This invention relates to cartons, and particularly to cartons which may be readily separated into a plurality of disconnected units when found desirable to divide or separate the contents 5' of the carton.

One object of the present invention is to provide a carton, separable to form disconnected units and having a plurality of compartments therein, and wherein the end of a compartment left open by; the removal of a portion of the carton may be closed to retain the contents in said compartment. 7 Another object of the invention is to provide a carton having a longitudinal partition and transverse partitions therein providing a plurality of compartments, and separable transversely of its length to form a plurality of disconnected units, and to provide means for retaining the contents in the compartments adja- 20 cent the line of separation.

A further object of the invention is to provide a retaining member for a carton unit formed integrally with the carton structure.

A still further object of the invention is to improve an article of the character described in sundry details hereinafter referred to and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Embodiments of the present invention are shown for illustrative purposes in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a carton containing an embodiment of the present invention and illustrating the means by which the carton may be separated into a pair of disconnected units;

Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary perspective view of one end of a. carton unit after the other unit has been disconnected therefrom, and illustrating features of the present invention. associated therewith;

Fig. 3 is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional elevation of the structure illustrated in Fig. 2, and taken substantially as indicated by the line 3-3 thereof;

Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional elevational view of a. portion of the structure illustrated in Fig. l, and taken substantially as indicated by the line 44 thereof; and

Referring particularly to 1 to 4, inclusive', the present invention is shown in conjunction with a carton, suitable for containing eggs or the like, indicated as a whole by the numeral 6, and comprising front and rear walls als Ma and HI), operatively connected adjacent the upper edge portion of their respective ends to .the front and rear walls I and 8, respectively, by

To facilitate the separation or severance of the carton B-transversely of its longitudinal dimensions to form a plurality of carton units 6a and 6b, a weakened portion shown, in the present instance, as a line of scoring indicated by the numeral. 2 l is formed in the cover ll, bottom 9, front and rear walls 1 and 8, respectively, and the inner or false bottom l8 of the "carton, and also with a weakened portion such as a line of scoring 22 formed in the central longitudinal partition l5 adjacent and at one side 3 of one of the recesses l6 and one of the transverse partitions indicated at l2b (Fig. 4), the l6wer end of the scoring 22 terminating in an elongated slot 23 (Fig. 4) extending through the longitudinal partition l5 in a manner to form a retaining finger 24 as clearly illustrated in Fig. 4.

It will be observed that by such an arrangement, the carton 6 may be readily separated along a line transversely of its length when found desirable to separate or divide the contents of the carton, as, for example, in selling or dispensing a half dozen eggs, or the like, and that with such separation of the carton 'into a pluralityof disconnected units, the retaining finger 24 will provide a support for the transverse partition 12b of the carton unit 6b illustrated in Fig. 4 to retain the contents in the compartments thereof adjacent the line 'of separation.

When the carton 6 is separated into its respective disconnected carton units 6a and 6b, the removal of the transverse partition l2b of the carton unit 6b (Fig. 4) will leave the compartments in the carton unit (in adjacent the line of separation open, and to retain and support the contents of these compartments in 'the carton retaining strip 25 being-provided with laterally bent side portions 26 and 21 adapted to be positioned between opposite ends of the'adjacent transverse partition [2a onthe unit 6a and the front and rear: walls 1 and 8, respectively, of the carton, the side portions 26 and 2f being provided adjacent their ends with laterally and inwardly extending protuberances 28 (Fig. 3) adapted to cooperate with the end portions of the transverse partition |2a for securing the retain ing strip against displacement with respect to the carton unit 6a, andfor providing further assurance against possible displacement of the retaining strip 25, the side portions 26 and2'l are provided adjacent their respective ends with laterally and upwardly extending hook-like portions.29 and 3| adapted to engage the flat portions [3 and M, respectively, by which the oppo- 25 'site ends of the partition 12a of the carton unit 6;! Obviously, the present invention is not limited to the precise construction and arrangement shown and described, as the same may be variously modified. Moreover, all of the features of the inventionneed' not be used conjointly as the samemay be used to advantage in variously different combinations and subcombinations.

What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: r

1. A carton having a pluralitycf transverse partitions formed integrally with the carton and forming a plurality of compartments, a line of scoring formed in the carton and extending transversely thereof adjacent'and at one side of one of said partitions to facilitate separating the carton into a pair of disconnected units, one of said units having the partition adjacent said scoring connected thereto, and a separable vertically disposed closure member operatively connected to a transverse partition inthe other of said units for closing the end of the compartment in said other unit left open by the removal of the partition adjacent said scoring. A carton having front and rear walls and a plurality of substantially vertical partitions therein forming a plurality of compartments, the material of the carton having a weakened portion adjacent and at one side of one of said partitions to facilitate separating the carton into a pair of disconnected units, one of said units having the partition adjacent said weakened portion con-l nected thereto, a closure strip on the other of said units and having its respectiveend portions positioned between the respective ends of a partition on said-other unit and the front and rear walls thereof, and inwardly extending protuberances adjacent the respective ends of said strip and engageable with the respective end portions of said last mentioned partition for maintaining an intermediate portion of said closure strip in position to close the compartment in said other unit adjacent said weakened portion.

A carton having front and rear walls and a ends of a partition on said other unit and the front and rear walls thereof, and laterally extending hook-like portions adjacent the respective and a pluralityof transverse partitions conends of said strip engageable with said fiat portions at the ends of said last mentioned partition for maintaining said closure strip in operative position with respect to said other unit.

A carton unit having front and rear walls plurality of substantially vertical transverse partitions therein forming a plurality of compartments, the material of the carton having a weakened portion adjacent and at one side of one of said partitions to facilitate separating the carton into a pair of disconnected units, one of said units having the partition adjacent said weakened porextending projections on said last mentioned end portion of said strip engageable with said last mentioned partition for maintaining said closure strip in operative position with respect to said other unit.

A carton having front and rear walls and a plurality of substantially vertical transverse partitions therein forming a plurality of compartments, said partitions including substantially flat portions adjacent their respective ends for connecting the partitions to said front and rear walls, the material of the carton having a weakened portion adjacent and at one side of one of said partitions to facilitate separating the carton into a pair of disconnected units, one of said units having the partition adjacent said weakened portion connected thereto, a closure strip formed integrally with and connected adjacent one of its endportions to the other of said units, the op-v posite end of said strip having a laterally extending hook-like portion engageable with one of the flat portions adjacent the end of one of said partitions for maintaining the closure strip in operative position with respect to said other unit.

A carton having front and rear walls and a plurality of substantially vertical transverse partitions therein forming a plurality of compartments, said partitions including integral connecting portions adjacent their respective ends for connecting the partitions to said front and rear walls, the material of the carton having aweakened portion adjacent and at one side of one of said partitions to facilitate separating the carton into a pair of disconnected units, one of said units having a partition connected thereto adjacent said weakened portion, a closure strip formed integrally with and connected adjacent one of its end portions to the-other of said units,

the opposite end of said strip having a laterally extending projection engageable with the end portion of one of said partitions for maintaining the closure strip in operative position with respect to said other unit.

A carton having front and rear walls and a plurality of substantially vertical partitions therein forming a plurality of compartments, the material of the carton having a weakened portion adjacent and at one side of one of said partitions to facilitate separating the carton into a pair of disconnected units, one of said units having the partition adjacent said weakened portion connected thereto, a closure strip on the other of said units and having laterally extending portions adjacent its respective. ends operatively connected to said other of said units for closin the end of the compartment in said other unit left open by the removal of the partition adjacent said scoring.

A carton having a main bottom, front'and rear side Walls, an inner bottom supported adjacent its longitudinal edges by said walls in spaced relation to said main bottom, a plurality of longitudinally spaced transverse partitions integrally connected to said side walls above said inner bottom, a longitudinal partition having a plurality of spaced reeses formed in its lower edge adapted to receivesaid transverse partitions,

A transversely divisible carton of paper or the like having walls forming a cover, a bottom and two longitudinal sides, said walls of the carton being weakened along a transverse division line for breaking the carton into first and second connection adjacent the other side wall for holding said strip in place at its junction with said side wall. v

A transversely divisible carton of paper or the like having walls forming a cover, a bottom and two longitudinal sides, one of the "side walls having a longitudinal portion of its width provided by at least two layers of material, said walls being weakened along a transverse line of division for breaking the carton into first and second sections, save that a portion of one oithe overlying layers is not weakened on said division line to form a longitudinal tongue normally. forming a portion of the side of the carton, said tongue being connected non-severably in'the first section and being removable from a side of the second section in the act of dividing the carton into sections whereby the said tongue is available to form an end closure for folding over the severed end of the first section.
