This invention relates to a new and improved card holder for railway equipment and particularly to a device for holding a defect card or other article against the side of a car or other accessible portion thereof.

It has been customary to provide railway cars with boards or other means to which the defect cards may be tacked but when the car has been on the road for some time before its return to the shop the defect card quite often is illegible, if not destroyed completely.

It is an object of this invention to provide a defect card holder that is substantially weather proof.

It is a further object of this invention to provide a defect card holder from which the card may be readily removed.

It is a still further object of this invention to provide a defect card holder and lid therefor so proportioned and arranged as to obviate the necessity of exact fitting or assembly work.

These and other objects will be apparent to one skilled in the art from a study of the following description when taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing in which Figure l is a elevational view of the device, parts being broken away to more fully disclose the interior construction.

Fig. 5 is a perspective view showing the inside of the lid.

Referring now to the drawing in detail it will be seen that as illustrated the device comprises a holder A and lid B, each of which has been shown as cast integral and with the coacting parts so arranged as to eliminate any exact fitting, drilling or machining.

The holder A comprises the back wall 4, the major portion of which is fiat while the upper portion is formed with a curl or semi-circular member 6 opening toward the rear and extending the full length of the back plate as clearly shown in Fig. 4. The front wall 8 is uniplanar and disposed at a slight angle to the back portion to which it is joined by bottom wall It and wedge-shaped side walls I2. The walls are cut away as at M to provide an opening which will leave the corners of the card carried in the holder exposed in order that the card may be more easily removed. The bottom wall is also provided with an opening [6 through which a pencil or other means may be inserted in order to lift the card if desired.

The holder is provided at each end with brackets I 8 extending outwardly from the end wall and provided with an opening 20 to receive rivets, bolts or other securing means by which the holder is attached to the car. The brackets which are offset slightly from the plane of the back, in order to space the holder from the car structure, are suitably braced by gussets 22. The upper edge of each bracket is provided with a ledge 2 the purpose of which will be described later.

The lid B is formed by a plate 26 having a downwardly extending flange 28 on the front and ends, the front flange being provided with a strengthening bead 30. The rear edge of the plate is curved downwardly and then bent sharply inward to form the uniplanar interlocking member 32 which extends between and is integral with the end flanges as clearly shown in Fig. 5. The end flanges increase in depth from front to rear and have the lower rear portion curved as at 3 5 in order that the lid may be supported on the ledge 2 previously mentioned. A centrally located upstanding lug 36 is formed on the lid to check the amount the lid may be raised.

In assembling the device, the lid is placed on the holder so that the interlocking member 32 engages within the semicircular top portion of the holder and then the entire assembly is fastened to the car structure, and when so fastened it is seen that the lid cannot be removed due to the length of portion 32 and flanges 28. When the lid is raised it is supported by the ledge 24 and curved portion 34, the latter sliding on the ledge.

It is thus seen that a holder is provided in which the lid overlaps the entire upper edge of the holder to exclude any moisture or dirt and that the two portions are formed to provide a loose hinge construction which will obviate the necessity of any fitting or machining. The parts may be cast integral, welded or pressed to form the holder described and shown or modifications thereof, which modifications will be apparent to one skilled in the art Without departing from the scope of the appended claims.

What is claimed is:

1. A card holder comprising, a casing having at least one wall provided with a curved recess extending the full width thereof, a lid having flanges adapted to have sealing relation with the casing and provided with means coexteniV8 with and adapted to engage within said recess, said recess and means being relatively so formed and arranged as to cooperate in providing a weather-sealing hinged construction for said casing.

2. A card holder comprising, a casing, attaching brackets on the casing, a curved recess formed in and extending the full width of at least one wall of said casing; a lid having flanges on at least three sides thereof adapted to overlap and have sealing relation with the casing, and means on one side of said lid coextensive with and adapted to engage within said casing recess, said recess and means being relatively so formed and arranged as to cooperate in providing a weather-sealing hinged construction for said casing. 7

A card holder comprising, a casing, attaching brackets on the casing, a curved recess on at least one wall of said casing, a ledge on said casing adjacent the recess and bracket; a lid having sealing flanges, one of said flanges terminating in a curved portion adapted to cooperate with said ledge and means on one edge of said lid to engage within said casing recess.

A card holder comprising, a casing, a recess formed in and extending the full width of at least one wall of said casing, attaching brackets on the casing, a movable lid having flanges adapted to overlap some of the casing walls, and an interlocking member on one side of the lid coextensive with said recess and so formed and arranged as to engage therewithin to provide a weather-sealing hinged construction for the easing, said flanges and member cooperating with the casing when in place to retain the lid on the casing.

A card holder comprising, a casing, a recess on one wall of said casing, attaching brackets on the casing, lid supporting means adjacent the recess; a swinging lid having sealing flanges overlapping the associated casing wall, some of said flanges increasing in depth and being provided with curved portions adapted to cooperate with the supporting means, and means on the lid adapted to engage within the recess, said flanges and last mentioned means cooperating with the casing when secured in place to retain the lid in its swinging position.

A card holder comprising, a casing having an imperforate rear wall formed with an outwardly facing recess extending the full width thereof, said recess constituting one element of a weather-sealing hinge construction, and a lid having flanges adapted to sealingly engage the casing, said lid being provided with means coextensive with and adapted to engage within said recess and constituting the other element! of said hinge construction.

A card holder comprising, a casing having a wall provided with a curved recess extending the full width thereof, a lid having flanges adapted to have sealing relation with the easing and provided with an interlocking member coextensive with and adapted to engage within said recess, said recess and member being relatively so formed and arranged as to cooperate in detachably retaining said lid on the casing.

In a card holder, a casing provided with at least one imperforate wall, a lid having flanges in sealing engagement with the casing, weather sealing hinge means for said casing including a recess formed in and extending the full width of said wall, and an interlocking member on the lid provided with a re-bent portion coextensive with and extending into the recess and cooperating therewith to retain the lid against displacement.

In a card holder comprising, a body portion having at least one imperforate Wall and a lid, means providing a weather-sealing hinged connection of said lid with the body portion including an outwardly facing recess extending the full width of the upper part of the body portion, and a hook-shaped member on said lid 00- extensive with and engaging within the recess to retain the lid against displacement.
