N. Y. Application September 25,1935, Serial No. 42,082
"' Claims. *(01. 206-76) This invention relates to a displaybox primarily for use in the display of rings, cuff links, jewelry, and other articles. 1
Boxes of this type have heretofore been de 5 signed with a hinged cover adapted to be closed over the displayed article, ;and when open the entire box, both the body andits cover, is ornamented to appeal to the esthetic faculty by making the display attractive, pleasing and beautiful for a more handsome setting off ordisplay of the article. The boxes heretofore employed have been fabricated of various materials and provided with an ornamental cover, such as leather, which soon showed signs of wear and use. and thus impaired the beauty of the ,display.
ihe present inventionhas for itsobject to pro-- vide a display box especially adapted for jewelry and like, articles in which the usefulness of the box as an ornamental. display means is practically made permanent, andfurtherto provide a display box which is simple inconstruction and durable in its ornamentation as well; as its make-up- The foregoingand other objects, will become more apparent as the descriptionof the preferred embodiment of the invention progresses, reference being'hadtothe accompanying drawing wherein Fig. l is a perspective View of a jewelry display box constructed in accordance with the present invention; and
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detailed sectional view taken about on line 22 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the numeral I designates the body or bottom of the box and 2 the cover or top thereof, these parts being herein shown hingedly connected, as indicated generally at 3. The hinge is of the spring type wherein concealed spring means are 40 provided for holding the cover either in closed or open position, and consequently when the cover is moved to a closed position, and permitted to close freely under spring pressure, the marginal abutting portions of the body and cover are 45 brought forcibly together and there held. Within the chamber or cavity of the body is arranged the display pad 6, while the cavity or chamber of the cover 2 may be lined with a suitable covering 5 tending to increase the display value of 50 the box when opened, as well as serving to protect the displayed article when the boxis closed. The ring or other article is disposed on the pad 4.
The abutting marginal face portions 6 and 1 55 of the body and cover, respectively, are given sufiicient width to provide a framing effect or appearance about the respective cavities, and in order to'increase the. beauty of the frame, such surfaces are ornamented. This surface ornamentation is generally indicated at 8 and is pref- 5 erably given'a color in contrast to that of the marginal face portions Band 7. The surface ornamentation may be given other contrasting characteristics, if desired. The surface ornamentation is indicated as a coating or covering, 10 which may be wiped into surface depressions in such marginal faceportions, or itmay be otherwise applied thereto, and then in orderto protect such surface ornamentation against chipping or cracking, as might occur when the cover is forcibly closed upon the body, surface projections it are provided on the marginal framing face portions 6 and'i. Such upstanding projections may assume an ornamental design to enhance the esthetic value of the ornamentation, and they may also be in the nature of the heavier enclosing borders ll, extending along such marginal face portions. 'These upstanding projections are of a self-sustaining character, being formed of a substance which will receive the force of the impact when the cover is closed forcibly upon the body without 'yieldi-n'g thereunder, and thus will protect the ornamentation against contact with an abutting surface. The ornamental projections HI and H of the body may coincide with those of the cover for greater support and protection against chipping or cracking the: surface ornamentation.
In practice, the body and cover are molded with the framing surface ornamental depressions in the. abutting marginal face portions, and the latter are then wiped with a color, or otherwise treated to bring out the ornamental effect. The molding composition is preferably a resinous compound of the phenolic type, although other plastic or even metallic material may be used, the desideratum being to provide a molded or shaped framing border for the box of durable construction and one in which the framing border will take a high polish so that no fabric covering is needed and the framing ornamentation will stand up under hard usage. The framing borders may be separable from the body and cover although it is preferred to provide them unitary, and the ornamental depressions of the framing borders may be molded or stamped therein. By wiping or coating such depressed portions the surface ornamentation is brought out in vivid contrast to the body and cover, whereby a beautiful framing effect is obtained for the displayed ring or other article.
The surface ornamentation is protected against chipping or cracking by reason of the self-sustaining and non-chipping projections I0 and II which latter receive the impact or blow of the cover when closing on the body without yielding or disturbing the ornamental surface. Both the body and cover of the box may be readily molded into a finished product without the necessity of applying a finishing fabric or coating, and the ornamentation readily applied with the least expense and yet at the same time affording a beautiful framing for the display which is both durable as well as appealing and attracting.
What is claimed is:
1. A display box for jewelry and the like, comprising a body and a cover closable upon the body, the body and the cover being molded from a composition to provide opposed marginal framing face portions adapted to be brought into abutting contact with each other when the cover is closed upon the body, such framing portions each having a depressed zone thereabout provided with surface ornamentation and a raised zone defining a border along the depressed zone, the raised zone of the body coming into contact with the raised zone of the cover when the latter is closed thereupon, for protecting the surface ornamentation of the cover from that of the body when the box is closed.
2. A display box having a body with an article receiving cavity and a framing surface thereabout, a cover hinged to the body and likewise having a framing surface coinciding with that of the body and resting thereon when the box is closed, one framing surface being formed with a depressed ornamenting zone which is protected against coming into contact with the abutting framing surface by the relatively raised portions about the depressed ornamenting 'zone, such raised portions being non-yieldable and self-sustaining in character and providing a continuous and uninterrupted border along the outer margin of the framing surface.
3. A molded jewelry display box having a body and a cover, each provided with molded framing surface portions adapted to be brought into contact with each other when the cover is closed upon the body, such abutting framing portions being provided with a depressed zone having surface ornamentation, and relatively raised parts defining a substantially continuous border along at least one margin of the depressed zone, the relatively raised parts of the framing portion of the body adapted to abut like parts on the cover when the box is closed to support and protect the surface ornamentation on the body from contact with that on the cover, such relatively raised parts being self-sustaining and non-yielding in character.
4. A molded jewelry display box having a body and a cover connected thereto by a spring hinge serving to close the cover upon the body, the body and cover being each molded as unitary parts with their outer surfaces polished and provided with framing surface portions adapted to be brought into abutting contact with each other when the cover is closed upon the body, such abutting framing portions being polished and each provided with depressed surfaces arranged to form an ornamenting zone extending thereabout, and the parts of the framing surface portions of the cover and body that border upon the margins of the ornamenting zones being relatively raised and adapted for abutment to space the ornamenting zones of the cover and body when closed, such relatively raised parts being self-sustaining and non-yielding in character, and an ornamental coating on the depressed surfaces below the relatively raised parts.
5. A display box having a body with an article receiving cavity and a framing surface thereabout, a cover hinged to the body and likewise having a framing surface coinciding with that of the body and resting thereupon when the box is closed, one framing surface having a depressed zone thereabout and a relatively higher protecting zone bordering upon said depressed zone, and ornamentation upon said depressed zone protected from contact with the other framing surface by said higher zone.
