17 Claims.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in grinders and more particularly to grinders for the traction surfaces of railway track rails and the like.
The principal object of the invention is to provide an apparatus or device of the character set forth, having novel abrasive means operatively associated therewith to permit relatively high grinding speeds e d at the same time effectually grind a substan" iy large area of the traction surface of the rail.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character set forth having novel abrsive means associated therewith in the form of an endless chain of abrasive or grinding bricks.
A further object of the invention is to provide device of the character set forth having novel abrasive comprising a continuous chain of pivotally connected bracket elements and abrasive elements removably mounted therein.
Certain other objects and features of the inventic-n and the details of the construction thereof are set forth hereinafter and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Heretofore, devices of the present character for grinding the surfaces of track rails have in almost every instance been provided with abrasive elements of the circular rotating disk or reciprocating brick type. By the present invention the provision of an endless chain of connected abrasive elements in the manner disclosed herein, permits maximum grinding speeds and at the same time enables a substantially large surface area of the track rails to be ground or finished.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, reference numerals l, I designate the longitudinal frame members of the customary railway track grinder disposed in parallel spaced relation adjacent one side of the machine as shown in Fig. 2, and members 2 are secured between said frame members I, transversely with respect thereto by means of bolts 3, the said members 2 being relatively spaced apart with respect to each other as shown in Fig. 1. Tubular sleeve bearings 4 are mounted vertically in the members 2 adjacent the 20 transverse ends thereof inwardly of the longitudinal frame members I of the grinding machine.
In the present instance rods 5 are slidably mounted in the sleeve bearings 4 and have their upper ends secured in a common element or plate 25 6 by means of bolts 1. Jack screws 8 are threaded in sleeves 9 mounted in the member 6 and have their lower ends connected to the transverse members 2. The threads of the jack screws 8 are meshed with the internal threads of worm 30 wheels 10, mounted at the upper side of the member 6, and each worm wheel I0 is arranged to engage a, worm ll mounted upon a shaft l2 which is journalled in bearings l3 secured to the top of the members 6 by means of one of each of the pairs of aforementioned bolts l. As shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings the shaft, 12 may be rotated from either end thereof by means of hand wheels I4.

In a grinding device, a main frame structure, a second frame structure supported by said main frame structure, means for adjusting the second frame vertically with respect to the main frame, drums rotatably mounted in the second frame structure in spaced relation to each other, sprocket associated with one of said drums and rotatable therewith, horizontal plates mounted on the second frame structure and extending tangentially between the drums at the top and bottom thereof, an endless chain of rollers arranged to travel on said drums and intermediate plates, an outer endless carrier including a plurality of brackets arranged to travel on the chain of rollers, pivots connecting the brackets of the outer carrier, means on certain of said pivots arranged for engagement by the teeth of the sprocket, upper and lower guide means, abrasive elements mounted in the brackets of the outer chain, and means for actuating the sprocket to drive the carrier.

In a grinding device, a main frame structure, a second frame structure supported by said main frame structure, means for adjusting the second frame vertically with respect to the main frame, drums rotatably mounted in the second frame structure in spaced relation toeach other, sprocket associated with one of said drums and rotatable therewith, horizontal plates mounted on the second frame structure and extending tangentially between the drums at the top and bottom thereof, an endless chain of rollers arranged to travel on said drums and intermediate plates, an outer endless carrier including a plurality of brackets arranged to travel on the chain of rollers, pivots connecting the brackets of said outer carrier, means on certain of said pivots arranged for engagement by the teeth of the sprocket, abrasive elements mounted in the brackets of the outer chain, and means for actuating the sprocket to drive the carrier.

In a grinding device, a main frame struc ture, a second frame structure supported by said main frame structure, means for adjusting the second frame vertically with respect to the main frame, drums rotatably mounted in the second frame structure in spaced relation to each other, sprocket associated with one of said drums and rotatable therewith, horizontal plates mounted on the second frame structure and extending tangentially between the drums at the top and bottom thereof, an endless chain of rollers arranged to travel on said drums and intermediate plates, an outer endless carrier including a plurality of brackets arranged to travel on the chain of rollers, pivots connecting the brackets in the outer carrier, upper and lower guide means, means mounted on certain of said pivot pins arranged to cooperate with said guide means, abrasive elements mounted in the brackets of the outer chain, and means for actuating the sprocket to drive the carrier.

In a grinding device, a main frame structure, a second frame structure supported by said main frame structure, means for adjusting the second frame vertically with respect to the main frame, drums rotatably mounted in the second frame structure in spaced relation to each other, sprockets associated with said drums and rotatable therewith, horizontal plates mounted on the second frame structure and extending tangentially between the drums at the top and bottom thereof, an endless carrier including a plurality of brackets arranged to travel about the drums, pivots connecting the brackets in the carrier, means on certain of said pivots arranged for engagement by the teeth of the sprockets, upper and lower guide means, means mounted on certain of said pivot pins arranged to cooperate with said guide means, abrasive elements mounted in the brackets of the carrier, and means for actuating at least one of the drums and its associated sprocket to drive the carrier.

In a grinding device a main frame structure, a second frame structure supported by said main frame structure, means for adjusting the second frame vertically with respect to the main frame, drums rotatably mounted in the second frame structure in spaced relation to each other, horizontal plates mounted on the second frame structure and extending tangentially between the drums at the top and bottom thereof, an endless chain of rollers arranged to travel on said drums and intermediate plates, an outer endless carrier including a plurality of brackets arranged to travel on the chain of rollers, pivots connecting the brackets in the outer carrier, upper and lower guide means, means mounted on certain of said pivot pins arranged tocooperate with said guide means, abrasive elements mounted in the brackets of the outer chain, and means for actuating at least one of the drums to drive the carrier.

In a grinding device, a main frame structure, a second frame structure supported by said main frame structure, drums rotatably mounted in the second frame structure in spaced relation to each other, a sprocket associated with one of said drums and rotatable therewith, horizontal plates mounted on the second frame structure and extending tangentially between the drums at the top and bottom thereof, an endless chain of rollers arranged to travel on said drums and intermediate plates, an outer endless carrier including a plurality of brackets arranged to travel on the chain of rollers, pivots connecting the brackets in the outer carrier, means on certain of said pivots arranged for engagement by the teeth of the sprocket, upper and lower guide means, means mounted on certain of said pivot pins arranged to cooperate with said guide means, abrasive elements mounted in the brackets of the outer chain, and means for acuating the sprocket to drive the carrier.

In a grinding device, a main frame structure, a second frame structure supported by said main frame structure, means for adjusting the second frame vertically with respect to the main frame, drums rotatably mounted in the second frame structure in spaced relation to each other, sprocket associated with one of said drums and rotatable therewith, horizontal plates mounted on the second frame structure and extending tangentially between the drums at the top and bottom thereof, an endless chain of rollers arranged to travel on said drums and intermediate plates, an outer endless carrier including a plurality of brackets arranged to travel on the chain of rollers, pivots connecting the brackets in the outer carrier, means on certain of said pivots arranged for engagement by the teeth of the sprocket, upper and lower guide means, means mounted on certain of said. pivot pins arranged to cooperate With said guide means, abrasive elements mounted in thebrackets of the outer chain, and means for actuating the sprocket to drive the carrier.
9. In a grinding device, the combination with drums rotatably mounted in spaced relation to 10. In a grinding device the combination with drums rotatably mounted in spaced relation to each other, of sprockets associated with said drums and rotatable therewith, horizontal plates extending tangentially between the drums at the top and bottom thereof, an endless carrier arranged to travel about the drums and said intermediate plates, means onsaid endless carrier arranged for engagement by the teeth of the sprockets, guide means, means on certain of :said means engaged by the teeth of the sprockets arranged to cooperate with said guide means,'and means for actuating at least one of thedrums and associated sprocket to drive the carrier.

In a grinding device the combination with V drums rotatably mounted in spaced relation to each other, of sprockets associated with said rums and rotatable therewith, horizontal plates extending tangentially between the drums at the top and bottom thereof, an endless chain of rollers arranged to travel on the drums and said intermediate plates, an outer endless carrier arranged to travel on said chain of rollers, means on said endless carrier arranged for engagement by the teeth'of the sprockets, guide means, means on certain of said means engaged by the teeth of the sprockets arranged to cooperate with said guide means, and meansiior actuating at least one of the drums and associated sprocket to drive the carrier.

A grinding device including a pair of members mounted in spaced relation and having drum surfaces, a chain of rollers surrounding said members and adapted to ride on said surfaces, an endless carrier adapted to ride on the rollers of said chain, abrasive means carried by said carrier, and means engaging said carrier to efiect movement thereof.

A grinding device including a pair of members mounted in spaced relation and having drum surfaces, a chain of, rollers surrounding said members and adapted to ride on said surfacea'an endless carrier adapted to ride on the rollers of said chain, the ,carrierincluding a plurality of brackets with pivot means therebetween, abrasive means carriedrby said brackets, and means for actuating the carrier including a driving element engaging said pivot means. i V

For an endless abrasive-brick carrier, a bracket member having means for pivotal attachment thereto with other similar brackets in the carrier, an abrasive device comprising abrasive material and a supporting member, the supporting and bracket members being provided with separable interlocking portions, whereby the abrasive device may be removed from the bracket member, and a displaceable element normally preventing separation of said bracket and supporting members.

In a machine for grinding a rail of a trackway, a frame structure for supporting the machine in rail grinding position, a pair of spaced support members adjustably carried by the frame structure for movement toward and away from the rail to be ground, an endless carrier surrounding said members, a series of separate abrasive devices mounted on the carrier, the support members being curved to provide curved rims in the path of movement of the carrier, guide means providing a straight run for the carrier adjacent said rail and below a' position of tangency with respect to the curved runs,v an end of said guide means being terminated in spaced relation with respect to a curved run to 'providea run which is inclined with respect to the rail at a low angle, and guide means for the inclined vide curved runs in the path of movement of the carrier, guide means providing a straight run for the carrier adjacent said rail and below a position of tangency with respect to the curved runs, an end of said guide means beingterminated in spaced relation with respect to a c'urved'run to provide a run which is inclined with respect to the rail at a low angle, and guide means for the ins clined run of said carrier.
