Description
June 29, 1937. J. w. EMERY 2,085,254
FMT KILN Filed sept. V12, 1936 2 sheets-sheet 2 Ww LM/5, M my Patented June 29, 1937 NETED STATES PATENT OFFICE Application September 12, 1936, Serial No. 100,444 In Great Britain February 15, 1936 1 Claim.
The present invention has relation to a frit kiln and has for its object to generally increase the utility, eflciency, and expediency of such a kiln whereby an increased output is rendered possible from a kiln of given size, and facilities are provided for change of colour, repair, cleaning and the like.
According to the present invention there is provided a frit kiln comprising in combination a box-like heating chamber, a truck adapted to be wheeled therein, a recess in the upper peripheral edge of the truck, a horizontal protruding ange in the upper area of the chamber co-operable with said recess, a forwardly and rearwardly extending recuperator fiue system at the upper part of the chamber, an air supply pipe for supplying heated air to the burner at the rear of the chamber, and which passes longitudinally through the upper part of the recuperator ue and openings in the lower part of the wall of the chamber beneath the protruding ange for the passage of air into the lower part of said chamber.
In order -that this invention may be clearly understood and readily carried into practice, reference may be had to the appended explanatory sheets of drawings, upon which:-
Figure 1 illustrates the frit kiln in longitudinal sectional elevation, and
Figure 2 in vertical sectional elevation.
In a convenient embodiment of the present invention the kiln or chamber is constructed of three brick Walls to a box-like formation, being two side walls a, all and a rear wall a2, an arched roof or top a3 being employed. It will be noted that the front of the chamber a a1 a2 a3 is open for the purpose of the reception of a Wheeled truck b b1. The body of the truck, indicated by the reference letter b, is of metal but the said truck is lined internally with refractory slabs b2 which are spaced from the metal by means of int or other heat-resisting material b3. Provided in the upper part of the chamber are protruding flanges a4 around the sides and rear, and it will be noted that at b4 the refractory brick- 4,5 work of the truck is recessed to accommodate said flanges a4. At the front of the truck a platform b5 is provided having a covering of nre brick or the like b6 and means b'l for the manipulation of the truck. This truck is provided with 50 a sealing medium, such as clay, sand and water,
or the like at the part b4, and it will be appreciated that when the truck is pushed home into the chamber a seal is effected between b4 and a4 at the sides and rear of the chamber. At the 55 front of the chamber the truck is adapted to be sealed as for instance at the opening a5 by that opening being lled with bricks, clay and the like. I 228 is an outlet for the frit which may be normally plugged, and a@ represents the openings in the wall of the chamber to permit of the passage of 5 air for cooling the lower part of the chamber and the truck, it being appreciated that the heating is effected within the truck and beneath the top a3 of the chamber. To this end the chamber at its rear a7 is open for the reception of an oil 10 or gas burner or other like heating device c.
a8 is a horizontal return flue connecting by a9 to a recuperator a1o which in turn connects with a chimney or outlet all. c1 is the secondary air supply pipe connected at the front extremity to l5 an electric blower or like device c2 and at the rear extremity terminating in a nozzle or like device c3 adjacent the burner c.
In operation it will be appreciated that the truck is normally lled with the materials to be 20 fritted and the sealing material placed about the ledge b4. The truck is then pushed home into the chamber and the seal elfected between b4 and a4. Following this operation the opening a5 is bricked up. The oil burner is then ignited and the heat 25 and products of combustion caused to pass into the interior of the truck and the upper part of the chamber, whence they flow away by means of the flue a8 and passages a9 al and all, the secondary air being supplied by way of c1 c2 c3 which 30 secondary air is heated by its recuperator al". The truck may operate on rails (not shown).
It will be appreciated that in this invention more than one truck may be utilized with the same kiln, so that dilerent coloured glazes may be 35 expeditiously constituted. Further all parts of the kiln and trucks are readily accessible for repair, cleaning, etc.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent isz- 40 A fn't kiln comprising in combination a boxlike heating chamber, a truck adapted to be wheeled therein, a recess in the upper peripheral edge of the truck, a horizontal protruding iiange in the upper area of the chamber co-operable with said recess, a forwardly and rearwardly extending recuperator flue system at the upper part of the chamber, an air supply pipe for supplying heated air to the burner at the rear of the chamber, and which passes longitudinally through the upper part of the recuperator flue and openings in the lower part of the wall of the chamber beneath the protruding flange for the passage of air into the lower part of said chamber.
