to the writing materials compartment is provided by the side Wall member 37, that is maintained in releasably closed position by means of the spring pressed piano hinge 38, that is preferably carried by the base 3 3 and that operates in conjunction with the spring 22a. The side wall member 37 preferably opens along its upper edge in such a manner that pencils and other writing materials placed on its inner face roll downward by gravity into the writing materials compartment and also to provide easy access to finger engaging means 39, that carried at the upper extremity of the side wall member 3?.

Resilient means, such as the thin leaf spring 33 that is shown in Fig. 9 of the drawing, may be positioned within any of the writing materials compartments that are disclosed herein, for the purpose of preventing substantial transverse movement of the contents of the compartments. The spring 33 is preferably secured to the cover 2i of the writing materials compartment by suitable means, such as by the spot weld 32, or may be similarly mounted on the base or on the side Wall of the writing materials compartment.

All of the forms of book leaf securing means that are disclosed herein have functional advantages that overcome many difficulties and inconveniences that have been experienced heretofore by those whose work requires the use of binders of paper leaves. The constructions disclosed herein are compact, sturdy and are inconspicuously positioned in the binder. The devices position the writing materials in the closest possible location to their place of use and make them quickly and easily accessible. During the transportation of writing materials between the periods of their use, the forms of book leaf securing means that are disclosed herein, preserve both the articles themselves against misplacement, loss and injury and particularly protect the sharpened points of the pencils against breakage during even somewhat rough handling of the binder. The writing materials compartment is readily accessible and is suitable for the accommodation of the more commonly used forms of writing materials.

The forms of book leaf securing means that are disclosed herein are particularly advantageous to the smaller grade school children, girl students and the like, who are forced very generally, to carry pencils and the like to and from their classes in their hands or between the pages of books, as has been common practice heretofore. Where suitable receptacles are provided at the school and in the home for writing materials, the 1 writing materials are frequently inaccessible to the student at times when they are seriously needed. The present forms of book leaf securing means renders accessible at all times the writing materials that are used in the leaf binder with which they are used. The maintenance of unbroken and sharp pencil points, as is provided for by the present devices, is of particular importance to students in college and high school where highly detailed drawings are required, such as in classes in botany, zoology, drafting, music and the like. Various uses of the present device are also particularly advantageous as a part of the equipment of salesmen, field engineers, laboratory technicians, reporters, artists, secretaries and other workers in related fields in which a binder forms an essential tool in their labors.

t is to be understood that the particular embodiment-s of the present invention that are shown and described herein, are presented for purposes of illustration and explanation, and that various modifications in the constructions and adaptations of the book leaf securing means may be made without departing from the invention as defined in the appended claim.

What I claim is:

In a loose leaf binder of the character described provided with a cover including a back panel member; a book-like body within the cover which comprises toggle actuated loose leaf mechanism, a housing for said toggle mechanism, side and bottom wall members forming with the bottom of said toggle housing a tubular member, the bottom wall of said tubular member being secured to said back panel member and supporting and reenforcing the latter, closure walls for the ends of said tubular member to form with the latter a closed chamber, at least one of the said walls of the so formed chamber being movable to provide access to the chamber.
