3 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in display devices, particularly for advertising pur-v poses, and an object of the improvement is to provide a novel device of this character which is especially adapted to be disposed 'on or in association with an automobile spare tire casing or cover.
Another object of the invention is to provide an advertising display device adapted to be operated from a running part of the vehicle propelling.

An additional object of the invention is to provide a display device of the revolving sign type in which a plurality of rotatable sign bearing cards or disks are grouped in relatively overlapping relation at the correspondingly 'split' lower ends of the sign disks with associatedmechanism shown in one position of operation.

The device is mounted on the rear end of a motor vehicle in combination with the spare tire cover thereof by a suitable bracket I having a.
horizontal spindle tube at its upper end and being provided at its lower end with a bearing 3 for supporting the outer end of the main drive shaft 4 which is adapted to be continuously and rotatively driven by a suitable connection at its other end with the fan belt or other moving part of the motor vehicle. At the other end of shaft 4 is a drive pulley 5 having' a driving connection through a belt or cable 6 with a large fan pulley wheel I rotatable on spindle 2. Pulley wheel I has a hub or sleeve 8 upon which is also fixed a smaller pulleyQ, the latter being connected by cable l0 with a large pulley ll rotatable on a stub shaft fixed near the lower end of bracket 1. Pulleys I and 8 are so proportioned that they r make one complete revolution for every quarter turn of the pulley wheel ll.
Mounted for rotation upon the outer. portion of the central tube are a number of sign disks l2, l3, l4 and I5. Although but four sign disks are 5 shown in the accompanying drawings, it is to be understood that the device may be constructed to operate more or less disks, as desired. Each sign disk is constructed, as shown in Fig. 7, with a circular body portion of smaller radius than the 10 pulley 1 and having a small central aperture 9 to receive the central tube. These disks are adapted to be provided on their respective'outer faces with suitable display and advertising matter and they are provided each with a narrow radial slot l5 11 opening outwardly from the central aperture l6 through the peripheral edge of the disk. The disks are grouped side by side on the spindle with the slotted portions 'directed downwardly and with the corresponding ends a laterally on 20 said tube and in overlapping relation with the corresponding, opposite ends b so that when a bottom or inner sign, such as the disk I2, is turned through a complete revolution it will be on the top or outer side of the group. Depending 5 from the spindle 2, behind the disk, is a hanger rod H3 at the lower end of which is a compact for holding the ends of the disk; the same comprising a' frame l9 extending crosswise of the lower slotted portions of the disk with the upper 30 horizontal member 20 providing a rest or support for the downwardlyfiexed spring hooks 2| at the peripheral edges of the disk portions a. The disks are normally positioned upon the horizontal member 20 so that the spring hooks 2| of all but 35 the innermost disks. are pressed inwardly against their corresponding edges; the spring hook of the innermost disk depending downwardly through an opening 22in frame member 20 with the hook. end thereof in position forwardlyof 40 the lower frame member 23 .to be engaged by and to be moved through one complete revolution with one arm 24 of a crank pin 25.
The crank pin 25 is journalled crosswise in the pulley wheel I near'the edge thereof with the 45 arm 24 disposed outwardly of the forward face of y of the wheel disk I- andwith its other arm 26 disposed outwardly of the rear face of said wheel 1. A spring connection 21 between the wheel'l and the crank pin 25 tends to hold the crank pin 50 arm 2 in the position indicated in full lines in Fig. 3 to abut the spring hook of the innermost disk of the group depending below the bottom member 23 of the compact frame. The rotation of the sign disk is regulated by a trip mechanism including a spring tensioned slide 28 mounted in the lower portion of bracket I and extending crosswise of the upper edge of pulley H with an inwardly disposed depending cam follower lug 29 overlying the outer face of the said pulley and having an outwardly disposed depending end lug 30 adapted to be moved, by a cam 3| on the outer face of pulley I I, in and out of the circular path travelled by the crank pin arm 26 during the rotation of wheel I. The cam 3| is designed to continuously contact the follower lug for three quarters of a revolution of pulley II to thereby hold the slide 28 displaced, against the tension of its spring, to the right of Fig. 2 so that for three revolutions of the wheel the crank pin arm 2| will be caused to jump over the depending hooks of the bottom or innermost sign disk when the crank pin is rotated about its axis by the abutment of the crank end 26 with the lug 30 of the slide. On the fourth turn of the pulley L'the rear end of the cam 3| passes beyond the follower 29, whereupon the slide is shifted by spring pressure to the right of Fig. 2, withdrawing the abutment lug 29 out of the pass of the crank pin arm 26. Hence, on the fourth turn of the wheel 1, the crank-pin arm 24 engages the spring hook of the bottom sign disk l2 and propels the same forwardly through the opening 22 in the frame and through a complete revolution; the disk being released at the completion of the turn by reason of the crank pin being again rotated about its axis by abutment of the crank pin end 26 with the slide lug 29, the latter having been in the meantime again shifted to the right by action of cam 3| in time to eil'ect the release of the sign disk l2 when the latter is at the outer side of the sign group.
Carried by the wheel I and trailing the crank pin 25 is a roller 32 which is adapted, during the rotation of the wheel 1, to roll over and press against the inner spring tensioned .end 33 of a lever 34 pivoted at 35 to the frame l9 and having a spring pressed roller 36 at its opposite end. In the horizontal position of the lever, asshown in Fig. 3, the spring pressed roller 36 presses against the outermost sign disk, such as the disk IS in Fig. 3 for the disk l2 in Fig. 4, when the latter has been moved from the inner to the outer side of the sign group. When the roller 32 of the wheel I comes into contact with the inner end of the lever, it moves the same upwardly, as shown in Fig. 4, and causesthe spring pressed roller 36 at the operative end to be lowered to engage and force the end of the outermost disk inwardly of the frame I9. v
By means of the mechanism described, the sign disks i2, i3, I 4 and I are successively moved from the inner to the outer side of the sign group with a rotary motion fon displaying their respective advertising matter. By reason of the cam mechanism and the gear ratio a new sign will be displayed every fourth revolution of the wheel 1 and will be moved from the inner to the outer side of the group in one revolution of the wheel.
,The main drive shaft 4 is placed at will into and out of driving relation with respect to the revolving sign mechanism by a conventional crutch means 31.
What is claimed is:--
1. A display device comprising a plurality of radially split sign disks disposed one against another in a compact group for rotation about a common axis, the corresponding ends of the disks at one side of the split overlapping the adjacent corresponding disk end at the opposite side of the split whereby when the innermost disk of the group is rotated through a complete turn it will be moved to the outermost side of the group, and means for rotating said disk to cause the innermost disk of the group to be rotated successively to the outermost side of the group.
2. A display device comprising a plurality of radially split sign disks disposed one adjacent another in a compact group for rotation about a common axis, corresponding ends of the said disks at one side of the split overlapping the adjacent corresponding disk ends at the opposite side of the split whereby when the innermost disk of the group is rotated to a complete turn it will be moved to the outermost side of the group, a member mounted for rotation concentrically with respect to said disk, means for imparting continuous rotation to said members, means carried by said member and engaging said disk for imparting rotation thereto, and means for placing the innermost disk successively in position to be engaged by the means carried by said member for rotation therewith.
3. A display device comprising a plurality of radially split sign disks disposed one against another in a compact group for rotation about a common axis, the corresponding ends of the disk at one side of the split overlapping the adjacent corresponding ends of the disk at the opposite side of the split whereby when the innermost disk of the group is rotated through a complete turn it will be moved to the outermost side of the group, a driving member mounted for rotation concentrically with respect to said disk,
means for imparting continuous rotation to said member, a pin carried by said member, projections on said disk to be engaged by said pin for rotating the disk with the said member, and means for placing the projections of the said disk successively in engagement with the said pin beginning with the innermost disk.
