DOOR HANDLE Filed Feb. 27, 1936 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 ATTORNEYS Patented Jan. 19, 1937 UNITED. STAT S PATENT." OFFICE noon HANDLE Gilbert J. Haan, Jr Grand Rapids, Mich, assignor to Keeler Brass Company, Grand Bapids, Mich.
Application February '21, 1936, Serial No. 68,019
12 Claims; (01. 292-347) Second, to provide a handle having these adv w vantages which is attractive in appearance.
Third, to provide an improved handle structure which is very strong and rigid and at the same time made mainly of sheet metal parts and one which is very economical in structure.
' Objects relating to details and economies 'of the invention will appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined and pointed out in the claims.
Preferred embodiments of the invention are an illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in
which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of my door handle associated with its escutcheon. v
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view mainly in longitudinal section on line 2-2 of Fig. 3.
' Fig. 3 is an elevation with the outer casing re- ,moved and parts broken away and sectioned. on
line 33 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 4 is a transverse section on line 4-4 of so Figs. 2 and 3.
Fig. 5 is a view'with the parts mainly in disassembled form or relation.
Fig. 6 is an inside view of a modified embodimerit of my invention, the spindle being shown 35 in section. 1 Fig. 7 is an enlarged fragmentary view mainly in section on line-i-i of Fig. 6.
Fig. 8 is an enlarged transverse section on line 8--B of Fig. 6.
Fig. 9 v is a longitudinal section of a modified form of back in which the two back members as shown in the other figures are formed as one stamping.
In the embodiments of my invention illustrated, 45 the spindle I is bent at its outer end to provide the laterally disposed curved arm 2 which is of substantial length. I provide a shell-like body member 3 of channel cross section and longitudinally curved and preferably tapered to provide 60 the desired taper or shape to the handle.
This body member is formed as a sheet metal stamping and has inwardly oifset struck opposed insets 4, 4 and 5, 5 in its side walls, these inset portions abutting against and being spot-welded 5 to the sides of the arm of the spindle as best shown in Figs. 3 and 4. At each of these insets, portions i are left at the bottom, of the recesses formed by theinsets, the outer surfaces oi these portions 1 being flush with the sides of the body member to form continuous supports for the thin 5 shell or casing 8 which is conformed to fit closely the outline of this body member, the shell or casing being made of material that can be suitably finished while the body membermay be unfinished or formed as a plain or rough sheet metal 10 stamping.
The ornamental and stiffening rib 9 is preferably provided in the body member and a nesting rib I0 is preferably provided in the casing. The back member ii is formed with inwardly offset flanges I? on its edges. This back member is also curved. I
A complementary base member I3 is provided,
,this base member being cup-shaped and having fa spherically curved end 44 adapted to fit and rotate within the opening I 5 of the escutcheon Hi. This base member has laterally turned fianges I'I onits side and rear edges abutting against the edge of the body member. The members I I and it have inturned abutting flanges l8 and I9 respectively on theirabutting edges. The casing or shell 8 has inturned flanges 2. .in clamping engagement with the inset flanges of the back members and I3. r
The escutcheon is suitably shaped to provide 3( a housing for the thrust washers 21 arranged between the spring housing 22 and the swiveling or bearlng portion oi the base member i3, the spring 23 in the housing 22 acting ta-prevent rattling and to yieldingly hold the handle in the socket provided therefor by the escutcheon.
member, and casing in the same-manner as in the embodiment shown in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive and, therefore, an assembled handle with this back member is not illustrated.
In the embodiment of my invention shown in" Figs. 6, 7, and 8, the back member H is omitted entirely, a base member 26 corresponding to the base member i3 being provided. The casing 21 is provided with bottom portions 28 which are folded below the arm on the spindle, these portions 28 in themselves constituting a back, the edges of the portions being brought together in abutting relation at 29. Other than the omission of the back member, the structure is, as stated. substantially that of Figs. 1 to 5.
The-handle of all these embodiments is without base or shank projections or prongs. At the same time it is attractive in appearance and is of strong and rigid construction even though made mainly of sheet metal.
i I have not attempted to illustrate all of the embodiments and modifications which I contemplate as it is believed that this disclosure will enable those skilled in the art to embody or adapt my improvements as may'be desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
