It will readily be seen that when the springs 39 are in the dotted line position a comparatively small amount of tension will be placed between the members I9 and 26, and that when the springs 30 are in their solid line position a comparatively large amount of tension will be applied to the member 26 for gripping a hat brim between the said members [9 and 26. The member 21 also serves to limit the upward movement of the brim when placed in the clamps.
In the actual operation of the hat holder the operator first moves the springs 30 to their dotted line position and then slips the hat brim between the members l9 and 26, when in its dotted line position, to support the weight of the hat. The operator then moves the yoke 32 downwardly, firmly gripping the hat brim in position. This entire operation may be accomplished with the hand supporting the hat, thus eliminating the necessity of having to use both hands to place the hat in position. The hat brim is easily inserted between the members l9 and 26 when the member 26 is under minimum tension. When under maximum tension the hat is firmly held against being blown away by excessive currents of air passing through the automobile while in motion.
Sometimes it is desired to furnish a combination hat holder and an assist cor-d, in which case an assist cord is formed on the annular member l1. Other times it is desirable to sell the hat holder and assist cord separately so as to permit the purchaser to obtain either the assist cord or the hat holder, or both, in which case I have provided a disc 33 having an opening 34 slightly above its center, and a downwardly extending flange 35 formed on its lower end, said flange having an opening 36 toprovide an annular support 31, to which the assist cord or strap 38 may be secured in the usual manner. The disc 33 is simply placed in the recess l8 between the member l and the frame ID. A screw 39 is then placed through an opening 40 formed in the flange l5, and through the opening 34 into the frame It), thus pivotally supporting the disc 33 and the assist cord so as to permit the assist cord toswing laterally, as well as forwardly and rearwardly. The screw 39 serves to assist in supporting the body H as well as the disc 33. Any strains applied to the assist cord are applied directly to the screw 39, which is partly supported in position by means of the screw I4, thus providing means for firmly supporting the assist cord.
In Figure 8 I have illustrated a modified form of assist cord, the upper end of which is provided with a flattened portion 44 having an opening 45 for receiving the screw 39. The form illustrated in Figure 8 eliminates the necessity of the plate 33.
A filler block 46 is provided to be placed in the notch I8 when it is desired to use the device as a hat hanger only, said filler block having an opening 41 for receiving the screw 39, the filler block being for ornamental purposes only.
Sometimes it is desirable to use a coat hanger in connection with the hat hang-er, instead of the assist cord, in which case I have provided a disc 4|, having an opening 42 above its center and a hook 43 formed on its lower end for supporting" a coat or similar article, the disc 41 being mounted on the screw 39 in place of the disc 33, in the manner clearly illustrated in Figures 1 and 2.
Thus, it will be seen I have provided a hat;
hanger which may be cheaply constructed and in which a hat may be easily and quickly placed in position by the use of one hand, and after being placed in position may be firmly clamped therein, and at the same time provide in connection therewith means whereby an assist cord or coat hanger may be used in connection with the hat hanger at the will of the purchaser, thus providing a series of articles that may be combined together in various ways to suit the requirement of various purchasers. I find that oftentimes the purchaser may desire two or more hat hangers in a single automobile, and at the same time only one assist cord is desired, sometimes combining a hat hanger and assist cord, and oftentimes another hat hanger and a coat hanger together.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a device of the class described, an upright body portion having a forwardly extending bracket at its upper end; a clamping pad carried by said body; an arcuate clamping arm having one end pivotally connected to the free end of said forwardly extending bracket, the lower end of said arm having a clamping portion adjacent to the said pad; a yoke slidably mounted on the arcuate portion of said clamping arm; and yieldable means supporting said yoke mounted to swing about the center of said arcuate portion whereby the tension between said pad and said clamping member may be varied by sliding said yoke over the arcuate portion of said clamping arm, toward and from its pivoted end.

In a device of the class described, an upright 1 body portion having a forwardly extending bracket at its upper end and an opening in its central portion; a clamping pad carried by said body; an arcuate clamping arm having one end pivotally connected to the free end of said forwardly extending bracket, the lower end of said arm having a clamping portion supported adjacent to said pad and an inwardly extending portion terminating in .said opening to limit the swinging movement of said arm; a yoke slidably mounted; on the arcuate portion of said clamping arm; and yieldable means supporting said yoke mounted to swing about the center of said arcuate portion whereby the tension between said pad and said clamping member may be varied by sliding said yoke over the arcuate portion of said clamping arm, toward and from its pivoted end.
3.
