BABY BLANKET Filed March 24, 1934 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 f/V Vf/VTOH. J/Va mm ii/om s om Patented July 21, 1936 UNITED STATES PAT EN T OF F! C E BABY BLANKET Ingvard Bjornson', Los Alamitos, Galif. 7 Application March 24,. 1934, Serial No. 717,175 ioiaims. (Cl. 5-334) This inventionrelates to a blanket or covering. to be used. on cribs, beds, or the: like, and: while primarily intended for children, can also used for 'adults. I
The primeobject of my invention is to pro-- vide a blanket which can be'maintained in place and. will; prevent the occupant from inadvertently uncovering himself. The blanket allows a maximum freedom of movement,- is comfortable, and-will keep the child or adult well covered.
Another object is to" provide a blanket, a part of which may be pulled over the occupants head, leaving the head extending thru an opening, while the rest of the body, including the hands, is securely covered. I
Another object isto provide a blanketr which can. quickly and easily arranged so that in case'- of need; the; occupant may be partly covered or uncovered without disturbing or completely exposing him. Y
Another object is to provide a blanket which is securely fastened place, andyetthe sides and bottom thereof are free to be tucked around and under the mattress.
Still another object is to provide a blanket of the character stated; which is so constructed that it is looseboth lengthwise and crosswise over the occupant, thus giving freedom of movement, and at the same time, preventing the occupant" from being uncovered;
A further object of the invention is to provide a covering which may be partly or wholly opened or separated into two. parts so that the covering canbe opened or closed easily over the occupant.
" A-featureof my blanket resides in the means by which the occupant can be quickly and easily covered oruncovered, said means including detachable or releasable fasteners.
Another, feature is that the portion of the Z blanket which extends under the occupant I is maintained taut and smooth by attaching bands or strips ,at suitable places on the under portion ot the blanket, which bands are fastened to suitable places on the springs. bed or crib.
,Otherobjects, advantages and. features of invention may appear from the accompanying. drawings, the subjoined detailed description and the appended claims;
In the drawings- Figure l is a top plan view of my blanket.
Fi'gureZ is a bottom plan: view of the same.
Figure 3 is a perspective View of the same.
Figure 4 is a bottom plan view of a modified form of blanket.
Figure 5-isa perspective view of the form shown in Fig. 4..
Figure 6 is a fragmentary plan view of' a blanket with a water-proof apron attached thereto.
Figure: 7 is a. top plan view of the blanket showing another means of attaching the strips or" bands to the blanket. Figure 8 is a plan view of a. further modified form or. blanket.
Figure 9 is an end of, the type shown. in 10 Fig. 8.
Figure 10- is a. side view of the form shown in Fig.. 8.
Figure 11 is a fragmentary plan view of. still another modifiedform of blanket.
Figure 12. is afragmentary plan view of another modified form of blanket- My blanket comprises, in general, a rectangular piece of material which is folded back upon itself transversely of the material, the top portion being about four or five times as long as the under portion. The under portion is long enough to extend to approximately the small of the: occupants back, thus preventing soiling of the under portion.
A suitable opening with a slit extending therefrom is provided. at the fold so as to permit the occupantsz head? to pass therethru, when the top portion is. put in place and after the occupant has been. placed upon the lower portion.
The blanket is provided with. suitable bands or strips so positioned as to hold the cover in place when they are fastened to bars or other portions of the springs, crib or bed. The bands are easily loosened or detached, as will be subsequently described.
The lower portion of the blanket also provides a means for attaching a water-proof apron so as to prevent soiling of the: mattress or covering thereon Referring more particularly to the drawings, the blanket l is preferably rectangular in shape and. is made of any suitable or usual material. The blanket consists of an upper or covering portion 2, and. a lower portion 3. The lower portion is shorter than the upper portion and extends downwardly asufiici'ent distance so that the lower edge thereof. is positioned at approximately the small of the occupants back.
A strip or band 4 is attached to the under portion 3 and this band is long enough to extend beyond each. side ofv the blanket and is tied or otherwise secured to the crib or bed. The band 4 is attached to the lower portion. of the part 3. A second hand 5 isalso secured to the portion 3,
downwardly from the blanket. and are'suitably attached to the'crib or bed. All the-bands are attached adjacent the center of the parts 2 and 3 so that the outer edges of the blanket can; be tucked under the mattress, as shown: at and 1'. The bands 6, l are so tied that suf-' ficient looseness is provided over the, occupant.
An opening 8 is provided in the blanket adjacent the upper fold and thisrop'eningapproximately large enough that the head of the occupant can pass therethru. A slit 9 extends into the opening 8 so that'this opening can be :thereof is buttoned enlarged in order to pass over the head, An'
elastic band In is attached .to the upper part2 and extends over the slit 9, and the free end slit closed. 7
In the Figures 4 and 5, the same general ar rangement is provided as was described in Figures 1 to 3, inclusive. That is, the blanket has "an 'llpper or. covering part ll,. and a lower or folded part I2. I
A pair of eyes I 3, l3aresecured to the'underpart of the cover II. A pair of eyes I 4, I14 are secured to the folded part l2 adjacent the lower edge thereof, The :eyes l3, l4 areatta'ched together by hooksl5,.on the bands l6,"an.d the eyes l3 are so positioned outwardly and down--- wardly with respect to [4, l4'that' afullness is provided in' the: upper covering A longitudinally and transversely, as shown at H.
The fastening. ,bandshold thelower fold l2 I4 is less thanithespace transversely between the eyes I 3; therefore, when the eyes l3, [4 are will result.
A band 20 is also securedtothe lower portion l2 and at the top thereof,.so that'portion' scribed. A water-proof apron 23' may beattached to the underfolded portion 22 lin the following manner: apair of eyes 24 are secured to the part 22; the apron 23 has a pair of spaced slots 25 formed-therein whichfit .over the; eyes 24,,or in Figures 1 to 3,:thebands'4 extend thru:
the slots. The 'usualrattaching band is then hooked into the eyes 24, and the-apron and under portion, 22 ,are'thus held securely in position; a
A pair of bands 26-which"may.1be elastic-are attached to the, apron 23eby means of a snap fastener 21', or the:like.;j The aprori'is also providedwith a central tongue: 28 whichfits under.
the folded por'tionZZIl;
so astoireleasably hold the V blanket 33 is a separate piece from the under part 34, and is wider than the under part. The, two pieces are stitched together at the fold, 35. Prior to stitching the parts 33, 34, together, the
, upperpartis pleated, asshown at 36. This 10 provides a fullness over the occupant so that the blanket is more comfortable. Attaching ,bands 31 are permanently or detachably secured to the part 33, as previously described.
I In" order toprovide a longitudinal and transl5 a verse fullness in the blanket, and particularly on the upper part, I may provide apair of eyes '33 which a're attached" to the upper face of the a under fold 34. A hook 34 is, secured to the under face of the upper fold 33 and this hook is 20 positioned belowland towards the-edge relative to theseyes' 33. Thus, when, the'hook 34 is enthe-blanket, in the-same mannerasthe eyes I3, 25 is M, previously described.
In Figure ,11, a separable fastener-38 is'provided at the fold, of the blanket, "either at one side oratjboth sides of the headopening 39.7 It
is obvious thatthe separable fastener 38 may L be provided either at the 016; or adjacent thereto; The; fastener, of course, extends transverse-f lylacross the blanket. With thm latter arrangement, the'upper or-covering part of the blanket need not be thrown over the head of the. occu-' pant. {That is, the fastener can be released and and the occupantplacedon the blanket and the? covering part then thrown back over him, and' 1 V I the separable fastener again closed. In Figure 12, I have shown a mcdifiedform of blanketin which a space'is providedfor the free movement of the arms, both to the side and above the head. The blanket 40 is provided witha 7' fastened together, a fullness in the upper fold l I head opening4l,'as previously described. This head vopeningis below the folded edge of the blanket.- Ateither side of this head opening,
andextending above saidopening, I'thus provide an extension .42; This extension enables :the 1 child to move its arms freely towards theside V and also abovethe head. The upper and lower portion of theblanket are secured by means of bands in the same manner; as previously de isheld taut and smooth on the bed. The blanket isprovided witha head opening 20i,.identic'alin' construction and arrangement, as previously described. Stitching 44 extends outwardly from the-head opening 4'|,' to act as a stop shoulder and thus prevent the child from kicking itself upwardly in thelblanket. The stitching 44 also provides a space between said stitching and the folded'edge of the blanket so that a pillow can be inserted from the side, then-pillow being effectively held in position. 7
Having described myinvention I claimz,
1; A blanket comprising a strip ofmaterial, said strip including an upper long portion and a lower short portion, saidjupper portion having ahead opening therein, fastening bands detach-Q ably attached to the upper and lower portion, said'fastening'bands being adapted, to be attached to a bed whereby the blanket is held 7 against movement and the lower portion is held taut, andinterconnected fastening means on the upper andtlower portionsadjacent the side 1 I g s edges thereof whereby afullness is provided in In Figure 7, theupperi'par'tzof therblanket 29 is held. imposition over; other occupant;:by cmeans the upper portion, said fullness extending longitudinally and'transversely of said upper;por- 5 tion, said fastening means on the upper and lower portions being unequally spaced from the side edges of the blanket and from the upper end thereof.
2. A blanket comprising a strip of material, said strip being formed with an upper and a lower portion, and having a head opening therein, a pair of fasteners attached to the lower portion, a pair of complementary fasteners attached to the upper portion adjacent the side edges thereof, said fasteners being joinable whereby a longitudinal and transverse fullness is provided in the upper portion only, and means secured to the lower portion, said means being adapted to be attached to a bed whereby the lower portion is held taut.
