IMPROVEMENT IN TRACE AND PAD BUCKLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 204,940, dated June 18, 1878; application filed April 24, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Beitknown thatI, GEORGE EDWARD BALES, of Seattle, in the county of King, Washington Territory, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Trace and Pad Buckles, of which the following is a specification:
Figure l is a front view of my improved buckle, part being broken away to show the construction, and shown with its attached straps. through the line as :0, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved buckle for connecting traces, hametugs, pads, and belly-band of a harness, which shall be simple in construction and convenient in use, enabling the traces to be readily adjusted as maybe required.
Theinvention consists in an improved buckle formed by the combination with each other of the frame, having an inwardly-projecting slotted flange and a rigid tongue formed upon its forward bar, a loop formed upon its rear bar, and a rigid tongue upon its center bar, and the wedge-block grooved longitudinally to receive the tongue, and having a loop formed upon its forward end, as hereinafter fully described.
A is the main frame of the buckle, upon the inner side of the forward bar of which is formed an inwardly-projecting flange, B, which is slotted to receive the trace (l and the wedgeblock D. Upon the inner side of the said forward bar of the frame A is also formed arigid tongue, E, which enters a hole in the trace 0, and prevents it from moving out of place before it is fully clamped by the wedge D. The wedge D is grooved or slotted longitudinally upon its outer side for the passage of the tongue E. Upon the forward end of the wedgeblock D is formed a loop, F, to which is attached the rear end of thehametug Gr.
Fig. 2 is a section of the same, taken Upon the rear bar of the frame A is formed a loop, H, to receive the side straps of the harness. The frameAis made with a central bar, to which is attached a rigid tongue, I, which projects outward to pass through the strap J of the pad K, and thus secure it in place. To the lower end of the strap J is buckled the belly-band L.
By this construction the trace 0, when under tension, will be firmly clamped between the wedge-block D and the buckle-frame A, so as to be held firmly and securely in place, and so that the entire strength of the material may be utilized for sustaining the draft.
The connection between the frame A and the flange B is strengthened by the brace-bars M, extending from the forward corners of the said frame A to the corners of the said flange B, as shown in Fig. 2, and in dotted lines in Fig. 1. The braces M also prevent the rear end of the frame A from being drawn sidewise in case there should be an unequal draft upon the pad and belly-band.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent GEORGE EDWARD BALES.
