' UNITED STATES PATENT oFFl-cE This invention relates to an improvement in razors, and more particularly of the character shown and described in my co-pending applications for patent, Serial No. 707,881 filed January 23, 1934, and Serial No. 638,313 illed October 18, 1932. In said application for patent, Serial No. 707,881, a novel form of razor blade and holder therefor are shown, in which the blade is of the wafer type and has parallel cutting edges; a slot running lengthwise of the blade at an oblique angle to the edges, and the holder acts to flex the blade about an axis of curvature extending along the blade at an oblique angle to the cutting edges. With said structure, `the blade is so flexed l5 that one of its cutting edges ascends and the other cutting edge descends at the same end of the razor, and by this particular inclination of the cutting edges a desirable shearing cutting edect is obtained.
The object of this invention is to provide a blade holder for a blade of the character just described which will clamp and ex the blade in the manner heretofore set forth and in such a waythat the cutting edges of the blade will tend to lie perfectly straightl and in absolute parallelism with4 the edges of the holder.
In the accompanying drawing, Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a razor constructed in accordance with this invention; Fig.,2 is a plan view of the same; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the blade table or guard; Fig. 4 is a view of the underside of the cap; Fig. 5 is a sectional view through the razor on the line ,ii-5 of Fig. l, looking in the direction of the arrows; Fig. 6 is an end view of the razor;
and Fig. 7 is a plan View of the blade.
The razor shown in the drawing is of the so-called hoe type safety razor and includes a handle 6 Il, and a holder for a double-edged wafer type blade, comprising a blade table or guard 62 and a blade cap '63. A double-edged blade Bft shown in Fig. 7, is adapted to be clamped between the two members vof the holder in such a position that the cutting edges 65 of the blade are brought over the marginal combs 66 of the blade table 62,
l so'that the latter member serves as a safety or guard plate. `The blade 34, substantially of rhomboidal outline, is provided with a centrally located elongated slot 6l, enlarged at its ends as shown at B8 and also provided with a central enlarged portion 69, these enlarged portions being arranged to iit over the three studs 'NJ projecting downwardly from the underside of the cap 63, these' studs passing through the enlarged parts 68 and 69 of slot 61 in the blade and then projecting through complementary openings pro-` vided in the blade table 62. The cap 63 is formed with ribs 1I located between and connecting the several studs 10, these ribs fitting into those portions of the slot 61 which lie between the enlarged parts 68 and 69 thereof and into a. complementary groove provided in the table 62. The central lug 10 on cap 63 is threaded in the usual way for reception into the upper end of the handle 6I. The general structure of the blade shown at 64 .is described and claimed in my co-pending application,`Serial No. 707,881, and is not claimed per se herein.
The under surface of the blade cap 63, instead of being wholly curved or formed with a continuous curved face, has a centrally curved surf ace 12 and two substantially flat; inclined surfaces 13 lying on either side of the central curved portion and extending from the edges of the curved surface to the parallel longitudinal` edges of the cap. These two flat surfaces 13 may besubstantially triangular in outline, this being dependent upon the width of the central curved portion. If the curved portion is made relatively narrow, the at.
portions may be trapezoidal, as clearly shown in Fig. 4.
The upper surface of the blade cap may conform to the lower surface, that is to say, it
may have a centrally curved portion and two at edge surfaces or itmay be rounded off into a continuous smooth curve.
- It will be noted that the central curved portion 12 on cap 63 lies at an oblique angle to the parallel edges of the cap 63 and extends thereby co-exten-` sively with the central slot 6l in the blade and with the axis of curvature of the blade when the blade is flexed in the holder. The upper surface of the blade' table 62 conforms substantially to the undersurface of the cap, that is to say, it has a central curved portion 'M similar to the curved surface l2 on the under face of cap '63,
primarily by the cap and it is therefore not essential that theupper surface of the table be of exactly the same formas the under surface of the cap.
When the blade is placed in the holder between the table and cap, the blade will be flexed about a line B-B (Fig. 7) comprising themedian line of the slot 6l, which is at an angle to the cutting edges and thus when the blade is clamped in position in the holder, the cutting edges will be inclined both with respect to a plane perpendicular to the handle and to a plane dened by the center line of the handle and the line B-B. 5 Since the flat, inclined surfaces 13 located adjacent to the parallel longitudinal edges of the cap 63 are plane surfaces, the portions of the blade adjacent to the cutting edges will necessarily lie against the same and these flat surfaces will hold the cutting edges in a straight line, so that the distance between the edge of the blade and the comb portions 66 on the guard will be maintained constantly uniform for the entire length of the blade to ensure a wholly satisfactory shave. i
While the structure herein described and claimed is shown as applied to arazor of the character disclosed in my co-pending application, Serial No. 707,881, wherein the blade is provided with parallel cutting edges, it win be obvious that the structure of the cap and table of the holder may be readily used in conjunction with a blade of truncated triangular outline having non-parallel edges of the character shown -in 2 my co-pending application, Serial No. 638,313 and with other types of blades capable of fitting and being satisfactorily used in a holder of the character described and claimed herein.
What I claim is:
1. In a razor of the character described, a blade table and a cap between which a wafer-type blade is clamped, the blade being received and ilexed therebetween about an axis of curvature extending along the blade at an oblique angle toits cutting edges, the cap having an under face formed with a curved surface extending co-extensively with the axis of curvature of the blade and having the longitudinal edges of said curved surface extending substantially parallel to the axis of curvature of the blade, said cap having flat surfaces of substantially trapezoidal outline on its under face extending from the termination of the curved surface thereon to the longitudinal edges of the cap, the table having cooperating at surfaces on its upper face, the flat surfaces on the cap and table co-operating in forming straight cutting edges on the blade and plane surfaces on` the blade in back of said cutting edges when the blade is clamped and flexed between the cap and table.
2. In a razor of the character described, a blade table and cap between which a wafer-type blade is clamped and flexed, the blade being flexed about an axis of curvature extending along the blade at an oblique angle to its cutting edges, the under face of the cap being provided with an elongated curved area extending at an oblique angle to the longitudinal edges of the cap, said cap having flat, substantially trapezoidal surfaces on its under face extending inwardly from its longitudinal edges toward the curved surface, whereby a blade clamped between the cap and table will conform in shape to the fiat and curved surfaces on the under face of the cap and the cutting edges of said blade will bestraight and portions of said blade in back of said cutting edges will be flat.
3. In a razor of the character described, a top, a blade table having guard portions, a blade clamped and flexed between said top and table, said blade having parallel cutting edges and a central slot lying at an oblique angle to the cutting edges, saidl top and table iiexing the blade between them so that the axis of curvature of the blade extends coextensively with the slot therein, a curved under face on the top extending along and lying co-extensively with the slot in the blade and having its longitudinal edges extending parallel to the axis of curvature of the blade, and flat triangulated inclined surfaces on the under face of the top overlying parts of the blade adjacent to the cutting edges thereon and causing said edges and portions of the blade rearwardly thereof to lie straight along the guard portions on the table.
4. In a razor of the character described, a blade table and aV cap between which a wafer-type blade is clamped, the blade being received and flexed therebetween about an axis of curvature extending along the blade at an oblique angle to the cutting edges thereon, the cap having an under face formed with a curved surface extending coextensively with the axis of curvature of' the blade, the cap having fiat trapezoidal surfaces on its under face extending from the side limits of curved surface thereon to the longitudinal edges of the cap, the table having co-operating, inclined fiat surfaces on its upper face. co-operating in the formation of straight cutting edges and flat surfaces rearwardly of said edges on the blade when the blade is flexed between the cap and table, the table also having a curved surface on its upper face situated between its at surfaces, said curved surface being of flatter curvature than the curved surface on the under face of the cap.
