3 Claims.
This present invention relates to improvements in a grate and appertains particularly to a rocker grate wherein the grate bars are oscillated or dumped by a common shaker bar continuously 5 attached thereto.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a. grate that is readily adjustable to serve in one position as a coal stove grate and in another as a wood stove grate, no extra parts being required in either case.
A further object of the invention is to provide a grate having oscillating grate bars rocking in invertible side frames that allow of the suspension of the grate bars at two alternative levels and changeable from one position to another without screws or bolts or other similar fastenings that wouldburn or rust.
A further object of the invention is to provide a convertible grate assembly that is readily transformed by inverting the grate bar supports and whose shaker bar may be correspondingly inverted, its handle end being offset to compensate for the variance of the grate bar positions so as to maintain a common level.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a grate assembly of the nature and for the purposes described that is characterized by structural simplicity, durable convertibility and low cost of construction and installation whereby the same is rendered commercially desirable.
To the accomplishment of these and related objects as shall become apparent as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as shall be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
The invention will be best understood and can be more clearly described when reference is had to the drawing forming a part of this disclosure wherein like characters indicate like parts thoughout the several views.

Figure 3 is a transverse vertical section as taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2; and
Figure 4 is a perspective elevation of the frame members in position prior to assembly with the stove body in proper relation thereto shown in section.
(Cl. 12S-154) In this invention, the stove body 5, of any desired conventional design, has its re box provided with an inwardly extending lateral ridge or tongue 6 across the bottom thereof at both ends as a dividing line between the fire box and 5 the ash pit and on opposite sides of the fire box near both ends a short tongue 'I rises from the top level of the end ridges 6. These transverse ridges 6 and vertical tongues 'i are to support the forward and rear end grate frame members 8 10 each provided with a longitudinally extending shoulder forming lug 9 on both ends at the bottom terminally provided with a vertical groove I0 and from whose upper side a central dowel pin II rises. The upper edge of these end members 8 15 is beveled downwards on the inside, as at I2. Side frame members I3 are beveled oppositely on upper and lower edges and each have a longitudinal lug I4 at both ends between top and bottom edges but preferably nearer one edge than the 20 other, these lugs having a vertical bore I5 to receive the dowel pins II as they rest on the shoulder lugs 9 of the end frame members 8. The end frame members 8 rest on the transverse edges 6 and are held in position against displacement or inward collapse by the vertical tongues 'I their grooved lugs 9 engage while the side frame members I3 are in turn supported by their bored lugs I4 dropping over the pins II so that they rest on the shoulders or lugs 9 of the end frame 30 members 8 and are thus held rigidly in position While being always readily removable vertically without dislodging the said end frame members.
The grate bars I6 extend transversely, have rounded tops I'I and each an integral depending 35 arm I8 transversely perforated near the bottom.
A longitudinally extending trunnion I9 centrally of each end of the grate bar I6 seats in an opening 20 in a horizontal row of such in the side frame members I3. These horizontal rows 40 of openings 20 are nearer one edge (the upper edge in the illustrations) of the side frames than the other so that the inverting of the said side frames I3 varies the level at which Said rows of holes occur and in which said grate bars 45 are supported.
A shaker bar 2l has spaced perforations. throughout its length to register with the perforations in the depending arms I8 of the grate bars and through which registering pairs of per- 50 forations split pin fastening members 22 or the like extend. The forward end of the shaker bar 2| is vertically offset as at 23 and extending out through and opening in the stove 5 is terminally provided with a suitable handle member 24, the 55 distance of its oiset being half the drop in the level of the grate bars produced by inverting the side frames.
When this stove is to be used as a wood stove, the side frame members are positioned to carry their grate bar trunnion openings at the upper level as shown in the drawing, with the outer end of the shaker bar downwardly oifset and when desired to transform the stove into a coal burner the shaker bar is disconnected and the grate bars lifted out with the side frame members, while the end frame members are left undisturbed, and the side frame members inverted, the grate barsA re-assembled and again positioned in the re box with the side frames supported as in the previous instance on the end frames but in inverted position thereby dropping the top of thegrate bars to the position shown in dotted outline in Figure 2, when the shaker bar, similarly inverted so that its forward end is now offset upwardly, is again connected by the split pins to the grate bar arms.
From the foregoing description taken in oonnection with the accompanying drawing, it will be manifest that a grate is provided that will fulfil all the necessary requirements of such a .device but as many changes could be made in the above description and many apparently widely different embodiments of the invention may be constructed within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all matters contained in the said accompanying specification and drawing,l shall be interpreted as illustrative and'not in a limitative or restrictive sense.
. Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:-
1. A grate comprising in combination with a stove, end frame members, means on said stove to support the same, other means on said stove to prevent their inward collapse, invertible side frame members on said end frame members removable vertically therefrom and adapted to be Ysupported in either position thereon and grate bars carried by said side frame members nearer one horizontal edge thereof so that the vertical position of said grate bars is changed on the inverting of said side frame members.
2. A grate in combination with a stove having a re box with an open top and ridges across opposite ends of said box, removable end frame members resting on said ridges, side frame members supported on said end frame members and removable independently thereof and invertible with respect thereto, grate bars, and means nearer one horizontal edge of said side frame members for supporting said grate bars, whereby the level of said grate bars may be varied by inverting said side frame members.
3. A grate comprising in combination with a stove, transverse ridges on the inside ends of the re box, vertical tongues on the sides of the fire box near the ends and rising from the top of said end ridges, end frame members resting on said ridges, end lugs on said end frame members terminally grooved vertically to engage said vertical tongues, side frame members having end lugs adapted to rest on the end lugs of said end frame members, connecting means between said end frame and side frame lugs, rocker grates mounted for oscillation in said side frames', a depending arm from each of said rocker grates and a shaker bar connected to said arms;
