WATER TUBE BOILER HAVING STEAM SUPERHEATER INTERCHANGEABLE TO FEED PREHEATER Filed June 27, 1955 M/VO/f/CH/ MEDA fl tt'orneya.
Patented June 30, 1936 PATENT oFFicE WATER. TUBE BO ILER HAVING STEAM SUPERHEATER INTERCHANGEABLE TO FEED PREHEATER Miyokichi Ikeda, Okubo, Yodobashiku, Tokyo, Japan Application June 27, 1933, Serial No. 677,822 In Japan October 1, 1932 3 Claims.
My invention relates to improvements in water tube boilers, more particularly to an improved combination of a steam superheater interchangeable to a feed preheater witha specially arranged multiple drum water tube boiler, and has for its object the provision of a very simple and efiective arrangement of water tube boilers which will generate the superheated steam and which can also be easily converted into an ordinary water tube boiler generating a' greater amount of high pressure steam for special purposes.
Water tube boilers having multiple drums such as three or four drums arranged in triangular or quadrilateral relation and connected together by means of water tubes amount to much less in total height if compared with the other type of multi-drum boilers, and there is a large vacant space left on the top. Accordingly if such space is taken advantage of by installing a steam superheater the space for a complete boiler unit can be greatly economized. In accordance with this invention the above described vacant top space of a water tube boiler having three or four main drums arranged in triangular or quadrilateral relation is utilized to receive a special steam superheater interchangeable to a feed Water preheater directly associated with the main boiler.
For the consideration of what I believe to be novel and my invention, attention is directed to the following specification and the claims appended thereto. In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a diagrammatic sectional elevation illustrating the arrangement of a water tube I boiler embodying this invention. Figure 2 is a.
view in similar position of a modification.
Referring more in detail to the drawing, A represents a main water tube boiler assembly or unit having drums I, 2, 2' and 3 connected together with water tubes 4, 5, 6 and I respectively. The drums 2 and 2' may sometimes be combined into a single drum 2" as shown in Figure 2. However, an auxiliary steam drum I is connected to the main steam drum, but it may be omitted if desired. On the other hand, B represents the steam superheater unit embodying this invention, which may be converted into a feed water preheater. The combined superheater and feed water preheater comprises a front drum 8 located above and parallel to the top drum or main steam drum I of the water tube boiler A and a rear drum 9 placed above the auxiliary steam drum I, if the latter is provided. The drum 9 is divided into two compartments by means of a longitudinal partition wall I and each resulting compartment is connected to the front drum 8 by means of water tubes I I and I 2 which are preferably curved outwardly. The lower compartment of the drum 9 is connected to the steam drum I or to the steam drum I if there is no auxiliary drum I' through a pipe I3 and a stop valve I4 and also connected to the feed Water pipe I5 through a stop valve 14, while the upper compartment of the drum 9 communicates with the superheated steam supply pipe I! through a stop valve I6 and also connected to a suitable drum such, for in- 0 stance, as 2 of the main boiler A through a check valve I8 and a feed water pipe I9. The superheater unit B is associated with the main boiler A on top of the latter to cooperate with it, while a suitable combustion grate such as an auto- 15 matic stoker; V 2| represents the combustion chamber; 22, 23 and 24 designate baflle walls, and 25 represents'the outlet for the combustion gases.
The passage of flame in the combustion cham- :9 ber of the present boiler is as shown bythe arrows and the tube nests II and I2 of the superheater B are heated by the gases of the combustion which have passed through the main boiler. When the element B is used as a steam superheater the valves I4 and I8 should be closed and the valves I4 and I6 are opened to supply the steam in the steam drum I into the lower compartment of the drum 9. Then the steam passes through the tube nest H into the opposite drum 3O 8 and through the tube nest I2 enters into the upper compartment of the drum 9, and the superheated steam is delivered through the valve IE to the supply pipe II. If the element B is to be used as a feed water preheater, the valves I4 so and I6 should be closed and the valves I I and I8 are opened so that the feed water is supplied to the lower compartment of the drum 9 from the feed Water pipe I5 so that it passes through the tube nest I I into the drum 8 and is delivered 20 into the upper compartment of the drum 9 through the tube nest I2. Thus the preheated water is supplied to the drum 2 through the valve I8 and the pipe I 9, and ordinary high pressure steam may be sent out of the drum I through an outlet H for this purpose. In this manner, the unit B may conveniently be converted into a feed preheater from a steam superheater and it will be seen that the unit B can be easily installed upon the main boiler A and it has a simple construction which facilitates cleaning and repair without disturbing the main boiler.
