Description
I A. F. PITT. Toe-Weight for Horses.
Patented Aug. 27. 1878 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALEXANDER F. PITT, OF JERSEYVILLE, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT lN TOE-WEIGHTS F OR HORSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 207,547, dated August 27, 1878; application filed July 13, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER F. PITT, of J erseyville, in the county of Jersey and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toe-Weights for Horses; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is aview in perspective of my improved toe-weight for horses, showing the same applied to the hoof of the animal. Fig. 2 is a rear view, showing the manner of connecting it to the heel of the horseshoe. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view through the hoof and the pocket, and Fig. 4is a perspective view of the toe-weight removed.
This invention has relation to toe-weights for horses; and consists in the improvements in the construction of the same, hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
A represents the horses hoof, and B the shoe in place thereon. The shoe B has the notch C in its upper face at the central portion of the curve, and is provided in the ends at the heel with recesses D D for the reception of the hooks E E upon the straps F1. The hooks E E are forged from iron or steel, and have the rollers G G to permit the straps F F to be readily tightened to hold the toe-weight in place. The pocket H, for the reception of the Weight I, has the flap J and the ears K K, to which the straps F F are secured, and is provided at its bottom with the bent metal strap or hook L, which, when the toe-weight is applied, enters the notch Gin the shoe B. Buckles M M are sewed to the ears K K to confine the ends of the straps F F. To apply the toe-weight the hook L should be inserted in the notch G, the hooks E E entered into the recesses D D, and the straps F F tightened. The manner in which the weight is to be increased or lessened is obvious.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. In toe-weights for horses, the combination of the pocket H, provided with the bent metal strap or hook L, and the straps F F, provided with the hooks E E, with the shoe B,provided with the notch O and the recesses D D, constructed and operating substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In combination with a toe-weight, the straps F F, provided with the hooks E E, and the horseshoe B, having the recesses D D in the heel thereof, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALEXANDER F. PITT.
