1 Claim.
The object of the invention is to provide a wrench in which the jaws are relatively movable to provide for adjustment for various size nuts and to accomplish such adjustment by the one hand in which the wrench is carried so that the jaw setting operation may be readily accomplished where the use of two hands is impossible or inconvenient; and to provide a wrench of the kind indicated which is of simple form and susceptible of cheap manufacture.
With this object in view, the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts, of which a. preferred embodiment is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a wrench constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is an edge elevational view.
Figure 3 is a sectional view on the plane indicated by the line 3--3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a sectional view on the plane indicated by the line 4-4 of Figure 1.
While the invention is shown incorporated in the conventional form of wrench in which the stationary jaw I is integral with the combined shank and handle l I, it is applicable to any other form of wrench in which turning movement is employed to adjust the movable jaw I2 toward and away from the stationary jaw. In the illustrated embodiment showing the conventional form of wrench, the shank H is provided on the one edge with the rack teeth M of the proper inclination to be engaged with the thread of the worm I5, the latter being disposed in an opening in the jaw l2, so as to rotate freely therein, and to this end being carried on a stem [6 arranged parallel with the shank II, the stem extending through the jaw [2 on opposite sides of the opening to provide journal portions for the stem. The stem is substantially coextensive in length with the combined shank and handle portion l l and in the handle area passes through a slide I! which is adapted for movement over the shank ll throughout the handle area, which Cir 1935, Serial No. 33,165
is graduated in fractions of an inch as indicated at [8.
The stem I6 is angularly but not axially movable with respect to the slide ll, said stem having a collar l9 abutting the slide on one end and a ferruled portion 20 of a handle 2| abutting the slideon the opposite end. The handle 2| is of the general form of the conventional screw driver handle and its diameter is greater than the thickness of the shank II, so that it may be readily grasped by the fingers of the hand in which the handle portion of the shank II is carried.
The scale [8 formed on the handle area of the shank ll provides, in connection with the slide ii, an indicator from which the spacing of the jaws H and 12 may be determined.
The wrench when held in the hand may be readily adjusted by manipulation of the fingers on the handle 2|, so that in the event the user must employ one hand to hold the work being operated upon, he may make the necessary jaw adjustment readily with the other hand.
The invention having been described, what is claimed as new and useful is:
A wrench comprising fixed and movable jaws, a combined shank and handle member with which the former jaw is fixedly connected and on which the latter is slidably mounted, a rotary member carried by the movable jaw and having positive operative connection with the shank to traverse the latter and effect movement of the jaw along the shank, a stem fixed with respect to said rotary member and paralleling the shank, and a handle carried at the end of the stem adjacent the handle area of the shank, the shank being formed with a scale graduated in linear units and having a slide mounted thereon movable over the scale, the slide being operatively connected with the stem to permit relative angular movement between it and the stem but to preclude relative axial movement between the two.
