This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a multiple blade plate hair clipper.
The invention has for an object the construction of an article as mentioned which is characterized by a fixedly mounted intermediate blade associated with the conventional top movable blade of a hair clipping machine, and said ixedll7 mounted intermediate blade to be mounted within a covering blade extending thereover and pivotally connected therewith intermediate of its ends and adapted to control the length to which ones hair is cut with the hair clipper.
Another one of the objects of this invention is to provide a resilient means for urging the front ends of the intermediate and the covering blades together, and to associate a means therewith for holding the intermediate covering blades adjusted to various spaced positions.
Still further the invention contemplates constructing the covering blade of a specific shape so that the intermediate blade may be housed therein to various degrees.
Another object of this invention resides in the specific construction of the means for holding the intermediate and covering blades at various adjusted positions.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawings forming a material part of this disclosurez Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of a hair clipper constructed according to this invention.
Fig.v2 is a bottom view of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the intermediate and covering blades illustrated per se.
Fig. 4 is a sectional View taken on the line 4-4 of Fig..3.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 5--5 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is an elevational view looking in the direction of the line 6--6 of Fig. 5.
Fig. 7 is a sectional view taken on the line 'I-'I of Fig. 5.
Fig. 8 is a fragmentary enlarged detailed view of a portion of the covering blade.
Fig. 9 is a fragmentary perspective view of a portion of the intermediate blade.
Fig..10 is a plan view of a portion of the intermediate blade set into a portion of the covering blade.
Fig. 11 is a sectional view similar to Fig. 4 but illustrating a modied form of the invention.
The multiple blade plate hair clipper, according to this invention, is used in combination with a hair clipper having a body lil xedly connecting with a stationary handle !I and associated with a top movable blade I2 operated in an oscillatory path by a movable handle I3. The details of construction of this portion of the hair clipper forms no part of the invention and for this reason will be omitted, particularly in view of the fact that hair clippers of this type are generally known on the market and numerous patents have been issued on them.
The hair clipper now distinguishes from prior designs by the provision oi a i-lxedly mounted intermediate blade I4 associated'with the top movable blade I 2 to cut the hair engaged between these blades. A cover blade I5 extends over the intermediate blade I4 and is xedly connected therewith by pintle screws I6. The pivotal connections are intermediate of the ends of the blades. A resilient means is provided, such as a flat spring Il, for urging the intermediate and covering blades together at their front ends. A means is also provided for holding the intermediate and covering blades in various adjusted positions. f
The intermediate blade I4 is provided with the conventional removable blocks I8 and the apertures I9 by which it is stationarily associated with the body IIl of the hair clipper. The blocks I8 are removable (the details not being shown on the drawings) to adapt the hair clipper to an electric drive when so desired. It is pointed out that the movable blades may be designed to t the top movable blade and the other parts of a` commercial hair clipper. It is for this reason that the blocks I8 are removable so that if the hair clipper is electrically driven they may be removed, and if mechanically driven, they are necessary, as is generally known.
The covering blade I5 is formed at the front with an upturned flange portion I 5a extending along finger portions I5 thereof. The finger portions I5 act as a comb for straightening out the hair when the hair clipper is run through ones hair, while the flange portion I5a acts as a guard for encasing the front edge and bottom side of the intermediate blade I4. Thus, the only exposed portion of the intermediate blade I4 is the top I4 which is the cutting edge.
At the sides, the covering blade I5 is formed I with a pair of lugs 20 Athrough which the pintle screws I@ pass to pivotally support the covering and intermediate blades. These pintle screws I6 may be removed when desired for separating the blades. At the back portion the intermediate blade l has a flange portion l5@ forming a cup 5 area ld (see particularly Fig. 4) in which the spring Il' and the holding means previously referred to may be housed. The spring I1 comprises merely a strip of spring material secured at one end by a rivet 22 and arranged so that the l0 other end is free and resiliently engages against the rear portion of the intermediate blade.
The holding means comprises a handle element 23 which is pivotally mounted by a pintle 24 at one of its ends within the cup shaped area ld.
This handle Z3 is provided with a projecting iinger 25 which engages into a space YZtl produced by a bracket 2l which is attached upon the rear portion of the intermediate blade I4, The intermediate blade is formed with a cutout area 28' immediately over the iinger 25. The finger 25 acts against an inclined base wall 29a of the bracket 2l. The arrangement is such that the spring il urges the base wall 29e against the iinger 25, and when the handle is pivoted the finger 25 acts against different portions of the base wall 29a and so forces the intermediate blade into various positions. This will cause separation between the front portions of the intermediate blade and the covering blade. In this manner 30 the cutting blades will be held spaced a predetermined distance from the roots of ones hair. This device may be readily operated by a movement of the thumb.
In Fig. l1 a modied form of the invention has been disclosed which distinguishes from the prior form in several details, According to this form of the invention there is an intermediate blade Ida pivotally connected by pintle screws i6 upon lugs Za projecting from a covering blade l5. The intermediate and covering blades are of slightly different design and shape than the corresponding blades in the prior form of the invention, but in functional respects act substantially in the same manner. A helical spring ila is interposed between the rear portions of the intermediate blade and the covering blade. In other respects this form of the invention is identical to the prior form and the same parts may be recognized by the identical reference numerals.
It is to be understood that this device may be used in connection with any size of the present hair clippers and that the shapes and proportions of the blade and the corresponding covering blade may be formed as desired.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed.
Having thus described my invention, what I 60 claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
1. In combination with a hair clipper having a body iiXedly connected with a stationary handle and associated with a top movable blade operated 65 with a movable handle a xedly mounted intermediate blade associated with Said top movable blade, a covering blade extending over said intermediate blade and pivotally connected therewith intermediate of its ends, resilient means for urging the front ends of said intermediate and covering blades together, and means for holding said intermediate and covering blades in various adjusted positions comprising a handle on said cover blade having a finger portion engaging an inclined base wall on said intermediate blade for holding said blades in fixed position after being adjusted.
