The present invention relates to paper novelties and more particularly to advertising folders adapted for effecting extension of representations, etc. reproduced thereon.

An object of the invention is the provision of an improved folder of the character referred to in which representations reproduced thereon are extended from the folder when the same is opened.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a novel folder of the character referred to, which will be inexpensive to manufacture, etc.

Further objects and advantages of the present invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art to which it pertains from the following description of the preferred embodiment of the invention described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:

Similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views of the drawings.

The present invention is applicable to such articles as stationery, magazine pages, advertising folders, greeting cards, etc., adapted for general distribution, or for distribution through the mails, etc., and the preferred embodiment of the invention is herein illustrated and described as embodied in an advertising folder.

Referring to the drawings, Figs. 1 and 2 show a folder embodying the present invention for advertising automobile tires, as it would appear to the addressee or receiver thereof upon being opened. The representations of the tires, designated in general by the reference characters 8 and 9, reproduced on the folder have been extended as the folder was opened by the resiliency in the material from which the folder was made. Fig. 5 shows the rectangular sheet of material, preferably paper or cardboard, from which the folder shown in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive was made, before the same was folded in the manner hereinafter referred to. The sheet of material is pre-, ferably first printed, etc., with the desiredadvertising matter, illustrations, etc., and thereafter scored normal to the longitudinal axis of the sheet to form a plurality of sections I0 to IE inclusive by scores I! to 22 inclusive. The section I3 is slightly wider than the section I2, and sections I4 and i5 are approximately the same width but are slightly narrower than the section I3. The sheet is scored from the front at I I, I8, and 20, and from the rear at I9, 2|, and 22, in any conventional manner.

The advertising material or illustrations printed or reproduced on the sheet, in the case of an advertising folder such as illustrated, preferably include a representation of the article being advertised, although a representation of some other article may be employed, if desired. As previously stated, the present folder is one intended for the advertisement of automobile tires, and the advertising material printed thereon includes the two representations of tires 8 and 9 previously referred to. The representations 8 and 9 are so positioned with reference to the scores, etc., that they project above and. below the scores is and 2!, respectively, which scores, it will be noted, do not extend through the representations but stop at the edge thereof, as indicated in the drawings. The score I8 also stops short of the representation 8 and does not extend therethrough, for a purpose which will later be apparent. The sheet is out along the peripheral edge of the representations 8 and 9 above the scores I9 and 2 I, as at 21 and 28, respectively.

After the sheet has been printed, scored, and cut, as indicated, it is folded along the scores I8, I9, 20, and 2| accordion-wise to produce two double folds or pleats, designated in general by the reference characters A and B in Figs. 1 and. 2, along the bottom of the backing or body section I 6. The lower section It of the sheet is then folded back along the score 22 and attached to the rear of section I I in any convenient manner, as by stapling, stitching, crimping, or the use of glue, etc. Since the representations 8 and 9 above the scores l9 and 2! have not been scored and are free of the sheet above the portion thereof which forms the crests of the folds or pleats A and B, respectively, the upper ends of the representations stand up or project from the crests of the folds in the plane of the lower or front sides thereof, that is, in the planes of the sections I3 and I5 respectively.

The sheet is scored at the places indicated only sufficiently to facilitate folding and not sumciently to break the material of the sheet to the extent that all resiliency is removed therefrom at the scores. This, together with the fact that a plurality of thicknesses of the material is confined between the sections I5 and I6, causes the double folds or pleats A and B to move forward from the section II when the flap I0 is raised, and the representations of the tires to stand in relief against the background of the folder. It will be understood that any desired advertising matter may be carried by the folder on the front of any or all of the panels [0 to l 6, inclusive, and the rear of panels H], H, and [6. It will be apparent that any number of double folds or pleats may be employed and innumerable arrangements of representations, and also that the double folds or pleats, etc. may be at the top or at either side of the folds, as desired.

In preparing the folders for distribution, upper section H], which is approximately the same size as section II, is folded forward and-secured at its free edge to the lower end of the folder in any suitable manner. If the folder is intended for distribution by mail, the sending address is preferably placed on the rear side of section III, as viewed in Fig. 5, which appears as the front side of the same section in Fig. 3.

In the application of the present invention to devices other than advertising folders, such as greeting cards, for example, the representation reproduced thereon may take any desired or appropriate form, and any arrangement thereof may be employed. As has been previously stated, even in the case of advertising folders the representation reproduced thereon need not necessarily be that of the article advertised.

From the'foregoing description of the preferred embodiment of the invention, it will be apparent that the objects of the invention have been attained and that a new and improved folder has been produced which will effect the extension of representations reproduced thereon when the same is opened. While the invention has been described with reference to a rectangular advertising folder having two double "folds or pleats with a like number of representations of tires thereon, numerous modifications of the construction shown and numerous applications of the invention, some of which have been heretofore 'referred to, will suggest themselves to those skilled in the art. This application is intended to cover all variations, adaptations, and uses of the present invention that come within the knowledge and customary practice of those skilled in theart to which'it pertains. I do not wish'to belimited to the 'partieular construction shown which, as stated before, may be varied within the scope of this invention, and I particularly point out and claim as my invention the following:

1. A device of the character referred to comprising sheet-material having a double fold or pleat in the front thereof provided with a projection extending from the crest of said fold formed by material cut from the sheet at one side of said crest, and a portion of said material at one side of said fold or pleat being folded backward and attached to therear of said material.

2. A device of the character referred to comprising sheet-material having a double fold or pleat in the front thereof provided with a projection extending from the crest of said fold formed by material cut from the sheet at one side of the crest of said fold, means for permanently retaining said double fold or pleat in folded condition, and a flap formed by a score in said material'adapted to be folded forward over said fold or pleat, said double fold or pleat being adapted to automatically move forward when said flap is opened.

3. A device of the character referred to comprising sheet-material having a double fold or pleat in the front thereof intermediate the ends of said material, said double fold or pleat being provided with a projection extending from the crest thereof formed by material cut from the sheet at one side of said crest, the material or sheet below said fold or pleat being folded backward and attached to the rear of said sheet, and a flap at the other end of said material formed by a score therein adapted to be folded forward over said pleat.

4. A device of the character referred to comprising sheet-material having a double fold or pleat in the front thereof intermediate the ends of said sheet, said double fold or pleat being provided with a projection extending from the crest thereof in the plane of one side of the fold formed by material cut from the sheet at the other side of said crest, the portion of the sheet below the said fold or pleat being folded backward and attached to the rear of said sheet, and the other end of said sheet being scored to form a fia-p adapted to be folded forward over said pleat.

5. A device of the character referred to comprising sheet-material cut and folded to provide a plurality of double folds or pleats in the front thereof having projections extending from the crests of said folds formed by material cut from the sheet atone sideof said crests, and a portion of said material at one side of said folds or pleats being folded backward and attached to the rear of said material.

6. A device of the character referred to "comprising sheet-material cut and folded to provide a plurality of double folds'or pleats in the front thereof having projections extending from the crests of said folds formed by material out from the sheet at one side of the crests of said folds, means for permanently retaining said double folds or pleats in folded condition, and a flap formed by a score in said material adapted to be folded forward over said folds or pleats, said double folds or pleats 'being adapted toautomati cally move forward when said 'flap is opened.
