Description
May 18, 1937. o. w. MOJONNIER TUBE Fi led June 18, 1936 f 6 J0 n n W 0 Patented May 18, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to tubing and more particularly to tubing which may be used for heat exchange purposes or may be used for mixing of diiferent liquids.
An object of this invention is to provide a tube or pipe which may be constructed from sheet metal and which is provided on the interior thereof with alternately spaced opposed projections which provide a tortuous passage for liquid flowing through the tubing so that this liquid will be mixed thoroughly in its passage through the tube without in any way impeding the flow of the liquid through the tube.
Another object of this invention is to provide a tube which may be constructed of relatively thin sheet metal and which includes means whereby the metal is strengthened so that it will not readily bend.
A further object of this invention is to provide a tube which is constructed of opposed grooved members constructed of relatively thin sheet metal and provided with flanges on the opposing edges thereof, With the flanges of one grooved member confronting the flanges of the other grooved member and securing the confronting flanges together as by soldering or welding so that these flanges will also assist in preventing the bending of the tube.
The above and various other objects and advantages of this invention will in part be described in, and in part be understood from the following detail description of the present preferred embodiment, the same being illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary front elevation of a tube constructed according to an embodiment of this invention.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section taken on the line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a transverse section taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing wherein like symbols designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral l0 designates generalr ly one-half of a tube and the numeral ll designates a confronting half section of a tube constructed according to an embodiment of this invention. These sections l0 and II are identical in construction and are formed from an elongated relatively thin sheet of metal. The section I0 is constructed with a longitudinally grooved portion I2 and with marginal flanges [3 extending along the longitudinal edges of the grooved intermediate portion l2. The grooved portion I2 is provided with a plurality of detents M which provide convex projections substantially oval shaped on the inside of the grooved portion I 2.
The other section II comprises an intermediate grooved portion l5 and marginal flanges l6 which are adapted to confront the marginal flanges ii! of the tube section It]. The confronting flanges l3 and I6 are secured together by suitable fastening means and, in the present instance, these flanges i3 and I6 are secured together as by soldering or welding l1. When the two grooved portions l2 and I5 are secured together, they provide an oval or elliptical shaped tube but it will, of course, be understood that the particular configuration of the tube in transverse section may be varied to suit the desires of the user. The tube section II is provided with a plurality of detents l8 which are longitudinally spaced apart and are convex on the inside of the groove with the shape of the detents I8 similar to the shape of the detents M. The detents l8 are alternately spaced one between each pair of detents l4, so that the detents in the opposite sides of the tube will not impair the flow of any liquid through the tube but, at the same time, will provide a tortuous passage inside the tube so that several kinds of liquids may be discharged into the tube and by reason of the tortuous passage provided by the detents l4 and I8 these different liquids will be thoroughly mixed as the liquids flow through the tube. These detents will also provide ameans whereby the heat exchange, that is, either hot or cold, may be more readily effected and in this manner the tube herein disclosed may be used for either cooling or heating of a liquid or liquids.
The detents l4 and It by reason of their convex construction and by reason of the oval shape thereof, will also eliminate the possibility of any accumulation of solids within the tube, as these projections. will provide a tortuous passage inside the tube which is so constructed that the flow of the material through the tube will carry along all of the liquids which will not, at any time, be pocketed by reason of the projections forming the tortuous passage.
It is, of course, understood that various changes and modifications may be made in the details of construction and design of the above specifically described embodiment of this invention without departing from the spirit thereof, such changes and modifications being restricted only by the scope of the following claim.
I claim:
A tube comprising an elongated tubular body constructed of opposed grooved members providing an elliptical tube in transverse section, longitudinal flanges carried by the longitudinal edges of the members, means for securing the confronting flanges together, and spaced apart convex projections carried by each member, the projections of one member being alternately spaced with respect to the projections of the other member.
