This invention relates to spark plugs wherein two separate sparking points are provided in series, and an object thereof is the provision of an improvement whereby such a plug may be constructed so as to be simple and inexpensive in cost of manufacture and efficient in operation.
A further object of the invention is the pro vision of a readily mountable and replaceable element forming an essential part of the plug.
The above and other objects will become apparent in the description below, in which characters of reference refer to like-named parts in the accompanying drawing.
Referring briefly to the drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of the plug, partly in section.
Figure 2 is a cross-sectional view taken on the line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a bottom-plan view of the metallic conducting element with its sparking rods.
Figure 4 is an elevational view of Figure 3.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral I indicates the porcelain body of the spark plug, and II the metallic base having a threaded sleeve l4 extending therefrom and which is adapted to be screwed into the opening in the cylinder head l3. The positive conducting rod l5 extends in a straight line to a point just below the periphery of the sleeve I4, at which point the rod I5 is bent slightly, as shown. The porcelain body l0 continues through the base H and fills the space enclosed by the sleeve l4 and projects slightly therebeyond. At its lower end the body I0 is scooped out to provide an opening therein, and a smaller concentric extension of this opening is provided at its upper extremity. The latter is provided with screw threads IS. A porcelain knob l8 having a threaded stem extension I l is adapted to be inserted into the opening in the body Ill with the stem ll threadably engaging the threads I 6. A negative conducting rod or pole 23 is provided at one side in the sleeve M.
A flat metallic member l9 having a substantially oval periphery and provided with a circular opening 22, has integrally therewith a pair of metallic spark poles 20 and 2| extending at right angles from the ends thereof. In assembling the plug, the member I8 is inserted into the larger opening in the body ID with the poles 28 and 2| registering in the niches 24 provided at opposite points in the wall surrounding the said opening. The knob I8 is then screwed into this opening, the assembling to the above point having been done before the rod l5 has been bent at its extremity. After the knob l8 has been screwed home, the rod I5 is bent as above mentioned. Thus, all four spark poles I5, 20, 2|, and 23 are in alignment.
In operation, the electric impulse comes down through the rod l5, from the lower end from which it jumps to the pole 2|, then it passes through the member I 9 and jumps from the pole 20 to the pole 23 which is, as is obvious, grounded. Thus two sparks are passed practically simultaneously, whereby a more complete 10 and eflicient instantaneous combustion is attained.
Obviously, modifications, in form and structure may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
I claim:
1. A spark plug comprising a metallic base having a threaded sleeve extending therefrom and a porcelain body filling said sleeve, said body being provided with a substantially cylindrical opening at its lower end, a reduced and threaded opening extending upward from said larger opening, the wall surrounding said larger opening being provided with niches on opposite sides, a substantially oval metallic member having a circular opening therein being inserted into said larger opening, a knob registering in said larger opening and having a threaded stem registering in said threaded extension opening, metallic rods integral with said oval member and extending at right angles from opposite ends thereof, said rods lying in said niches and projecting from the lower extremity of said body, a metallic rod extending axially through said body and said knob, said last-named rod extending beyond said knob and having its extremity adjacent the protruding end of one of said rods on said oval member, and a fourth metallic rod integral with said sleeve having its extremity adjacent the end of the other of said rods on said oval member.
2. A spark plug comprising a metallic base having a threaded sleeve extending therefrom and a porcelain body filling said sleeve, said body being provided with a substantially oval opening at its lower end, a current carrying rod extending axially through said body and opening and projecting beyond said sleeve, a similar rod extending from said sleeve, a substantially oval metallic member removably mounted in and registering in said opening, said member having a pair of rods extending therefrom at opposite ends thereof, and a knob releasably mounted in said opening against said metallic member to retain the latter in said opening with its rods in alignment with said first named rods.
3. A spark plug comprising a metallic base having a threaded sleeve extending therefrom and a porcelain body filling said sleeve, said body being provided with an opening at its lower end, said opening having extensions into the walls of said body surrounding said opening, a current carrying rod extending axially through said body and opening and projecting beyond said sleeve, a similar rod embedded in said sleeve, a metallic flat member removably mounted in said opening, said flat member having extensions registering in the said extensions of said opening, said member having a pair of rods extending at right angles therefrom at opposite ends thereof, and a knob releasably mounted in said opening against said metallic member to retain the latter in said opening with its rods in alignment with said first named rods.
