The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in clamps for use particularly in connection with concrete forms and has for one of its important objects to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of this character embodying a construction which is such that it may be expeditiously applied and removed.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a clamp of the aforementioned character which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, highly eflicient and reliable in use, compact, light in weight and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing'and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:--
Figure 1 is a view in vertical section through a clamp constructed in accordance with the present invention, showing the same being used in a bridge construction.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional View, taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view, taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a detail view in perspective of the blank from which the frame constituting a part of the present invention is formed.
Figure 5 is a detail view in perspective of the threaded wire tightening rod constituting a part of the invention, showing a tie wire connected therewith.
Figure 6 is a detail view in perspective of the metallic frame.
Figure 7 is a vertical sectional view through the invention.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises a substantially U-shaped frame I which terminates, at its ends, in out-turned feet 2. The frame I is formed for a single length of suitable metal, as shown to advantage in Figure 6-of the drawings. Of course, the frame I may be of any desired dimensions.
The frame I has formed in its bight portion an unthreaded opening 3. The smooth or unthreaded opening 3 is for the reception of a threaded tightening rod 4 which, as illustrated to 'rod 4.

The rod 4 includes an unthreaded inner end portion 5 having an opening 6 extending transversely therethrough for the insertion of a tie wire I. A 5 nut 8 is threaded on the rod 4 and engageable with the bight portion of the frame I for tightening or loosening the tie wire.
When using the device in the construction of a bridge flooring, as shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3 of 10 the drawings, the nut 8 is removed and the tie wire 'I is inserted through the opening 6 of the The two legs of the tie wire are then passed on opposite sides of the timber 9 on one side of the I-beam I0, inserted between the meet- 15 ing edges of the adjacent planks II and the I- beam I0, then passed downwardly under the timber I2 on the opposite side of said I-beam, and the ends of the tie wire are then twisted together, as at I3. The frame I is then slipped onto 20 the rod 4 and the feet 2 of said frame are engaged beneath the timber 9. The nut 8 is then threaded on the rod 4 and in this manner the tie wire may be conveniently tightened as desired. Of course, a suitable tool, such as a wrench, may 25 be used for tightening or loosening the nut 8.
It is believed that the many advantages of a clamp constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood, particularly by those skilled in the art to which the invention 30 pertains, and although a preferred embodiment of the invention is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to which will 35 fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
In combination with an I-beam, a clamping device for securing the free ends of timbers to the under side of the upper member of the I-beam 4 comprising a wire straddling the under side of the timbers and encircling the upper side of the I-beam and a U-shaped frame having the free ends thereof abutting the under side of one of the timbers, said frame having an unthreaded 4 opening in its bight portion, a threaded rod operable freely in said opening, said rod having a nut threadedly mounted thereon, the inner free end of said rod being secured to the wire for tightening said Wire. 59
