COOKING STOVE Filed Jan. 20, 1936 v 'Inventor Omar fir Attorney Patented Nov. 10, 193
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
The present invention relates to improvements in cooking stoves.
An object of the invention is the provision of a cooking stove having an oven mounted so as to be selectively movable to a heating or to a non-heating position with respect to the stove burners.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a stove having an oven mounted thereon so as to be slidable to a position overlying the burners or to a position offset from the said burners.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a stove of the aforesaid character embodying mechanism whereby the oven may be quickly and easily moved into selected position.
Still another object of the invention is the provision of a stove of the above character wherein the oven movement is effected by foot pressure and by spring means.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent as the description progresses.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and in which like reference characters are employed to designate corresponding parts throughout the same:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a stove, showing the oven in offset non-heating position,
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the same,
Figure 3 is a top plan View showing the oven in a forward heating position,
Figure 4 is a side elevational view showing the oven in offset position in full lines and in forwardly extended heating position in dotted lines,
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the oven supporting and actuating mechanism, and
Figure 6 is a fragmentary vertical section showing the construction of the oven bottom.
Referring to the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention, l generally designates the body of the stove equipped, in the pres ent instance, with a pair of oil burners in the top thereof and supported on legs II.
To the top of the stove body I0 is connected a U-shaped horizontal frame l3 embodying transversely extending side bars M and a longitudinal rear bar l5. Each of the side bars I4 is formed with a flange It provided with holes so that the forward portions of these bars may be secured horizontally on the end margins of the stove body top, while the remaining portions of the bars project rearwardly thereof. Thus, the sides of the frame are disposed 'to form guide tracks While the rear bar provides a stop element.
The rearwardly extending portion of the frame I3 is supported on the stove back by means of a pair of brace bars l8 the upper ends of which are connected to therear frame bar 15, adjacent the ends. The're'ar' portion of the frame may also be braced by" an extensible bracing standard l8 connecting with the rear bar l5 and extending to the floor. The lower extremity of each brace bar I 8 is secured to a bracket 29 formed with flanges for connection with the lower rear portion of the stove. The brackets M are also formed with aligned bearing sleeves 2| in which are journalled the end portions of a horizontally disposed shaft 22.
On the frame I3 is mounted a horizontally movable carriage 24 embodying a rectangular shaped frame preferably formed of angle-iron designed to support thereon a stove oven 25. To the end sections of the carriage frame 24 are rotatably connected grooved rollers 26 disposed to engage and roll on the side portions I4 of the frame I3.
Pivotally connected to the carriage 24 preferably to the spindles of the front rollers 26, at each side of the carriage, is a lever 28 extending rearwardly from the pivot connection. To the rear extremityof each of the two levers 28 is pivotally connected the upper end of an arm 29. The lower end of each arm 29 is formed with a sleeve 3!! fixed on each end of the shaft 22 so that rotary operation of the shaft will cause the arms 29 and the levers 28 to roll the carriage 24 horizontally on the frame I3.
The actuating shaft 22 is selectively rotated by means of an angular crank 32 having a sleeve 33 formed on the rear end fixed on the shaft and formed at the forward end with a forwardly projecting foot pedal 34. To the forward portion of the crank 32 is connected the lower hooked end of a coiled tension spring 35, the upper end of the spring being fastened to the hook 35 on the upper front portion of the stove body. A catch plate 3'! secured to the lower front portion of the stove is operable to engage the crank 32 for releasably holding the carriage in a forward heating position.
As shown to advantage at Figure 6, the bottom of the oven casing 25 is opened. Within the lower portion of the oven casing is provided a raised horizontal shelf below which is provided a shutter structure 4|. The shutter comprises a plurality of shutter slats 42 pivotally mounted in parallel positions within the lower portion of the oven and connected by a common oper ating rod 43. At one end, the rod 43 connects with an actuating crank 44. Thus, this shutter construction will enable the slats 42 to be disposed in downwardly approximately horizontal overlapping positions to close the bottom of the oven or to raised open positions.
The apparatus operates as follows:
When it is desired to move the oven from its rearwardly retracted non-heating position, as shown at Figures 1 and 2, the operator depresses the pedal 34 with the foot causing the arm and lever mechanism to roll the carriage 24 and oven 25 resting thereon to a forward position so that the oven will overlie the stove burners. When the crank is fully depressed, it will automatically engage the lower edge of the catch plate 31 to retain the oven in heating position until it is desired to move the same. When, upon completion of the cooking operation, it is desired to restore the oven to a retracted non-heating position, the crank is moved laterally to disengage the catch plate 31 and the spring 35 automatically actuates the mechanism to roll the oven to a rearwardly offset position away from the stove burners.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herein shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes as to the shape, size and arrangement of parts may beresorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:-
1. In a stove, a body having burners in the top, an oven supporting carriage, a frame upon which said carriage is adapted to move, depressible foot operable mechanism for horizontally shifting the carriage to dispose the oven over the burners, spring means for urging the carriage to dispose the oven at a position offset from the burners and retaining means for holding the foot mechanism depressed when the oven is to be disposed in position over the burners.
2. In a stove, a body having burners in the top, side rails extending from the front of said top to a distance behind the same at the sides thereof, an oven supporting carriage movable on said rails, a spring adapted to urge said carriage away from the burners to the back of the rails, foot operable mechanism for shifting the carriage forward over the burners against the action of the spring, and means for retaining said mechanism in position when it is desired to leave the carriage over the burners.
OMER NORMAND.
