GUTHOFF ET AL HYDRAULIC BRAKE 3 Sheets-Sheet 3 Filed July 8, 1936 Patented June 15, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE HYDRAULIC BRAKE Max Guthoff, John N. Flynn, and Howard L. Smith, Cleveland, Ohio The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in hydraulic brakes and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, an apparatus embodying 5 a novel construction and arrangement of operating or controlling means.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a hydraulic brake apparatus of the aforementioned character which will be comparatively sim- 1 ple in construction, strong, durable, highly efiicient and reliable in use, compact and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become is apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanyingdrawings wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:-
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the apparatus with the upper section of the rotary pump and by-pass housings removed.
Figure 2 is a view in vertical longitudinal section through the invention.
Figure 3 is a view in end elevation of the invention with the wheel omitted, the main shaft being shown in cross section.
Figure 4 is a detail view in vertical section through the pump.
Figure 5 is a. detail view in vertical section, taken substantially on the line 5-5 of Figure 2.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the apparatus which has been illustrated comprises a shaft l 35 having fixed thereon a wheel 2. On one end of the hub 3 of the Wheel 2 is a male clutch member 4. Slidably mounted on the shaft l is a female clutch member 5 which is engageable with the male clutch member 4 for actuation thereby.
The reference numeral 6 designates generally a rotary pump of conventional construction to the ends of which a by-pass l is connected. The shaft 8 of the pump 6 has fixed thereon a gear 9 with which a comparatively long gear I ll which is integral with the female clutch member 5 is constantly in mesh.
The by-pass l is controlled by a slidable valve II which is shown to advantage in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings. Pivotally mounted on a suitable base l2 is a hand lever [3 which is operatively connected to the valve II. The hand lever I3 is releasably secured in set position through the medium of a pawl and ratchet locking mechanism M of conventional construction. The female clutch member 5 is moved toward and away from the male clutch member 4 through the medium of a fork I5 which is also pivotally mounted on the base l2. A rod It connects the fork IS with 60 the hand lever I3 for actuation thereby. Any
ever, when the hand lever I3 is moved from left to right, as viewed in Figure 2 of the drawings,
the female clutch member 5 is engaged With the male clutch member ,4, thereby connecting the rotary fluid pump 6 to the shaft l for actuation thereby. Simultaneously with this operation the valve I I is moved toward closed position for stopping or restricting the circulation of fluid through the by-pass I under impulsion by the pump 6, thereby locking said pump or reducing the speed thereof which action is, of course, transmitted to the shaft 1. A drive belt (not shown) may be trained over the wheel 2 for taking power from the shaft I.
It is believed that the many advantages of a hydraulic brake constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood, and although a preferred embodiment of the apparatus is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
A hydraulic brake apparatus of the class described comprising a shaft, a male clutch member fixed on said shaft, a female clutch member slidably mounted on the shaft and operatively engageable with the male clutch member for actuation thereby, a rotary fluid pump, a fluid by-pass connected to the intake and outlet ends of the pump, a valve for controlling the circulation of the fluid through the by-pass, means operatively connecting the pump tothe female clutch member for actuation thereby, and common means for simultaneously closing and opening the valve and for engaging the female clutch member with the male clutch member and for disengaging said female member therefrom, said means including a base, a fork pivotally mounted on the base and operatively connected to the female clutch member, a hand lever pivotally mounted on the base, a rod connecting the fork to said hand lever for actuation thereby, and
means operatively connecting the valve to the hand lever for actuation thereby.
