This invention relates to excavating machines and more particularly to a machine for digging trenches and the like wherein the excavating means is carried by a boom laterally offset from the power machine.
An object is to provide a simple arrangement wherein a tractor may be readily mounted on the machine and dismounted therefrom in order to provide transporting means for the machine. A further object is the provision of a simple and inexpensive arrangement for deriving power from the tractor for moving the machine and operating the excavating means.
The invention contemplates the provision of an excavator, including a supporting deck,
wherein a boom is offset with respect to the deck whereby the machine may be positioned on solid ground adjacent the portion to be excavated with the boom extending over said portion in such a manner as to provide greater con--V venience and eiiiciency of operation. The invention also includes cable means for operating an excavating bucket in association with the boom and for swinging the boom about a vertical axis, the cable means being driven from a y single shaft, which in turn is driven by power supplied by the tractor. It also includes means for propelling the machine along the line of work.
' The invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation with certain parts removed for clarity of illustration,

Figure 4 is a sectional view showing tractor mounting.
In the drawings, I represents a supporting deck for the machine mounted on wheels 2, 3 is a boom, 9 a bucket of usual construction connected to the boom 3 and 5 a tractor mounted on deck I and having its rear driving wheelsl 6 jacked up by means of jacks I for furnishing the motive power for the machine.
The boom is pivotallysecured at its lower end to a fitting 8 carried by a turntable 9 pivotally mounted at the base of a mast I0 which is mounted in an offset position with respect to deck I, on a projecting end of a horizontal beam Ii carried by and extending transversely across deck Land its upper end is tied by means of a cable I2 to a casting I2' pivotally mounted at the top of mast I0.
The mast I0 is supported by apair of transverse rigid stays I3 -secured to beam II and to a bracket I4 adjacent the top of the mast, and by upper and lower back stays I5 anchored to the deck.
An Outrigger I6 having a hinged connection with the bracket Iis adapted to prevent any overturning movement of the machine due to the offset position of the boom.
The driving mechanism of the machinel includes a jack shaft I'I journalled in bearings I8 .mounted on frame members I9 and 20 and driven by means of chains 2I, sprockets22 bolted to the drive wheels 6 of the tractor and corresponding sprockets 23 mounted on the jack shaft. A drum shaft 24, journaled in bearings 25 mounted on a frame member 29 and frame member I9, respectively, is driven by a chain 2l and sprockets 28 carried by the drum shaft and the jack shaft. A loading drum 29 and a hoisting drum 30 are mountedon the shaft 24 for driving connection therewith by means of clutches 3I and 32 provided with operating'levers 3| and 32', respectively. Any suitable braking means may be provided for each of drums 29 and 30 and operating levers therefor are indicated at 29 and 30'. A` pair of bevel gears 33 are also mounted on shaft 24 for driving connection therewith by meansof clutches 39 provided with an operating lever 34 and are in meshing engagement with a bevel gear 35 keyed to a short verticalshaft 36 mounted on deck I. A swing drum 31 is also keyed to shaft 36 and suitable braking means therefor may be pro- ;ided, a brake operating lever being indicated at Swinging of the boom is effected by lmeans of a cable connection 38 between the drum 3l and turntable 9.
Loading of bucket 4 is effected by means of a cable 39 coiled on drum 29 and extending through a horizontally positioned sheave 40 at .the side of deck I, thence through a second horizontal sheave 4I mounted in a block adjacent the foot of mast I0 and over a vertical sheave 42 mounted in a block carried by turntable 9 to a connection on bucket 4, as shown. v
Hoisting of the bucket is accomplished by means of acable 43 coiled on drum 30 and extending through a sheave 44 carried by a block w loosely mounted 0n bracket I4 at the top of mast I0, thence through a sheave 45 mounted at the end of boom 3 to a connection on the bucket.
Means, for propelling the machine along the line of work, include a cable 46 coiled on a drum 41 mounted on an extension of jack shaft l1 journalled in a transverse frame member 48.
lThe drum 41 is mounted for driving connection with shaft l1 by means of a clutch 49 provided with an operating lever 50. The free end of cable 46 is led through a vertical sheave 5I mounted A between the frame members 20 and 48,` thence through a horizontal sheave 52 mounted on frame member 48 and through a sheave 53, which is tied by a cable 54 to any suitable anchor, to a connection on a hand steering device 55.
The operation of the machine will be apparent from the foregoing description. The machine may be placed on solid ground adjacent the line of the trench to be excavated, as indicated at 5B,

the axis of said first-mentioned drums, a common driving shaft adapted to impart rotation to each of said drums and a second shaft adapted to be driven by the tractor and having a driving connection with said first mentioned shaft.

In a tractor-driven excavating machine including a supporting deck therefor, a'boom and a bucket, loading and hoisting means for the bucket comprising a driven shaft', a pair of drums mounted on said shaft, clutchesassociated with said shaft and drums, and, actuating cables operatively connecting said drums and bucket, and driving means for said driven shaft comprising a pair of sprockets bolted to the vrear driving wheels of the tractor, chain driving means connecting said sprockets to a second shaft and additional chain driving means` connecting said second shaft to the driven shaft.
3. A tractor-driven,excavating machine as dened. in claim 2, wherein means is provided for swinging said boom about a vertical axis, said means comprising a mast, atting rotatably mounted on the mast and to which' the boom is secured and means for rotating the fitting con` sisting of a turntable to which the fitting is secured, a drum mounted on a shaft at right angles to said driven-shaft and adapted to be rotated thereby and a cable connecting the turntable and last-mentioned drum.

In a tractor-driven excavating machine in- 2,oe2,744 o cluding a supporting deck therefor, a boom mounted in an offset position with respect to the deck substantially over the line of work of the machine, and mounting means for said boom comprising a laterally extending beam carried by the deck, a mast mounted on the extended end of said beam, a fitting rotatably mounted at the base of said mast and pivotally carrying said boom and an Outrigger secured to the top of said mast and extending across the line of work to prevent overturning movement of the machine due to the offset position of the'boom.

In a tractor-driven excavating machine including a supporting deck therefor, a boom mounted in an offset position with respect to the deck substantially over the line of work of the machine, mounting means for said boom comprising a laterally extending beam lcarried by the deck, a mast mounted on the extended end of said beam, a turntable rotatably mounted at the base of said mast, a fitting secured to said turntable and pivotally carrying the boom, y
and an Outrigger secured tothe top of said mast and extending across. the line of work to prevent overturning movement of the machine due to the offset position of the boom, and means for swinging said boom about the axis of said mast including a drum mounted about a vertical axis on the deck, an actuating cable connecting the drum and turntable and means for rotating the drum.

In a tractor-drivenl excavating machine including a supporting deck therefor, a boom and a bucket, said boom being mounted in an offset position Withrespect to the deck substantially over the line of work of the machine, mounting means for said boom comprising a laterally extending beam carried by the deck, a mast mounted on the extended end of said beam,
`a turntable rotatably mounted at the base of said mast, a fitting secured to the turntable and pivotally carrying the boom, and an Outrigger sefcured to the top of the mast and extending across the line of work to prevent overturning movement o'fnthe machine due to the offset posifined in claim 2, wherein means is provided forl propelling said machine along its line of work,
said means comprising a drum mounted coaxially of -said second shaft, a clutch adapted to effect driving engagement between said second shaft and last mentioned drum, anchor means for the machine, and an actuating cable leading from said anchor means to said last `mentioned drum.
