UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
L. LEAVENWORTH, OF TRUMANSBURG, NEW YORK.
CORN-HUSKER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 20,568, dated June 15, 18-58.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LUoIUs LEAvENwoRTH, of Trnmansburg, county of Tompkins, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Machine for Husking Corn; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 represents the machine complete.
Letters a, a, represent the chair; 7), b, the arms; 0, 0, the rollers on the pins.
Letter cl represents the lever with the lower end fastened by the hinge f to the frame 6.
Letter 9 represents the chisel or cutter.
The frame work or foundation of my machine consists of a strong chair or seat with firm arms or sides. Upon forward extremity of the right arm or side on its upper surface I place two upright standards or pins, each about three inches high. Upon the pins or standards I place two rollers; the roller upon the inner and back pin (which is about three inches inward and backward from the front pin or roller), I make concave to fit the form of the ear of corn to be husked. The upper three-fourths of the front and outer roller I make concave also, but the lower fourth I bevel off to allow the detached husks to pass more freely. The outer side of the arm close to the forward roller is also rounded off for the same purpose. Upon the right forward leg or standard of the chair or seat (or any other convenient part of the chair) I attach a lever usually by' a hinge joint. The lever usually is made so long that the middle of it shall be even with the rollers, and at that point the cutter or chisel is attached by any suitable device. The chisel is to be made curved or bent at right angles or nearly so, so that it may be fastened to the front side of the lever, in order that the edge of the lever back of cutter or chisel may be made thin to allow the ear to pass back of the lever.
The machine being thus constructed is to be operated by the person seated in the chair, laying hold of the ear to be husked with his left hand, placing it between the rollers (the stalk being above his hand,) and with his right hand forcing the lever forward by which motion the cutter is made to separate the cob from stalk without at the same time cutting off all the husks, and the motion of the lever forward being continued the chisel draws the husks forward and outward (the ear outward only as the inner and back roller prevents the ear from going forward). Thus the stalk and the husks still attached are deposited in front of the operator ready for binding, and the corn is discharged back of the moving lever through the cut ends of the husks into a basket or in a pile.
For the purpose of resting the arms, a similar device is placed on the other arm of the chair, in which case the corn is seized by the right and the lever moved by the left hand.
WVhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. Attaching to the arm or other part of the chair the two rollers or their equivalent in the relative position and for the purpose described.
2. I also claim the combination of the hinged lever, d, curved chisel, g, and rollers 0, 0, with a seat or chair in the manner and for the purpose described.
